The sound of Christmas in the UK. As someone once said: "It isn't Christmas until Noddy Holder says it is,"

1973, and it's been a Christmas classic in Britain ever since. One line is Does your Granny always tell ya the old songs are the best, then she's up and rock and rollin' with the rest. So true, even then.

This is such a part of the British Christmas. Slade were a brilliant singles band and in the UK, this is their best known one. It has become as much a part of British Xmas as Santa and getting rat arsed.

Slade was one of the really hard working class bands...toured their socks off, before becoming famous in the UK. One of the great Live bands. Deserved all their success.

'73 was a great year for Christmas songs. Even Eltons "Step into Christmas" got buried. I have a vision of him and Bernie sat around in the pub thinking they had a sure fire number 1 and then Slade and Wizzard showed up.

I reckon the top 3 Christmas Classics in the UK are this one, the Wizzard (I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day) and the Pogues (Fairy Tale of New York).

50 years old, and still my favourite Christmas song . I was 12 when it came out, that year UK charts where full of Christmas songs - most of which are the best loved today :) Merry Christmas every body xx

I believe there was a competition between Wizzard and Slade with their respective Christmas songs back in '73. One of them got on the top of the Christmas season. I think it was Slade. Great song.

@tecdessus I don't get how TOTP could miss such a crucial moment during the end credits. I know there's an angle where the pie in face is caught, but why do we not see it during the end of the credits. Weird! Anyway, I'm going back to looking at Legs & Co. doing ''Get Down''.

So underrated…6 No.1s and loads of hits yet only remembered for this. Noddy Holder has one of the best voices in rock according to Ozzy Osbourne Noel Gallagher and Dee Snider said without Slade there’d be no Oasis or Twisted Sister #SladeAreForLifeNotJustForChristmas

This song has sold an incredible number of copies and still does every year. Noddy Holder, (Slade's Vocalist and the writer of "Merry Christmas Everybody,") once said in an interview, that his family now celebrate Christmas TWICE per year: once in December and then again in April when The Performing Rights Society send Noddy his royalties cheque for the past 12 months' sales of "Merry Christmas Everybody"!

Noddy's pension fund...every year since 1973 (I was 9) he has been collecting the cheque!❤ Must have been something in the Black Country water at the time that gave us Noddy Holder, Ozzy Osborne and Robert Plant!! ❤

Unfortuenately the Xmas songs have started playing everywhere outside and this is one of them but it is an annual thing so... If at any time you fancy a bit of earlyish Slade, try "Alive". It's a single live lp from the early 70s. It includes a couple of great covers and a lot of energy.

Summer 1979 in Reading UK - they sang this to 20,000 people on a hot sunny day and everyone was singing this song at full volume. They were great live - so many happy rock songs. Try "Come and feel the noise" because when they played, they could feel the sound in their chest ...

Noddy has referred to this song as his retirement fund for decades. Every January he gets a colossal royalty cheque. I would guess it makes him more money than the rest put together. Slade are worth exploring, one of the hardest working rock bands ever, canny, sharp lyrics, *and* Dave Hill's ridiculous haircuts!

Great reaction you two. If you're of my generation and from the UK (Scotland in my case), this is a wonderful throwback to that time. I'm also delighted you know some of the other great music Slade made which of course was all smothered by this gigantic hit for many people.

You should check out Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, which reached No1 in the U.K. charts in early December 1984, and almost became the Christmas No1, but was knocked off by Band Aid - Do they know it’s Christmas, and Last Christmas by Wham. Also check out The Housemartins - Caravan of Love from Christmas 1986

I think you've either misheard some of the lyrics or at least misinterpreted them. There's no mention in the song about 'Grandma always complaining that your house isn't clean enough". The only reference to Grandma is: "Does your granny always tell ya that the old songs are the best? Then she's up and rock 'n' rolling with the rest"

Nooooo - if your gonna do a reaction to Slade Merry Christmas everyone you really should be doing reaction to their actual 70's Top of the Pops performance of it, Slade and this song especially it is just about their mannerisms their entire 70's look as well as the song. Other reactors have done reaction from the actual performance so you shouldn't have issues there, doing it from this just lacks for me part of the essence that Slade was known for.
