For the sake of accuracy, I just want to note: Sandra doesn't *purposely* say she's engaged to Coma Guy to visit him. She sort of wistfully mutters 'I was going to marry him' to herself, and a nurse overhears and misunderstands her. Also this movie is great.

@@GypsyScot1 Something can totally be ‘normal’ for its genre, while also ‘absurd’ by any other metric. Like, it’s mentioned that it’d equally fit a horror plot, but it being romcom “also” makes sense, because so little else would.

No, but the plot of someone falling into a coma and another person pretending to be engaged to them IS the plot of a horror movie. It's called Secret Obsession, it stars Brenda Song, and it's not very good. Also got to love that iconic New York landmark: Chicago.

I wish to defend Lucy just a little - she didn't claim to be engaged to him *exactly*. She wasn't allowed into the hospital room, and a nurse overheard her sighing "Oh, I was gonna marry him" and decided that meant 'I'm his fiancee', not 'I think he's beautiful'. So she got swept into the lie.
@Nionivek
@Nionivek 5 ай бұрын
I will also say that she doesn't really do the gaslighting herself AND tries to come clean a few times. She allows the gaslighting to happen mind you (though that is only in the last third of the movie) but she does come clean when it came to the actual marriage. . Or rather the movie does do a good job at putting you in her shoes. Someone who is truly alone in the world with absolutely nothing being shown, against her will, everything she ever wanted (a family who loves her). As well as giving her enough situations, beyond her control, to still allow her to at least claim to be a good person. . This isn't Overboard... where he does some very questionable things that makes me want to smack the protag around.

@@ninjabluefyre3815 Oh yeah absolutely. But she let the lie sit at first because it was only affecting the hospital staff, and it let her go into the room and check on the man she'd saved and dreamed about. It was a small lie at first and then it got away from her and she couldn't find the right time to take it back. The movie's pretty clear that she did the wrong thing, but it also lets us understand why.

The irony of that is they more or less did the same concept of the initial pitch (just swap a train for a boat, a coma for amnesia, and the family to be the guy's family) a decade earlier with Overboard, which later got remade recently, inverted to be about a woman gaslighting an amnesic man: essentially doing this film's plot again, just slightly different. Rom-Coms are weird.

So, I was reading about this movie, and APPARENTLY, when the idea was first pitched, the main characters were swapped genders, so it was a man who saves a woman who the fell into a coma and the sister is the real love interest, but the changed it during script development to be the version we got because the original was “too predatory”… Like WTF?! It’s weird and predatory either way! And the vaguely sexist implications that women can’t be predators or gaslighters makes me deeply uncomfortable because that’s the kinda ass backwards thinking that female abusers use to their advantage.
