My sister married a Canadian and lives right over the border in Canada. We missed her during Covid. The American siblings met her and her family at 0 Ave, and did a cross border hug and picnic. If you looked up and down 0 Ave, we were FAR from the only folk doing this. It was really heartwarming to see what people will do to stay connected.

The U.S. also has posted signs along the US-Canadian border. In Point Roberts there is a concrete barrier in Monument Park that has a sign posted saying that it is unlawful to cross into the United States there.

Before the mid 2000s, you could cross into Canada and back with no problem. You showed your ID, they asked you some questions, and you went on your way. I lived near the USA/Canadian border, we visited Canada all the time. I don't know what happened (9/11?) or why it happened. I miss the simplicity of crossing.

Same thing with Mexico. I think it was 9/11 that changed all that. You can still go to Canada without a passport if your state offers Enhanced IDs (e.g. Washington, Michigan, etc)

@@necksquad3222 All states now offer enchanced IDs (Real IDs). The dates keep getting pushed back but in the next couple of years (I believe its 2024, was 2023 and they recently pushed it back) you will have to have a Real ID to fly, even domestically in the US.

@@aaronz9410 Enhanced ID and Real ID are two different things. An Enhanced ID (e.g. an EDL from Washington or Michigan) has an RFID chip with your citizenship info that CBP can read. An Enhanced ID can get you into Canada, a Real ID cannot.

I'm probably in the vast minority when I say this but really Americans and Canadians should be able to cross the border freely without having to check in with the border guards and show passports. I believe it's silly but I suppose every American fugitive and terrorist would probably end up in Canada and hide in the mountains or whatnot and use it as a base of operations?

I remember running back and forth through the peace arch as a kid while my dad and grandparents were in the car waiting for the line to move. Did this a number of times going both ways. I drive a garbage truck in the Langley, Surrey area and my route includes Zero Avenue and have seen many interactions between the citizens of Canada and the United States. This might not be obvious to some people, but do you see the two women at 7:38 in the background? The far woman is American and the closer one is Canadian. They are visiting each other with one being on the American side of the border and the other on the Canadian side. It is illegal to cross this invisible line so they converse with each other straddling the border only a few feet apart.

In Point Roberts there are probably cameras and nosy Canadian neighbors. I once tried to visit Monument Park from the Canadian side and didn't realize that all of it is only accessible from the American side, even though part of it is in Canada. A Canadian lady was eyeing us suspiciously from her house and tried to flag us down to talk to us but we ended up just driving off.

I heard somewhere though that there was a ferry that ran from Point Roberts to the mainland US. That said, it would have been reasonable in my opinion to allow Point Roberts to quarantine with Canada during that time. I think that idea was floated but turned down by both governments.

There used to be a ferry going from a place called anacortes in WA to Point Roberts; Many businesses in Point Roberts complained during covid because the border was closed and they mainly rellied on Canadian customers. You are right, Point Roberts should have been considered part of Canada for quarantine purposes.

I'm looking at this as a European who lives in Eastern Belgium, but only a 20-minute drive to the borders with both Germany and Luxembourg. I frequently cross either border, for leisure or for shopping (at least once a week), no border or customs checks, same consumer regulations and same currency on all sides. During the peak of COVID the hard borders were re-established for a couple of months, the first (and hopefully last) time since 1992 when border and customs checks were abolished within the EU; it felt really bad not being allowed to change country freely.
@kenlompart9905
@kenlompart9905 Жыл бұрын
It used to be easier to cross before 9/11. In the 80s and 90s we used to cross the border quite often to go to Buffalo just to go to the bars, beer was cheaper and they took Canadian money at par plus it was a change in scenery. I've been to almost every state on the east coast more than once and before 9/11 all you needed was a birth certificate or even a drivers license as proof you were Canadian but not once was I ever asked to show it. Before 9/11 they would just ask your citizenship, why you were entering the US, and how long you will be staying but after 9/11 that idiot Bush lied and said the terrorists entered through Canada which was easily proven not to be the case and thanks to him we now need a passport to cross the border and they're a lot stricter about it.

He got one thing wrong: The US and British were fully aware of the existence of Point Roberts on the Tsawwassen Peninsula, which would be transected by the agreed 49th Parallel border. They could have made some accommodation to avoid creating a pene-exclave but did not. The US saw strategic value in keeping Point Roberts.

Yes. The British wanted to keep Vancouver Island at all costs and the US held fast to this spot of land because of strategic value. It was not a mistake.
@e-curb
@e-curb 3 жыл бұрын
You're wrong. Neither Canada nor the US knew about the peninsula when they drew up the map. During negotiations, it was agreed to put the border on the 49th parallel, but Canada didn't want to give up the southern part of Vancouver Island, so the provincial capital was quickly moved from New Westminster to Victoria to add strength to the claim of the whole island. It was then agreed that the border would extend along the 49th to the middle of the Georgia Strait, then loop around the island. Fun fact: 49° 0' 0" latitude is actually about 200m south of the existing border in Pt Roberts.
