THIS IS THE BEST STOVE DESIGN I HAVE SEEN. I AM DROOLING FOR ONE. DEFINITELY THANK YOU FOR SHARING IT. I love the self feeding 45 degree / horizontal hopper. It allows for much heat control, and for adjusting how long you want to cook. and also what kind of cooking you wish to use. It is also compact in size, and it looks like it would heat a small house wonderfully. I really love the total design. My hat is off to you, and your design. MUDDy Amazing build !!!

Very well thought out design and appears to be quite stout. I love the large cooking surface and the multiple ways of using the primary cooking location. I can see that this would be ideal for stir-frying in a good sized wok. This looks like something you wouldn't have any trouble selling. Four thumbs up!

Nice work! This is not a prototype anymore but fully functional and real thing. Thank you for sharing! I´ll consider something like this when renovating my next summer grill place. Personally I really like the smooth hot plate option for grill and pancake making purposes. Two of these side by side may fulfill every need you have - one with pot holes and one with just a smooth surface. -a pizza oven design might be also possible cause needed action is "fast and hot enough".

This is similar to the Lorena stove from Latin America. It's good for when you need heat in your house overnight in a cold climate, because it has a huge thermal mass. It takes a long time to get hot but when it is you can cook lots of stuff and then it gradually gives off heat for hours after you bank the fire in it. Fiji doesn't sound like the highlands of Guatemala in terms of climate so you might still want to look into other designs. Have you see the Terra Ceta stove? It uses molds also.

I like the angled feed tube. Great idea. Will keep the fuel pushed in for easy feeding, but does that effect the heat coming out the top. Seems like some heat would escape out of the feed tube instead of going out the proper way.

Thank you for your previous answer. Why did you two entries for the wood, one up and one down ?
@Approtechie10 жыл бұрын
phylgom The horizontal hopper is good for lighting the fire and inserting large pieces, also for controlling the primary air to the fire. The slanted hopper works well for automatic feeding of the fire by gravity.
@Approtechie10 жыл бұрын
pupnirn I find the horizontal feed port necessary when using it. Even with the pellet burner I use it to force the primary air under the pellet grate. There are probably ways around all of the issues but I still like it and would not want to be without it.

Really nice piece or work, Appro. Probably I shall be borrowing quite a few of your innovations for future stoves! :) Can I offer a few suggestions for tweaking up your Mark 2 version, based on my past experience: 1) Make all the fire-tubes in stainless steel. They seem to last for something like ever. Mild steel is fine for everything else, all that isn't directly exposed to very high temperature flue gases and superheated oxygen. 2) Make the insulation >>at least 3 inches thick, all around the entire hot parts of the stove, including the feed-tubes
@Approtechie10 жыл бұрын
I've been a Winiarski fan for years and have the publication you link to, read it several times. Stainless steel is not typically available or affordable in most places, but I've found the 3/16-1/4" thick steel to be very satisfactory. I believe the dimensions of the stove are within the general guidelines given. I used it today to boil about 8 qts. of soup in a large pot using direct flame and with the pot skirt, running on pellets. It did just fine, used one hopper load of pellets plus 4 tuna cans more along the way. I light it with a tuna can of pellets soaked with denatured alcohol placed in the hopper first, followed by more pellets until full, and it seems to reach a full burn pretty quickly. I'll post a video on the pellet burner soon.

Thank you for your amazingly quick response! I didn't want to bother you for much more than height, length and width of your cooking surface and the the size of your sq tubing. I assumed it is 4" but you might have used 5". Trying to get a sense of scale. Thank you in advance!
@Approtechie10 жыл бұрын
Randy Simper OK, so some dimensions: cooking surface is 13.5" x 22.5" x 2" deep; all square tubing is 4.5" on a side, 3/16"-1/4" thick; 16" from the floor to the bottom of the horizontal feed port; 20.5" from bottom of grate to cooking surface; steel smoke chimney is 3" x 6" x 24" tall; ash box is 4.5" x 4.25" x 8" tall; insulating jacket is 7.5" square and 16.5" long; inclined hopper is set at 53 deg. angle, 18" from bottom of grate to top of it; cooking surface is 34.5" from the floor. There is a metal strip welded to the inside of the vertical tube to support the grate. The grate extends up the side of the vertical tube so secondary air can feed the fire in the upper burn area. Hope this helps. The dimensions were somewhat dictated by what scrap metal I found on the day I went hunting for it, so I doubt the dimensions are optimal, but the stove works great even so.

Thanks for the great idea (in a direct, concise video) - but why two feed ports?

I wonder if you could make a similar design using ceramic material like used on modern outdoor grills. I guess that goes against the rugged objective though. It seems like those in Hati would be interested in using something like this with their coconut briquettes or other types of fuel briquettes or pellets. Nice design!
@phylgom10 жыл бұрын
Hello, very nice Rocket stove. The smoke passes across the table? Or there a square tube in the table? How do you clean the ashes? escuse me for my bad english. Thanks a lot.
@Approtechie10 жыл бұрын
phylgom Yes, the smoke and heat pass underneath the top steel plate, and there is a steel bar under where the second pot would go in order to direct the heat up close to the plate surface. No ashes accumulate inside the upper section, and the ashes from the combustion chamber fall down in to the ash pot which is easily emptied. Hope this helps.

hey how about the efficiency since the flame didnt hit the pot directly that must be the pot didn't get heat enough from the flame
@Approtechie5 жыл бұрын
The hole cover can get up to 900 deg. F and with a pot skirt it cooks very well on the metal surface. Or you can put in the insert and have the flame contact the pot directly and is very efficient when using with a pot skirt.

I realize this awesome design can cook up a meal quickly, presumably using a relatively limited supply of wood, but does it throw off a lot of heat as a radiant unit, like a wood burning stove to warm a room?

Very, very nice. Much like my design but simpler (& less $). What do you think of an under mount broiler between the legs & firebox? Would the efficiency be improved with a vermiculite chamber & a deflector to swirl the fire?
@Approtechie11 жыл бұрын
I don't think there's enough heat coming down from the grill channel to do any broiling underneath it. The combustion chamber is insulated with 1.25" of Perlite (an alternative to Vermiculite) all around it. I've contemplated using a swirl device but watching the flame in the box I've decided it's not needed since it already is naturally swirling. This may be due to the box angles and the air channel coming up past the grate that allows secondary combustion and turbulence. And thanks!
