Yea! I'm in the states, so I'd have to increase the size by something like 25% and add floorboards (I don't want to think about getting salt spray and other fun stuff from the road inside the car), a roll cage, front fenders, and a more powerful motor system (eight miles to town).

Looks really good! I think acrylic would be an option also for DIY. Maybe not a dome, but simple straight bends in acrylic are really easy with a heat gun. You just set two boards on the sheet and heat the gap between them and it makes a nice sharp bend. Could make a sort of pyramid shaped box for this. In any case I think this has really come together as a great design!
@wayoutwest-workshopstuff629910 ай бұрын
You're right, Ben, that would work - but it would be bulkier and heavier too..?

You’ve done a fantastic job designing and building this little car! I can hardly wait for the plans to come out so we can see other people build their versions! I’m quite sure we’ll see a multitude of variations on the roof, to suit various people’s tastes, and attempts to make a permanent folding roof, just because it is the most accessible modification, as no major disassembly is needed to fiddle with roof designs.

Some ingenious solutions. Making patterns for canopies is easier in clear plastic sheet with clothes pegs to clip the seams for a smooth line. Most seams end up as curves to keep the material in tension and wrinkle free.

Many have suggested a windscreen wiper. I will suggest a clear view screen like you get on ships. A disk of perspex or similar spinning at a rate enough rate to chuck the rain off it by centrifugal force. Should be easy enough to build using a brushless motor but balancing maybe an issue.

We used to just use soap on our visors. Though it's usually used inside the visor, to stop it steaming up. To clear rain you usually just wipe it with a glove or tilt your head to let them be blown to teh side. I do the same in the bathroom, just a quick squirt of cleaner spray on the mirror and wipe it over. When the room steams up the mirror doesn't.

I like your pedal car a LOT. It's somehow well suited in the tradition of the Morgan Threewheelers. I have 4mm plywood here in my workshop in full size panels. Should i try a clone of your velomobile? I also prefer the "deflector" windshield with a slot to look through. The very first motor cars used the same, before windshield wipers were invented. Your roof being ventilated in the back is also a very good idea. I experienced the drawbacks of a closed back of the roof, turning it into a braking chute...not so good for efficiency.😏 Also thanks for speaking slowly and clear for my outlandish ears😅 Best regards from Germany

Have you considered using solid polycarbonate sheet? No need to shape it. You could design it in panels like you designed your car, drill holes in it, then stitch it together. I'm working on making a kayak this way.
@wayoutwest-workshopstuff629910 ай бұрын
that's an interesting idea, Peter. I wonder what would happen in a crash - would it break into sharp shards?
@peterhoulihan976610 ай бұрын
@@wayoutwest-workshopstuff6299 Nope. PC is very robust, it's used for things like riot police shields, motorcycle windshields, bus shelters etc. It's also that corrugated material plastic greenhouses are made out of. It's very tough and tends to flex rather than break. It's similar to acrylic but much stronger and less brittle. It can be heat formed but you'd need a really big oven and a vacuum table for that, making it up from panels is probably more practical.

Pretty and good tho i do wonder if it was tested in the rain, it looks to me that there'd be a mild problem when driving into corner or slowing down for any reason what so ever. it MIGHT need a wider windscreeen to avoid most of the rain. But i could just as well be completely wrong, hence the testing in the rain first question up front. My possibly unjustified worries aside i am glad the little red paddle car is practically finished and looking forth to see what name it will land on. i have seen some interesting suggestions on the community tab and under few videos.
@Karibanu10 ай бұрын
Marvellous! I like the simplicity too! I suspect someone's DIY option might just fold the frame down & you can drag the attached screen to raise or lower it. I think, as I sit in what I'm pretty sure is the well-into-double-figures storm of the year down here that's actually bending my front door, that you might want to secure the bottom of the flaps too or they'll just blow away from the gap, & it'll rain inside anyway... Did you ever explore front mudgards? I'm not sure if you've left room to just mount some ( probably front wheel ) big mudgards or if it'd need some bending. I'm very impressed with the detailing in general. Are there any rules about sail-powered cars, btw?
