Hey gang, in today's video we show you a couple of useful tips and tricks that could help in removing a pesky pocket door. Let us know if you have any pocket door stories in the comments! Also we show you the system we adopted when we first started spraying with our Airless. As you get more comfortable spraying paint, spraying upright is the way to go, but until then this method helps eliminate frustration. I'm in full agreement with Joshua; GENIOUS door painting method. As a DIY non-professional, I've been dreading this door painting exercise. I had 12 doors and didn't want to ruin my prep work with brush marks. So, I first found a method where the doors were set up vertically, accordion style. I painted all 12 doors and ended up with runs on both sides of all but the last 2 doors; uggghhh! Again....not a professional. I'm sure the system works for the guys who spray everyday, but for me it took screwing up 10 doors to figure out how much paint was enough. And for those wondering why I kept painting when I knew I was getting runs, well, the male ego is an amazing thing....."I'm sure the next one will be perfect". Also, for those thinking I was using cheap paint, I wasn't. Benjamin Moore Advance is definitely not cheap; which made having to sand and re-paint a second time VERY painful. At least I had a good base to paint over. :-) After sanding and prepping all doors...again, I entered the ring for round 2. One deviation from Paul's system is that I set up one rack set in the garage for painting, and one rack set outside for drying. I was worried about leaving a dusty coat of overspray on the freshly painted doors if I racked the painted doors so close to my paint area. Not sure if it would have been a problem, but I had plenty of extra 2x4 material and a second rack only took 5 minutes to build. So, I painted 2 doors, let them sit for 5 minutes to let the paint set up, flipped them on the paint rack, waited another 5 minutes, then moved them to the outside rack. I moved the first 2 doors outside immediately after painting the second side, and a couple bugs became permanently a part of our door decor; hence the choice to wait 5 minutes before moving them outside. Also, I decided to leave the extra screw in the doors being moved outside and left them flat while I set up and painted the next two doors. Plenty of room on the outside rack, so why risk runs at that point. When the next 2 doors were ready to be moved outside, I removed the extra screw from the prior two doors and let gravity turn them vertical. At the end of the day, I moved all doors back in to the garage rack set for final drying. Since this will hopefully be our "forever-home", I may never need to use this again, but I can't thank you enough for sharing this with the world!

I watched this video when you first uploaded it. Now, Jan 2023, my son and I had to quickly paint our bathroom door. It's rainy and snowy outside so we had to do it in our cramped one car garage/workshop. I remembered this video. I said "watch this, son, here's a technique I learned from StudPack!" We only had one door to do, and we were rolling, not spraying, so I ended up putting 2 screws in each end plus one in each hinge area. That let us flip and rotate easily and be able to roll both sides in just a few minutes. (And it was a hollow door.) I hope I can remember all the other tips I've learned from you guys when they are needed!

God how I miss Alkyd paint. We can't get it in California anymore. But if I really need some for a job I can go up to Reno and get it in Nevada. Not sure if you're not supposed to do that but hey sometimes you got to do what you got to do to get the right materials. And no-one can convince me that water based paint can give you the finish that an oil based paint does because it does not. Paul, I love the door painting jig, I'm gonna build one for myself now. Nice tip. Thanks for sharing it. I could have used this a couple of months ago when I replaced a door that was installed incorrectly. Had to paint it by myself - took a couple of days and a small number of expletives. I used to do projects like this with my dad. We got along almost as well as you two do. We used to measure how difficult a job was by the number of expletives needed - (that was a 10 G.D. job!). Paul, it is good to see how well you and Jordan work together. You are patient and a great mentor and he is eager and open to learning as your apprentice. Plus, you both have a great attitude and work ethic, and an extremely good eye for detail. You guys are THE ULTIMATE example of a great father/son relationship, IMHO. You are truly the best "crew" I've seen on KZbin. BTW, I saved that door so it can be installed in my stepdaughter's room at her dad's place (it's got a 32" door in a 30" jamb, so she can't close it). Great video as usual, little tip for painting baseboards (skirting boards we call them), simply apply masking tape to the floor under where the boards will be installed, install the boards on the tape, paint as normal and just cut away the tape when finished.

Always liked Impervo . Used it over last 40 years and still has the best ability to level . (only Pratt came close but BMoore much nicer price ) Even brushed it levels to a sprayed look , so spraying is a guaranteed success , unless to heavy and it runs. Nice idea on doors and great choice on alkyd as opposed to latex .

I'm surprised you can get away with such a slow drying paint outside , bugs, dust etc... I've switched over to Benjamin Moores Advanced line of paint. It's a water based paint that can be brushed or sprayed and sets up quite fast and levels nicely. Great system you have for the doors.

Advance takes like 16 hours before you can second coat. I switched to Scuff X and never looked back.

I do something similar when painting doors, but I put a little piece of metal tube over the screw so it acts like a roller bearing, so I can just roll the doors, I usually work alone so it makes it easier for me.

Something I like to do is when I open a new can of paint is take a flat head screw driver and punch a hole in 3 or 4 places around the seal edge of the can. This allows paint to drain back into the can and any residue can easily be cleaned up with a paint brush. This allows for easy sealing of the can.

I used to do that as well but I've found that using one of those ring doohickeys that allows you to pour paint out of the can works better. It snaps on to the can and doesn't allow any paint down in the grooves. When done painting, pop the ring off and put the lid on. It's like putting the lid on a brand new can

WHAT? Oh, you’re a lip painter. Try pouring about a 1 1/2” of paint into a small pail. You won’t overload your brush that way.

great tip on painting doors. I could have used this video last summer when I sprayed my new doors on painting triangles that left little divets where the door was resting on them and had to wait for one side to dry and then get help to flip the door over for the other side. I always stood the doors up accordion style and used a scrap furring strip to tie them together at the top. Doesn’t work well at all when you have doors of varying heights. Doesn’t work at all when doing one door! This technique you showed is fantastic.

Brother, you just saved me. I'm a builder and I'm building my personal house and I'm doing almost everything myself. I have 43 doors to set and then paint. I was trying to figure out a way to spray them by myself. Thanks! On the speed base we flip the base and use the miter saw to cup down to the "Cap" and then just cope the cap.

I always do cuts like the one on the door from both sides going slightly deeper than half the thickness, on each run. I have had problems with chip out when I cut through like you did. To make sure the cuts are exactly at the same spot I use a track and two pieces of T shaped wood clamped against the door and pushed flush against the track. Since the T shaped pieces extend to both sides you can just flip the door over push the track against the T's and cut the other side.

hey man, you guys make awesome content. quick tip for coping baseboard; to cope that long flat piece at the bottom of the base, (before the profile), ive always set my chop saw to 0, put the OG up against the fence, then line up my blade to be just before my finished edge, and saw off as much as I could before touching the OG. then you dont need to cope the entire way, just the bit the saw couldnt get to. again, keep making the quality vids guys, super wholesome father/son team.

I'm a DIY. I learned so much from these videos. Great job guys. One little trick for resealing a paint can when you don't use all the paint. After wiping off the side and top as much as you can, I clean the groove where the top fits in with a Q-Tip or two. It helps the seal and makes it easier to open the can next time.

You can even press the sides of the blade while it's running with a gloved hand and really guide it precisely! So fast.

I used a similar setup when spraying the 34 door panels for the house I built recently and it worked out really well, except for each door I used a pair of horses set up in each room. I had a lot of short 2x lumber that the framers were going to throw away so I saved them for this purpose. One suggestion when painting anything on the flat is to start from the near side and end at the far side, opposite of what is shown at 11:59, to avoid having those tiny paint mist droplets from landing on the area that you just painted.

Had an old pocket door in my house I wanted to replace. It had a strange nut/bolt mechanism. Luckily a quick Google search of the name on the hardware brought up an old blog post detailing exactly how to remove it. Just an FYI for anyone with a different set up. Loving the content boys!

Nice to see you use cope joints for the trim work. It buys you so much forgiveness for square or plumb deviations it is totally worth the effort. A Collins Coping Foot on a barrel grip jig saw is life changing for coping crown and base.

Get you a fine finish low pressure tip for your gun. I use 311 for trim/walls and 514 for ceiling's. You'll need a blue guard to run those tips. Less overspray and paint waste.

Great idea. Wish I had seen this before I sprayed the doors in my house. Because I work by myself, I constructed a vertical frame outside several inches larger than my doors with supports front, back and sides. After setting the door in the frame, I placed a 4 x 4 on the top of the door and secured it to the frame with clamps, This held the door tightly in place and I was able to easily paint the front then walk around and paint the back. I left several inches on both sides so I can easily spray the out edges as well. Worked well for what I needed. Just found your channel yesterday. Great stuff! Subscribed.

Paul, the orange box (& maybe the blue) sells a yellow rubber push-on spout for paint containers. It is just like the bill of a ball cap, with a narrow groove along the side that clips onto the can, but it's a lifesaver when it comes to keeping the can clean. The spouts work for gallon and quart containers, too. They're about $2, I think, so grab one and try it when you paint next time - they're one of those things that make a much bigger difference than you might expect.

When I paint doors by myself I like to use two 1x2s about 18"-20" long and screw them under the door. that way you can stand them up and move them around if needed.

Nice work✌🏻 8:26 some of the newer pocket doors are “relatively” easy these days to install. But OH YES!, on remodels with older homes and those pocket doors that are solid core; it can cause a few choice words while removing those doors😉 (not to mention 30-60 mins of your time😂). 15:42 Oh, I’m feeling the pain you’ve experienced right there. It’s heartbreaking for sure. As is, when you leave your laptop outside b/c where doing some work, plans, etc...and didn’t realize homeowners has irrigation system (sprinklers) set to turn on at 6:30 pm, and end up getting laptop wet; as well as, MYSELF! Got a nice reclaimed shower that day 😂 16:52 That’s a nice “tip/step” right there. Makes reopening a paint can that has sat for a few; that much easier👍🏻

Great video footage. One recommendation: Buy a Shark Corp 21-2225 10 Inch Prybar and Nail Puller. It has a thin blade that is case hardened and saves a lot of trim.

I used to work on some high end houses and the pocket doors required removal of the split jamb for adjustment and removal. There were either plugged recessed screws holding the head jamb if you were lucky. Usually you had to find the hidden screws.

I modified some harbor freight engine stands to paint hollow metal slabs. Works great on slabs up to 48" wide, not so much on anything larger though. Made 3 sets so we can paint 3 doors at a time and roll them out of the way to dry.

For coping inside corners, I cut the straight part on the miter saw set to 15 degree bevel, then use a wood shaping disc with a Dremel to shape the curving part.

Nice diy set up for doors. There’s a kit that lets you do about 5 doors I think, they sit flat and stack after painting. Weather looks lovely. I wish we had that sun here this week. I REALLY wanna know what a remodel like this goes for
