just for you americans....."SO HERE IT IS, MERRY CHRISTMAS"..by slade... is the second most played and listened to song, in british history..only the national anthem "god save the queen" has been played more....in britain...this song, is still the most loved christmas song of all time, (some 45 years after its premiere)...the band SLADE..were, what we used to call "glam rock bands" back in the early seventies, hence, the dodgy hair and clothes...lol.....this song, is so ingrained into the british national consciousness,...we are amazed here in the uk...that you americans, have never heard of it....in britain....this is the first, and last song, played at every christmas party, across the entire country.... its the very essence of what britain enjoys over the Christmas season.....ps...the royalties, slade must have earned over the years, with this song, must be staggering!!

It's possible this gets played on UK radio (and in stores) about once every ten minutes during the holiday season; almost as if Christmas hasn't begun until it's played. How much this one tune (the third of 3 No.1 singles Slade had in the year of its release - all of which went straight in at the top - and the first of which was sitting there the night I was born) has netted songwriter and head-screamer Neville 'Noddy' Holder is unknown, but it can't be a small amount.

Slade were one of the greatest live bands ever. At a huge festival. Isle of Wight?… perhaps not. They replaced the headliner act. The crowd bood and began to disperse. They were back a couple of minutes later! I was working in Wolverhampton in the early 70s when a pub band ‘Ambrose Slade’, before they shortened their name. Noddy Holder, the singer shouted. ‘We’re going to play a number for you, now. It’s called ‘Open the Door on me Richard, Don’t Close the Door on me Dick’

48 years after it's first release, it's currently back in the UK Top 30. I read somewhere recently, that every February, the two writers, singer/guitarist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea, receive a royalty cheque for nearly a quarter of a million pounds for the amount of times this is played in public in the build up to Christmas. You really need to check out more Slade. They were one of the biggest bands of the early 70's. Only The US didn't seem to 'get' them. They were massive everywhere else in the World. They had 3 singles that entered the charts at number 1. Not even The Beatles managed that. And Slade were one of the greatest live bands ever.

Fun fact: Noddy Holder, the singer, originally comes from the same part of England as Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin and, before Robert Plant was famous, Noddy used to drive him to and from gigs in his father's van. Noddy's father was a window cleaner so the van was full of clanking buckets. That was before Noddy was famous too. Robert really rates Noddy's voice and has tried (unsuccessfully) to persuade him to return to a singing career.

Love, love, love this one. I was 14 when it came out so it's been part of every Xmas since then. It's massive in the UK and like the Pogues and Kirsty it heralds the Xmas season here. I love the energy of it. I hope you have Wizard with 'I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day' (Al Murray made a joke about it in one of his clips). Another high energy and visually sumptuous display. So glad you enjoyed it.

I think the song was recorded in New York on a hot summer's day. The shout near the end, 'it's Christmas' was shouted up a lift shaft to get the echo effect.

Yes you are right, recorded in NY in the middle of a heatwave. The tune itself was written in the late 60s and was intended to be a melodic hippyish song.

1970s 'fashion' was unique in that with hindsight it was so bad! 😆 Slade is still played every Christmas in the UK; along with Wizard 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day' and (for a total twist and guaranteed you won't hear it in any USA store!) The Pogues singing 'Fairytale of New York'.

Jill Osler. Oh I don’t know was 1970s fashion that bad. I mean the punk fashion from the 70s still very much influences fashion nowadays. Torn jeans, to give just one example.

Fond memories of the 1970's. I forgot about this song until I heard it playing on the Christmas episode of the UK version of The Office. Instantly downloaded it and now it is always layed at Christmas. The lead singer is Noddy Holder.

I've met singer Noddy Holder in Wolverhampton and guitarist Dave Hill in Ironbridge. Both were very humble in their conversations as they were once one of the biggest bands in the UK in the 1970's. Many consider Noddy to have one of the most powerful rock voices. They were the original songwriter/singers of 'Cum on feel the Noize' as well that was covered in the USA by Quiet Riot.

I just find it hard to believe that Daniel has never heard this song... It's the same in the UK from December 1st, the same 10 songs just get played to death in retail, radio, TV etc. Though Janet Devlins version of this song actually gave me goose bumps. Unbelievable cover

For you, the song won the "no bell prize". It is great to hear first time around but I've heard this every year for 48 years. It is the way Christmas is announced in the UK. Once you hear it on the radio or in the supermarket, it is time go get shopping.

Slade were a fun rock band from the UK Glam rock era in the 70s they were huge , this track is a staple in the UK Christmas charts. Slade were a very influential rock band. This was their biggest ever hit just about everyone in the UK knows the words. Noddy Holder affectionately is known as old Leather Lungs to some lol

This has been an anthem to my Christmas since 1973 and I love it because it has sooooo many memories attached to it now from a Christmas party at school when I was 10 years old when you had to take your own plate and cup in to have party food to the Christmas I had my first daughter in the 15 th Dec to this Christmas when my 15 year old grand daughter came round and sat with headphones on for most of the time 🤣😂 and all the ones in between. I just love it 🥰🇬🇧🇬🇧
