Here is an idea, for the next version, make the gears beveled so they "stick" under the train due to being wider on the bottom. That way you don't need screws.

How would they stay in place and apart? Wouldn't the imperfections cause the small gears to eventually migrate and cluster?

@@Rakstawr you could build something of an overhang on your end rings but they may cover the outer gear teeth and not look quite as cool. It would be a bevel opposite the bevel on the gears and built into the your two outer rings.

@@Rakstawr No, if they'd sit on tiny protrusion from the base. Like a threaded, ir just simply glued pin from the inside of the ring. That would look clean. Although it is matter of artistic taste. Since this is industrialish kind of jewellery, screws are perfectly acceptable. I just concur with guys requesting gems glued on top of those screws.

@@masakahountou3160 Iirc, shaky hands is usually not a caffiene thing. It's called an essential tremor, and it actually is rather common. A lot of the most precise craftspeople i know of have it, and it's baffling how they can work so cleanly while shaking like a leaf in the wind.(edit: said leak instead of leaf, fixed it)

consider this for tiny gears: use your fiber laser, turn on wobble, and that will allow cutting metal much easier. also, if you have a smaller focal length on the lens, the better. I've cut brass gears that mounted on a pencil lead (0.5mm lead) the whole gear was maybe 3mm wide. but the laser can do smaller. ;-)

Great idea. I also cut small gears and crown gears using a fiber laser. As a matter of fact, my ring has 16 gears and spins! I sent a 3D model to the Kinekt ring maker/owner, and though he liked what I did, he really didn't like that I "stole" his idea. Mine has 14 pinions and 2 crown gears vs Kinekt 6 pinions and 2 crown gears....go figure. Prototype is sterling...final will be in Argentium silver.

I used to be fascinated by small moving/spinning rings, had a collection of a dozen or so of them... but I didn't think much of it other than "these are real cool". It really gives me a new level of appreciation for it seeing how fine the precision has to be to get everything to move so fluidly. Amazing job!

This is very impressive machining and the piece came out incredibly well! I might've tried to use screws with flatter heads and tried to make them flush with the gears, but then again, I wouldn't have been able to finish step one of this process properly, let alone the whole thing lol. Excellent work. It's a beautiful end product.

When I've got small parts that need polished, I super glue them to a piece of scrap metal and use a low speed dremel to polish them. Works pretty well even for ultra tiny parts as long as you go slow enough not to knock them off. Next time you have to polish something tiny, may I suggest you try that? Great work though! People want to pay a lot of money for expensive rocks on malleable gold or silver, but I think something like this is worth far more.

I made my own wedding ring on the Sherline lathe too, the night before my wedding as I am a procastinator. I miked my finger as I wanted a snug fit. Bored the ring out and tryed it on not deburring it enough. It locked onto my finger, which became swallen imediatelly. I started to pull it but the somewhat still sharp edge started digging into my skin. I ended up cutting it in half with a pair of snips and started doing it all over again, but larger this time. Thank God I only had brass in my shop. Imagine had I turned it out of titanium...
