I had a Japanese made 57 Reissue Stratocaster. I had every intention of buying a American made Strat, but after playing several, maybe a dozen including a older ones, the Japanese made one was the best one. It played amazing and sounded amazing. I do regret not buying a older one, but seeing how mine was stolen, it would have been gone. Great video

You mentioned guitar wraps in your dive into the fotoflame mij Tele. These wraps are usually tough self-adhesive vinyl with clear poly over that can literally have ANY laser hi-def image printed on them (wood grain, stone, art, logos/advertising) and known by several similar-sounding brand names. Think high-tech contact paper or shelf covering. They are what they are but they have their place. I've put one on a pawn-shop Squier Mustang that was in perfect shape but I hated the color. It was a great solution since I wasn't ruining a valuable instrument, rather improving the appearance of a nice playing "modder" I don't need to worry about making my money back on. If I need to, I can remove it.

I purchased one of these off of Reverb from a store in Encino I believe? It's definitely one of the better finished and no chips, cracks or gouges. The pickups surprisingly are Gotoh's and have a very unique and creamy tone. First time I've ever liked factory pickups. The actual Tele configuration like you have seems to be the rare one, the Nashvile configuration seems to be much more common somewhere like a 5:1 ratio.

Kind of holds up against my MIM plus top in blue burst, though that’s an actual maple veneer that does dance a little. Enjoyed your review of the Foto Flame Fender Tele. I have a 1994 Stratocaster 60s tribute version that I bought new, with a dark blue flame on the front and back, but not on the neck (so no Hamburglar!), and there is no FotoFlame decal. It's my favorite guitar by far. The dark color makes the flame look more subtle/realistic than the Tele you reviewed, IMHO. One thing you didn't mention was the frets, which on mine are much smaller than the current medium-jumbo trend, which I really like. And I agree that the MIJ guitars of that era were built very well. I recently took mine to the local store where I bought it for some minor work, and the guitar tech said it was one of the nicest Strats he has ever played. Keep up the great work on your channel.

I've got a '94 Fender Precision Lyte that has a red photo flame top and back. It does look very lame up close and in person, not so bad from far away. The full basswood body was a problem on some of these. It shrinks and expands a lot and it's quite common to have the thick poly finish crack and even flake off. Mine has a lot of finish cracks and 5 dime sized spots where the finish is completely missing. The cracks and missing finish were down to the wood. I considered doing a refinish on it, but instead used superglue to stabilize all the cracks and to fill the missing finish chips. I kinda liked having it's history show. That being said, I did rip the active electronics out (they were crap), replaced them with a passive from 920D Custom and some Seymore Duncan 1/4 pound pickups. Strung with flats, it's a very nice bass now.

I worked on a guitar a while back that was a Strat (well, I believe the neck was anyway). When I pulled the pick-up, I realized the body was some sort of compressed, high density fiberboard and the surface layer was something like Formica! It had been somewhere damp and the fiberboard was crumbly on the unfinished surface in the pick-up cavity. The faux wood (Formica) was a nice looking dark walnut. That was surprise! All the hardware and electrics looked legit, the weight wasn’t a red flag but man that body was not good! It was solid enough to get a decent set-up and the customer was happy. I tried to do some research to figure out exactly what it was but had no luck.

Your bends at the 12 th fret never choked out and easily rode back to a pinch harmonic. It is a $150 Epiphone with P90s. I broke my shoulder and upper arm and tore the Labrum. I have a 12 stringEpi that I have to chord up the neck with diminished root harmonics, but the P90s won’t do that without hearing the blood pumping in my wrist. I really hope that a neck change can let my hand play at that angle. Any ideas? I really miss jamming. I am tuned down to E flat open(half step down) and tried D, but it is my elbow wrist and fingers. Thanks! This guitar and George Harrison’s strat gave me hope.

I have a '94 Foto Flame Strat. I spoke to Scott Zimmerman who built some of these in Japan and he said it was NOT a photographic film. It's a process called dye sublimation. A reverse print is generated usually on paper with a special ink and its pressed against the object under pressure. It's then heated and the ink transfers to the that object. I know this because I have a small chip on my guitar and there is NO film beneath the finish. He has a Facebook page and he has a wealth of knowledge about the Foto Flame.

Chatoyance is the word you're looking for to describe the flamed maple. It's an optical reflectance effect that gives it that depth and dancing character.

I want to start playing around with a guitar but I want a good one! And I want a Stratocaster, so not to get away from this video,but you’re so knowledgeable about guitars I’d like you opinion on what I should buy! Like I said I’m a beginner but I want a nice guitar? Any chance you could steer me in the right direction, and your opinion would be greatly appreciated,thank you. O and I want a sunburst too! Thanx.

Hearing one in person, they're much better. I have a set of vintage 59 Seymours in my other Tele and while these Gotoh factory installs definitely aren't that, it gives you a creamy sound that I haven't found in any other pickups. The mids carry through like no ther pickups. Not everyone's cup of soup like you mentioned but very comfortable to play and hear.

I hate to tell you this Austin, but you are a bit of a guitar snob. Am I correct in assuming that you have heard that at least once before? Please don't be prejudiced just because the girl can't "dance", she's still gorgeous to me and I would most definitely take her out any day of the week. She's a beauty in my eyes!

I understand some of the hate on the foto flame. But the neck on my 94 foto flame tele is amazingly comfortable. I will never part with my foto flame.

I have a Michael Kelly Telecaster that looks almost identical to this one, except mine is a little darker, but even the scratch plate is the same. The flame on mine moves though, making me think that it's a real cap.

F for Fotoflame and fake flame as well. I don't have a hamburgler on any of my guitars, but there is a Ronald McDonald-like clown who plays them.

How does one adjust the truss rod when it is covered by the pick guard? Loosen strings remove pick guard, Turn the rod a 1/4 inch, replace pick guard, retune strings, check neck …. repeat??
@Trog
@Trog 2 жыл бұрын
You can get the guard off leaving string tension on. From there, you just need the right tool!

Why don't they use this "foto" tech instead of that awful "relic-ing" that they do. I mean, give me a naturally worn old guitar - OR - give me a WHOLE piece of wood, with a picture of a gauged up Fender tacked to the front. Weird. I can tell you like that neck. You are flying on that thing!!

Guys why are gloss necks considered a sign of a premium guitar? Gloss is sticky and uncomfortable. I would gladly pay a premium for a tung oil or satin neck feel. Yet somehow the gloss/sticky/slow necks always get put on high end guitars as if it is some sort of advantage. You can argue that a gloss neck "looks" better and will protect the neck better but come on none of that out ways the performance loss. Thoughts?

The stickiness of a gloss finish entirely depends on the type of finish used and what your skin oils and sweat are like, in fairness. I find gloss nitro necks uncomfortably sticky, and without a doubt they are unpleasant for me, but I tend to prefer a well-finished gloss poly neck over anything else - my hands glide over it and I have no issues.

First thing I do when I get a glossed over neck on a guitar is sand that sucker down, sometimes it only takes a little Scotch Brite on it. I don't care if it is the best R9 that the Murphy shop ever made - it's going to be made comfortable according to what I want. So be it, it's only a stinking piece of wood.

I personally don't like the way it looks, expecialy if its as you say and it looks worse in person, however it honestly looks beautiful without a pickguard, even with the routs it works and imo looks better than a standard tele
