It's very emotional to see the elephants trumpeting and vocalizing like that - they know of his loss, I am sure. After elephant whisperer Lawrence Anthony past away, the herd he had rescued came to the lodge - and still do so every year on the anniversary of his death. I am really sad for Setombe who has lost a baby, but for all the eles who have lost the chance of seeing a new bull grow up in the herd. En Khanyisa het haar klein boetie verloor - what a chance she would have had to play with a younger brother just like Timisa did with her. Oh Phabeni-Peni, we will miss you. Thank you HERD for the information regarding baby elephants and teething - the Sheldrick Trust are really experienced and if they have difficulty, it just shows the challenges that goes into raising these youngsters. Thank you HERD and Dr Rogers for doing your utmost with your care, devotion and perseverance. Thank you also for showing the Herd out in the bush at the end. It was so sad to see Phabeni walking among his family where he will walk no more. But it was very therapeutic and so tranquil to see the elephants go about their day in the beautiful African bush - life goes on ❤❤💔💔🐘🐘🐘🐘

Since I saw the video of Phabeny - Beni passing I feel a deep sadness. I see him running with a blanket on in the company of Spotty, Lammie, a big puppy a carer and Adine commenting, laughing in the back because Phabeny-Beni let out a toot, then two, three more toots. So precious with his Blake being blown and his ears doing the butterfly. I saved it, so I'll look up the carers name all of whom I sincerely love . I can't believe that he is gone.😢 Big hug to all❤

I expected the herd to be mourning the loss of Phabeni. I also agree with Adine''s decision not to let the herd pay their respects for concern that they misunderstand the situation. It is such a delicate walk when caring for wildlife. Especially, elephants who are extremely intelligent and family oriented. Caring for orphans is perilous and frought with perils. I will be honest, I cried with them as the y expressed their grief. Especially Setombe who had taken him under her wing. Phabeni knew love from his herd and from everyone in the HERD team. He was very fortunate to have been found when he did. Love to the herd and to the HERD team as you all grieve the loss of Phabeni.

Your team at Herd are simply amazing. ♥Thank you for enriching our lives with your care, dedication and love for theses animals. I feel like I am becoming a better person by watching these animals. Thank you for the sleepless nights, trials of milk formula, the blankets, giving him sheep company, cleaning his shelter, cuddling with him at night. I noticed immediately the huge difference between how well Khanyisia adjusted despite the horrible wounds she had suffered and how Phabeni struggled between his good and bad days. It was like watching a child. You could tell sometimes he really wanted his bottle but then ran away from it. Just like a child trying to eat and crying while trying to chew because teething really is a big thing. I can't imagine how hard it has been for you all after so much effort. I inherited my mother's love of elephants, it was her favorite animal. She had a huge collection of elephant figures: wooden, glass, plastic, crystal, clay… Just every size, shape, and form you could imagine. I have thought so many times that if she were still alive and I still lived in United States, I would have liked to visit her every day to watch this channel with her. I imagined her giggling at the delightful, amazing things these animals do. What I didn't expect was to become so emotionally invested with each and everyone of the elephants on this channel. Every morning I wake up, make my coffee and check out the new videos here. Often I take the computer to show my husband something. I tell him "Well, Mambo ran off and was a bad boy today" or "Lundi chased the buffalo away" "All the females have taken in little Phabeni!" So we are mourning with you. Thanks for your bravery, picking up and getting back to the herd with those heavy hearts. ❤

All I could respond the other day was "I am so sorry". The grief was so much. I can't imagine what the herd the carers and everyone so closely involved are going through right now. The fact that I am miles away and never met any of you but feel this grief is a testament to you all. How much you give, your care. With your helpful informative videos you allowed beautiful Baby Beni be loved by the world and we unfortunately now see how hard it is. Your videos will continue to help the future generations understand the importance of empathy for others and to respect the natural world around us. This is my love to you. I am so sad I have cried so much. Thank you I am truly sorry for your loss. Thankyou for making it our loss.

I wondered all night after watching the devastating passing of little Phabeni whether it would have been a good idea for the herd to see, touch and smell their tiny boy. You addressed that thought, and I thank all the carers for their knowledge in this distressing time. Love to all. Cheers Rosemary Western Australia 73yrs
@patriciamaclennan56344 ай бұрын
Rosemary I too thought that, so am glad Adine explained the reasoning behind not showing him. I have wondered maybe if Setombe was allowed into the orphanage when he was distressed, if he would have found comfort in that. But maybe that too might have created more stress. Enteritis is very painful so no wonder the little one let out screams, thrashing and making distressing breathing noises. All we can do now is send love and healing to his ellie family, Adine and all the carers. Blessings from Queensland 🐘🐘✨💟

It would appear as though HERD has many Australian supporters. I'm in country NSW and I often don't sleep well throughout the night and so I watched the final video of Phabeni while the night was still dark and I knew that I wouldn't sleep again. I'm glad that Adine explained why Phabeni's little body wasn't displayed to the other elephants but as a retired RN who spent many years assisting in the dying process as a Palliative Care and Aged Care nurse, watching Phabeni in evident pain and distress during his active dying process was very difficult to see! I kept waiting for Dr Rodgers to appear with an IV cocktail of something (I'm not even going to suggest something as I am no elephant expert), but watching him struggle both with his breathing and neurological state, being very agitated, was so bad but regardless of this I knew that Adine and the other carers like Stavros were doing their absolute best to keep him comfortable. Knowing that Phabeni passed away at the time of what would be a gorgeous sunrise on the African continent made me remember previous sunrises with human patients and that all men, women, and animals must die. It's the one inevitably of life that it will end, although some get more time than others! I shall always cherish the memory of this little bull who, like many, left us way too soon! Thanks for reading.

This is terribly difficult to see the herd so distressed by Phabeni’s absence. He was such a special little chap with a huge feisty personality and was loved deeply by us all. It was quite a shock to find out that he had finally succumbed to his illness. They are such highly intelligent animals with very deep bonds to each other and are an amazing family, so they are truly missing his presence. I’m crying my eyes out as we never really see them as anything but contented normally and am hoping that this grieving process won’t be too long for them. Phabeni will never be forgotten he much so much joy to us all.💗💗

Oh wow their reaction is incredibly sad and raw. Still hard to believe that Phabeni is no longer with the HERD. Been a very trying week for everyone, but thank you for posting this reaction from the HERD, Setombe and the allmothers must be sad and confused. Also thankful for the explanation of no body for the HERD to smell and the situation regarding captive baby elephants. As I posted in another comments section it is amazing that Kanishya actually has survived past infancy with her injuries and the fragile nature of baby African Elephants. I can't speak for others but I have waited for this video, it is a type of closure and a way to move forward.

I wish more than anything that this courageous little bull could have lived a long life but this is sometimes the harsh,soul crushing reality of rescue,as hard as one can try there’s aspects that we don’t always see when animals are found and are compromised. For the following 7-8 months of his precious life Phabeni knew only kindness and love getting to experience the comfort of a family again your team gave him the fighting chance he otherwise wouldn’t have had people from around the world love him and he fought so valiantly to stay despite being so young he touched us all with his spicy spirit and fighting bluff charges,a little Champion forever in our hearts. Thank you Adine and Co. for doing everything possible to give this little one the life he deserved please take care of yourselves and give the rest of the herd especially precious Setombe lots of TLC,Phabeni there’s several little Ellie’s beyond the 🌈 bridge Mopane,Shawu and Fenya,I hope you found them we love you so much.🐘🪽🤗🩵🩵

I wonder if the manufacturers know that the new formulas that they're making is lacking major nutrients that is needed for the teething Infants than their original formulas, then maybe they can go back to the original? If they won't change the formula, can we get the original formula and invest in making our own brand for the crucial first two years of the teething babies? I don't have much and don't know the first thing on how to get this started but I will contribute and with the worldwide herd family that we have, I believe that we can make this happen ❤ Just a thought

Thank you for explaining this to us; I have spent some time wondering why these babies are so fragile, living their first 2 years on a kind of knife edge. I had no idea of the connection to teething. Perhaps Phabeni's tusk was infected... I wonder if something in the mother's milk helps get the babies through this period. Possibly one day we will find out, and with time be able to improve the formula. So sad to see the herd behaving like this, looking for Phabeni's smell and the reason for his absence. It must be terribly hard for all of you concerned with caring for the little boy, you did all you could and more. Thank you for all the nights and days, the effort and love you gave to him, and continue to give to the herd.

They Know. They feel his loss acutely. Elephants have such finely-tuned emotional intelligence. Obviously the whole herd had bonded with little Phabeni, and loved and valued him hugely as their own baby. His ongoing absence day after day, and the atmosphere among the human carers, will tell them he has passed on, and returned from whence he came, as some day we all must. I feel sure all who mourn Phabeni, and invested so much in making his time at the orphanage so full of love, happiness and care, will support each other through this sad time of grieving. He is carried safe and loved in so many hearts, human, elephant, and of course sheep too (his devoted, round-the-clock carers Spotty and Lambie will miss him terribly). The traumatic loss of his mother and family could easily have ended Phabeni's life when it had barely begun. Who knows what terrible traumas he experienced, or what violence he witnessed with that cruel parting? HERD came to the rescue, scooped him up and restored to him the loving family he had lost. His time at the orphanage and the close relationships he enjoyed there were a miraculous and wonderful gift, that gave him many special experiences of happiness, love, joy and comfort. Phabeni and his life mattered. His footprints will forever remain imprinted at the HERD Elephant Orphanage, and in the hearts of so many who never met him. Forever loved. May he be reunited with his beloved Mama, in some other time and place. XXX

I respect your grief, which the HERD humans, the subscribers here and Jabulani herd doubtless all share. However, letting the Jabulani herd physically respect Phabeni''s carcass was well nigh impossible. If Phabeni's carcass had been presented in the grounds of the Homestead, the elephants might have wanted to bury him by covering his body with leaves and sticks - and that is impossible because the material is not there.. Equally, HERD would have had to leave his body in situ, which in African terms is also impossible.: Mother Nature provides for this in the wild with a host of predators like vultures or hyenas but no way could these undertakers be let loose into the compound, since the elephants alone would not accept it. Worse still, Setombve might have tried to carry Phabeni around with her. Equally, Phabeni''s body could not be left out on the trail,. since the elephants would have wondered how he got there without their knowledge - all they might have done was to pick up the scent of humans and turned on them. If it is of comfort, the elephants undoubtedly knew Phabeni was close to death and died. Setombe was heard screaming. Tokwe, as matriarch, in the video leads her herd back to the Orphanage to pay respect. The story of the Thula Thula herd is instructive: when the human owner died hundreds of miles away, the elephants still knew - maybe they picked up vibes from his widow? A year later to the day, the semi-wild herd returned to the owner's home to pay respect. There is so much the scientists still have to learn about elephant communications. -
@patriciamaclennan56344 ай бұрын
@@Bloodnok49 Thank you for that. It makes complete sense. Humans completely underestimate the intuition of animals. We have a lot to learn from them and especially from these mighty giants. Their ability to communicate over long distances, their very high emotional intelligence is very humbling. I'm sure Phabeni would have communicated with the HERD. They knew what was going on and that he passed.🌈 Such beautiful souls.💟

Thank you for your informative reply. I had not considered that the elephants would have been unwilling to surrender Phabeni's body to the carers and that refusal would have led to the consequences you describe. Yes, it was clear that they did know the baby had died and were distressed. 😭
