By Adine Roode: herd.org.za/blog/a-sad-day-as...
We were thinking of ways to celebrate Phabeni’s one year in July. Little did we know that he would never reach his first birthday. For the past 7 months, it has been an up-and-down struggle with Phabeni, gaining weight, losing weight, taking bottles, leaving bottles.
For the last week, Phabeni skipped either his 8, 10, 12 or 2 o’clock bottle. Sometimes it was one bottle, sometimes it was two bottles. It was either 10 or 20% of his daily intake that he did not take.
I noticed that his energy levels were not good at all and he was listless. He had puffiness in his face. I contacted Katie Rowe from Reteti for advice, as Phabeni had been on goat milk for just more than a month, and he took to it well, but he did not gain as much weight as I thought he would have, and as he needed. At least he was taking his bottles. I thought it would take some time for him to put on weight as his digestive system needed to adapt to the new milk. I checked with the pediatrician who said it would take quite a bit of time. After about two and a half weeks he started gaining weight, but he never reached 170 kgs.
I asked Dr. Rogers to give him a vitamin booster and vitamin B12 to increase his appetite. Dr. Rogers suggested that we give it intravenously to reduce the stress of darting him, so we put Phabeni on a drip for this. Even though it was mild, he perhaps did not take the sedation too well as his front legs battled to hold his weight so I laid down and he rested on my legs, with his full weight. We gave him 3 bags of fluids plus a good dose of vitamins and minerals. We wrapped up just after 4 pm and he took his 4 pm milk bottle without any problems. At 6 pm he finished the bottle easily, as well as the 9 pm bottle.
Just before 11 pm, Ruan from Jabulani lodge knocked on my window to tell me the carers needed me as Phabeni was not doing well. The signal was not great, and they couldn’t get hold of me. I rushed up to the orphanage and saw Phabeni swinging from side to side, unstable on his feet. I sent Dr. Rogers videos of this and called him just before midnight. He answered immediately and asked if he should come out. I confirmed that I thought it was needed. It felt like ages before he arrived. Time stood still.
I suggested that we try his midnight bottle at 11:30 pm, which he didn’t take. However, he did lift his head high in the air with his trunk folded upwards, and opened his mouth as if to get milk. He would shake his head as if there was something in his throat he wanted to get rid of. I was scared he might choke on the milk and suggested to Stavros that we stop. I got Phabeni to lie down, and he fell asleep.
Minutes ticked by, and it sometimes felt as if he couldn't breathe and as though he was afraid that he couldn’t get air in. I think it might have been anxiety. I counted with him, as we did breathing exercises, breathing in and out, in, out. He got up for few more times and staggered around, chasing Lammie and Spotty, Stavros or myself. We got him to lie down with Stavros’ hand on his eyes and lying behind him, and me lying on the other side, helping him to breathe. He screamed a few times. In the end, he fell asleep.
By 5 am I told Stavros I would go and make us coffee.
Godknows came by to check on us, and when I arrived with coffee, he came out and said, “Phabeni is still sleeping.” We chatted about the plan for the day. It was during this stage that Stavros came out and told me that Phabeni was dead. Godknows and I rushed in to find Phabeni not breathing, just still and warm.
Dr. Rogers joined us at the orphanage to carry out an autopsy. It was hard on the team, but the results showed acute enteritis. While this could have been caused by something that Phabeni ate, there were multiple challenges that Phabeni had been facing for several weeks. His body was continuing to go through bouts of infection, which we would treat and clear through antibiotics. The cause of the infection was not removed and so the infection continued to return. If this was due to the broken bone in his hip, caused by the dart used to tranquilise him during his rescue, Phabeni was never strong enough for us to perform the operation to remove it.
On top of this, he cut his first tusk the week before he passed away, and his second tusk was swollen and red, ready to erupt. I know that during this stage of teething, we have battled every time with the orphan calves. Statistics show that most babies are lost during the teething period.
It will take time to heal from this. Phabeni was lucky in that he was able to find support from his own species again, and the imprint he leaves on the herd is obvious. He changed Setombe for the better, as the older female opened her heart to a calf who was not her own.
Phabeni's little heart will stay with us eternally. Thank you for loving him, learning from him, and letting his life matter.

Dearest Phabeni, 🐘 Rest now, precious son of Africa, in eternal loving peace. Your brave and feisty spirit fought so valiantly. We all loved you deeply. Despite all efforts, it was not meant to be; The winds of heaven kissed you, and set your spirit free. Embraced by the enduring love of family, you will never be alone, In the hearts of your herd, you will forever be home. ❤ I can scarcely breathe; I'm so broken over the loss of sweet Phabeni. Everyone at HERD tried so hard and did every possible thing to save Phabeni. I'm heartbroken for Setombe and the other elephants in the herd. They loved Phabeni fiercely, supported him, wanted him, taught him, soothed him. Little Phabeni was so afraid of being abandoned, but in the end he found his forever family with the Jabulani herd. He truly belonged with them, especially Setombe…she *chose* Phabeni, and he chose Setombe. Thank you so much for the strength, compassion, and tireless work of Adine and all at HERD. I can’t imagine what everyone at HERD is going through. Phabeni's short but beautiful life mattered, and was filled with love, joy, and safety until the end. Thank you for sharing Phabeni's journey with us. The world has been awakened by his story, and is made better by it.

I didn't realize how delicate baby elephants were until Fenya died. I've been holding my breath ever since Phabeni's milk intake dropped off. Sweet, brave baby... To the magnificent staff of HERD, I am truly sorry for your loss. My heart broke when I read the notice this morning. But thanks to you, Phabeni got to experience an elephant family again after losing his. In turn, look at how much joy he gave his new herd, especially Setombe. And he's sparked nuturing behaviors in young Khanyisa! I will always remember his joy in the water with his new elephant family, and his rambunctious excursions with his nursery garden mates. He changed everyone around him for the better. Bless you, Phabeni and thank you.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I an sure you folks at HERD are devastated as you all worked so hard and tried so many strategies to temp him to eat and drink and to keep Phabeni healthy and well. The saddest part of all this is that there are orphan elephants at all that have to be cared for and raised at orphanages. Poaching must be stopped or these magnificent creatures will become extinct. I just read that elephants have names for each other and are very intelligent and yet people are killing them for ivory. Humans are stupid and inhumane. Mmy thoughts are with you all and I hope Phabeni has gone on to a happier life. ❤❤❤

"He was Born a Fighter, Died a Champion". Adine, your last Video certainly shows that. Phabeni was given too many obstacles to overcome in his young life. But showing His struggle to live was the best Tribute one could pay to this overmatched little Warrior. His human Friends were with him to the last, showing him love and attention as life slowly deserted him. As can be seen in the many remaining videos of him in the bush---he so wanted to Live and be with his human and own kind, but that was not to be. He had fought one too many battles for his frail body to withstand. But he Died a Champion in the Hearts of the many that truly Cared for him.

I'd like to explain because understanding something many times eases fear. As a hospice nurse, I recognize many of the same signs we see in humans. The "anxiety" is called "terminal restlessness" which is very normal near the end. It is also normal for the person (or animal) to lose the ablity to swallow, which leads to strange noises in the mouth and throat. The urinary incontinence is also normal as the body goes thru a final fluid shift. Morphine and Lorazepam are the go-to meds for comfort. I will greatly miss this Little Warrior! 🌺🐘🩵

Thank you for explaining. I have seen many Hospice videos on YT and I saw the comparisons with Phabeni in this video. But the HERD team were acting in terms of desperately trying to keep him alive, as in the Emergency Room or ICU, rather than accepting that Phabeni was inevitably dying, and helping to give him a peaceful death, as in Hospice. So this video looks disturbing to me, for that reason, because I saw the signs, as you mentioned.

I too couldn’t believe the news, I’m heartbroken although I along with the thousands around the world did not know lil baby Phabeni in person. But the love & care, the videos allowing us all to participate from afar in his fight, his little heart was broken losing his momma, & in the end he wanted to go home to elephant heaven. But I feel he was telling you Adine & all the carers & his HERD that he was grateful for all you did, the many hours, days you bottle fed him & kept him warm, the sweet fun playtime’s & Lammie & Spotty who were his friends his keepers. We all are crying but feel good about the time he was here & he loved you all so much, dearest Adine you did everything in your power to help him, in the end God called him home - now rest in peace sweet little boy, what a joy it was the world was touched by your sweet kind soul. 😢 💔

What a mighty force Love can be… we are bonded in sorrow because we share a deep love for Phabeni and the herd.. but we must not lose hope for there are so many elephant orphans that will benefit from all that was learned from Phabeni’s short journey in life. It just was all meant to play out that way. May we be encouraged by the fact that his spirit as himself lives on and does not feel any pain anymore. May he graze peacefully until we all meet again on That Great Day … much love to all of you around the world and may a deep peace fall upon you all. Amen. ♥️

Someday I'll be able to watch this video and the little angel's last moments, but not now. I've watched this channel religiously and although I will keep doing so (love the whole herd) it won't be the same. Thank you Adine and all the other caretakers for doing all you could for Phabeni at the end and for giving him the chance to be loved, and love, his elephant and human families (oh and his two sheep sibs). I know this all part of life, but I'm still shedding tears.

I 100% agree! Adine and HERD gave Phabeni and all the orphans over the years, at the Sanctuary, a fighting chance for a new life. That is all that anyone can offer, but Adine and her carers spared no expense on so many levels to get this beautiful baby bull into a better state of health. I already cherished each moment with Phabeni and the herd as I did with little miss K......he was so adorable and full of life and curiosity and it is crushing that this has happened. In time, I will rewatch the videos of him on his walks with the herd and with his big sister Khanisia. Have been in a sombre mood all day since I heard and bursting into tears when I remember what has happened.

Oh no... Oh no, not Phabeni, my little sweetpea. Oh, I'm just heartbroken. I started following HERD because I saw Phabeni's rescue from the very beginning, and my heart swellled with love for the young bull who had such a rough start in life and was so shy in the beginning. To see him flourish little by little with the help of Adine and the guidance and love of all the other caretakers and his adoptive elephant family was a lovely sight. He was a fighter, though. He had courage and a fighting spirit, and did his best to grow. Now his story will carry on to help the future orphans who will come after him. But I will perhaps forever be sad that we won't get to see him grow to a big bull. I'll love him forever! Thank you for the beautiful, priceless work, everybody at HERD! I'm so, so sorry for the loss. Let's all stand strong for lovely Phabeni and live on for his sake.
