I'm Italian. Fun fact: people never got the toilet paper fear; instead, they started raiding for pasta. No, it's not a stereotype. They took every single box they could from the shelves, except ONE KIND: Barilla's Penne Lisce. The brand became a living joke. Italians would rather starve, rather than be forced to buy them.

I was working at a military base at the time in Australia, it was hilarious because toilet paper and liquid soap theft got really bad on base to the point that during the day the MP's were lined up at the exit gates checking 1 out of 2 cars for hidden toilet paper and soap that had been stolen. I knew guys working government jobs, jobs that are nearly impossible to lose, losing their jobs because they were caught stealing large amounts. Hysteria is the word to describe it.

My parents are GSA employees, and it’s a little hard to lose your American government job unless if you smoke weed or commit a crime. My parents invited me to their apartment every weekend, and when I came on one weekend, they had just stacks of toilet paper. I asked if they were dumb, and they said that if they weren’t gonna take it, they probably wouldn’t have any, which turned out true the next weekend when I went to get some and instead had to buy handsoap and wipes instead. The stupid and the hysterical manage to bring us down to their level every time something like this happens. I asked my parents if they had missing toilet paper at work and it turns out people were put on leave for taking roles home.

So, that whole send the excess food to Africa is a thing that the EU does and it's incredibly damaging in the long run. If the EU countries have enough bumper crops to "donate" food (economists call it dumping) to African nations, chances are that at least the northern bits of Africa had a good year too. In comes the EU food for free, undercutting African farmers and often shutting them down since many African farmers unfortunately live crop to crop. This perpetuates a cycle where in the bad years Africa can't afford to feed itself because they didn't make enough profit from the good years to plant the next batch of crops. It's short-term charity made with the best intentions (probably) but it's ultimately unhealthy.
@RanEncounter
@RanEncounter 4 жыл бұрын
Do you understand that African countries do not have the logistics and funding to supply food to places in need? How is this so hard to understand? Building infrastucture and getting Africans to the level of education to use it is a real problem you know. You take for granted things like proper roads and airports in all places. It is a logistical nighmare to get suplies to the right place most of the time.
@Traditional_American
@Traditional_American 4 жыл бұрын
That's why welfare dependence is so damaging.
@catkin1671
@catkin1671 4 жыл бұрын
Different economic principle entirely. Applying macroeconomics to microeconomics doesn't always translate. You can't compare dumping to something like a universal minimum income or benefits. You see, dumping happens in "the good years." It fulfills the need of ridding an economy of excess where benefits address a completely different problem. It's not just something that happens to poor countries either. China crashed the EU solar panel and steel industries for example by flushing it with cheap materials. The powerful countries like the EU and the US get to protect our econonmy from that with tarriffs and import regulations but Africa can't prevent food dumping without stopping genuine charitable efforts. If the EU donated that amount of food in years of famine, it wouldn't harm the African economies the same way.
@Th3Kingism
@Th3Kingism 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's a good sentiment to try to help but in actuality it basically makes Africans even more dependent on western nations for aid which is bad for every country there in the long run, it's one of those roads to hell that's paved with good intentions.

Plus, the individual farmers do NOT have the financial capacity to ship tons of food. They already are losing money, so unless they receive money to ship the food, it's ludicrous to ask them to ship goods across the world. How is most of chat this oblivious to the blindingly obvious?

25:50 Yeah the problem with making the farms over in say africa is that while it works for a while, eventually the locals kill workers and owners, take over the farm because they think it's their 'right' as natives. Then since they know nothing about running a farm or growing produce it all gets destroyed and then complain and beg to have farmers come over and run the farm again. Literally rinse and repeat, been that way for like 100+ years from the perspective of Australia (Daily aussie farmers in africa are slaughtered)

Society would be more autistic in general & you'd have to deal with more layers of bullshit. I started off thinking the TP shortage was all just the media and panic, but there were actual reasons behind it. One I hadn't thought of until someone told me was how many people were working from home. There are completely different supply chains for the toilet paper you buy in the store and the industrial stuff they sell to businesses. So people were using a lot more of the toilet paper you normally buy in a store. After a few weeks you started seeing them repackage the industrial TP and market it to retail stores, but it was a while before you could actually find Charmin because people were just using more of it because they were home more, and Charmin isn't building a new factory when the shortage was probably temporary.

People will find a way around any limitation. Lol

26:00 Topic on shipping food to Africa, the reason why we don't is that food deteriorates to fast. If you wanted to bulk ship it over, you would need a large ship which would need an extremely expensive and very large fridge to be installed just to slow down the deterioration of the food, never mind the travel time it takes to get there. And by the time it got there you would sell it to who or even if it's for charity who would manage it all? There's no infrastructure over there to manage such an operation and the excessive heat would make the food rot faster, so when the food is off the ships you have days to spread it around before it becomes inedible, if it's not rotted already. Alternative, flying it over. Same fridge problem and gets there far faster but now it's extremely expensive to do so in food tonnage/shipment. A fridge system on a plane would greatly reduce the already limited capacity even more as planes have to worry about weight more so than volume. Delving into the rest of the logistics would require a calculator and I'm to lazy to do so, glhf.
@muropappa1
@muropappa1 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think the shipping is problem at all. We are getting bananas and other shiet from there cheap. But yeah Africas infrastructure is pretty fucked so slower to move and spread stuff there. Also management is shiet and corruption is high. But even if we managed to overcome all of these there would be still major problem, money. Even if we sold that stuff non profit still the prices would be too high for African market. It would have to be charity.

@@muropappa1 There are many kinds of fruits that are naturally self regulating? don't age out quickly. But the things we produce the most in the US like meats, corn, wheat, other vegetables and fruits require care for them to make a journey like that. And they would likely be converted into a long lasting form like Jerky, flour, etc but that still requires some care as hot(pretty much everywhere along the equator) & damp(ocean travel if using ships) weather are the worst conditions for storing foods like that.

Kristian Bro, 5G literally came from China. It's their tech over here. They've literally been caught planting students here to steal info, they're taking our data from proxy companies like Epic Games, and their embassies are being closed due to evidence of more spying. It's not a conspiracy theory to say we should care about the origins of what we introduce into our infrastructure.
@greasey8695

Miki That would still be just another example of China exploiting greed to get ahead, in line with using cheap labor to gain a foothold in our economies. We'd be reliant on Chinese influence for more than just Apple products and, well, most commodities. The idea is that China is competitive, and recognize us as their most significant economic opposition, which should make it reasonable for people to view cooperation and integration as a little odd. The microwaves frying your brain thing is nothing new either, but isn't the meat of the argument against the future of 5G.
