An Emotional Moment as the Herd Gather at the Orphanage Without Phabeni

HERD Elephant Orphanage South Africa

Күн бұрын

An unusual event took place as Tokwe, Lundi and some of the other elephants headed to the orphanage to find out where Phabeni was. Normally the herd walk in the opposite direction into the bush for their day of roaming. Matriarch Tokwe led the elephants (and Owen).
Elephants are incredibly intelligent animals and know when something is wrong. It is an emotional moment as Tokwe and the herd no doubt realised that Phabeni was not joining them, and is no longer at the orphanage. There is no way of avoiding this stress, this pain of losing a loved one, not for elephants or humans.
Lundi investigated the smells on the ground closest to the orphanage. Phabeni’s adoptive mother, Setombe joined in the front to trace the scents and detect signs of her baby. Among the elephants here were: Tokwe, Lundi, Kumbura, Fishan, Jabulani, Setombe, Bubi, Zindoga and Klaserie.
During Phabeni’s last night, and in the morning, during his passing, the herd stood outside the orphanage gate. They gathered there. After a while, they turned around and went to the stand under the homestead roof, waiting for the carers.
Adine thought of putting Phabeni’s body outside for the herd to smell and say their goodbyes. But ultimately after much deliberation with the carers, we decided against it.The reason for this decision was that Stavros, Liverson and Adine’s scents covered Phabeni’s body, and we feared the herd might think that we harmed the calf and so see us as a threat.
The day after Phabeni passed away, the females were in the bush and turned back, and came to the gate. We are not sure if they were looking for Phabeni, but it appeared as though they were coming to pay their respects, as you would at a funeral.
Phabeni’s death is not taken lightly and our veterinary advisors are having many conversations about the possibilities of the causes of death. We need to look at every possible way to prevent future elephant orphans from going through a similar scenario.
We do believe that teething added a considerable challenge for Phabeni. At the age of 8 months, babies usually start teething or tusking, and it takes approximately 2 to 3 months for the first tusk to show.During this period, the babies lose their appetite, and as they are on a milk formula, which is not as good as their mother's own milk, they do not have the antibodies to fight any infection on their own. The calves are delicate and not one recipe is standard for all baby elephants up to the age of 2,5 years. Phabeni’s first tusk was cut a few weeks before he passed away, and the second tusk was extremely swollen.
As per the words and expertise of Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and their elephant orphanage in Kenya:
“No-one knows the secret of wild natural Mother Elephants, whose calves cut their initial first four molars seemingly without any problem, but here in our Nairobi Nursery the teething process is invariably life threatening. We have lost many otherwise healthy calves during this critical process. In a captive situation the teething in baby elephants, occurs between the age of 1 and 4 months, triggers fevers, lethargy, loss of appetite and life threatening diarrheoa that is difficult to bring under control, not helped by the fact that the formula of the humanized base milk we use has apparently been adjusted by subsequent manufacturers, and is not quite as good as it used to be for essentially fragile infant elephant babies. During teething elephant babies usually have to be put on intravenous life supporting electrolytes to replace the fluids they have lost through diarrheoa.”
“Nature has made infant African elephants exceedingly fragile; they can be fine one day and dead the next and one can never be sure that a calf will survive until it is past its second birthday. “The hand-rearing of orphaned elephants is an emotional roller-coaster for those involved, for tragedy stalks success and can strike unexpectedly at any moment.” - Daphne Sheldrick
We need to be strong and continue on for the health and well-being of the rest of the herd in our care. Just because the odds are against us it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t still try to save a life where we can.
Thank you for your support and compassion.

Phabeni was so fortunate to be found when he was orphaned, and cared for by Adine and her amazing team. He was loved by his fellow orphaned sisters Khanyisa, Timisa and Kumbura and adored by his foster mother Setombe and sister Klaserie. Tokwe, Lundi, Bubi, all the girls and all the boys (big and small) were such a supportive family for him and he was always protected and nurtured. Rest in peace, feisty little pumpkin .... you were much, much loved.

I expected the herd to be mourning the loss of Phabeni. I also agree with Adine''s decision not to let the herd pay their respects for concern that they misunderstand the situation. It is such a delicate walk when caring for wildlife. Especially, elephants who are extremely intelligent and family oriented. Caring for orphans is perilous and frought with perils. I will be honest, I cried with them as the y expressed their grief. Especially Setombe who had taken him under her wing. Phabeni knew love from his herd and from everyone in the HERD team. He was very fortunate to have been found when he did. Love to the herd and to the HERD team as you all grieve the loss of Phabeni.

It's very emotional to see the elephants trumpeting and vocalizing like that - they know of his loss, I am sure. After elephant whisperer Lawrence Anthony past away, the herd he had rescued came to the lodge - and still do so every year on the anniversary of his death. I am really sad for Setombe who has lost a baby, but for all the eles who have lost the chance of seeing a new bull grow up in the herd. En Khanyisa het haar klein boetie verloor - what a chance she would have had to play with a younger brother just like Timisa did with her. Oh Phabeni-Peni, we will miss you. Thank you HERD for the information regarding baby elephants and teething - the Sheldrick Trust are really experienced and if they have difficulty, it just shows the challenges that goes into raising these youngsters. Thank you HERD and Dr Rogers for doing your utmost with your care, devotion and perseverance. Thank you also for showing the Herd out in the bush at the end. It was so sad to see Phabeni walking among his family where he will walk no more. But it was very therapeutic and so tranquil to see the elephants go about their day in the beautiful African bush - life goes on ❤❤💔💔🐘🐘🐘🐘

Rosemary I too thought that, so am glad Adine explained the reasoning behind not showing him. I have wondered maybe if Setombe was allowed into the orphanage when he was distressed, if he would have found comfort in that. But maybe that too might have created more stress. Enteritis is very painful so no wonder the little one let out screams, thrashing and making distressing breathing noises. All we can do now is send love and healing to his ellie family, Adine and all the carers. Blessings from Queensland 🐘🐘✨💟

It would appear as though HERD has many Australian supporters. I'm in country NSW and I often don't sleep well throughout the night and so I watched the final video of Phabeni while the night was still dark and I knew that I wouldn't sleep again. I'm glad that Adine explained why Phabeni's little body wasn't displayed to the other elephants but as a retired RN who spent many years assisting in the dying process as a Palliative Care and Aged Care nurse, watching Phabeni in evident pain and distress during his active dying process was very difficult to see! I kept waiting for Dr Rodgers to appear with an IV cocktail of something (I'm not even going to suggest something as I am no elephant expert), but watching him struggle both with his breathing and neurological state, being very agitated, was so bad but regardless of this I knew that Adine and the other carers like Stavros were doing their absolute best to keep him comfortable. Knowing that Phabeni passed away at the time of what would be a gorgeous sunrise on the African continent made me remember previous sunrises with human patients and that all men, women, and animals must die. It's the one inevitably of life that it will end, although some get more time than others! I shall always cherish the memory of this little bull who, like many, left us way too soon! Thanks for reading.

This display of grief and anguish is just heart-wrenching. I have cried every day for the loss of the precious little soul Phabeni, as I am sure have many of the followers of HERD. I cannot imagine the devastation of Adine, Stavros, and the other carers with the passing of this dearest little bull. To see the sorrow of the herd in which sweet Phabeni found his "mother" Setombe and many other loving aunts, uncles, and sisters only underscores what deeply sentient, compassionate, magnificent beings these elephants are. They so loved dear little Phabeni. Thank you for sharing them with us and caring for these giant beautiful souls. 💔🐘 We are truly blessed to have them in our world.

The fact that I am miles away and never met any of you but feel this grief is a testament to you all. How much you give, your care. With your helpful informative videos you allowed beautiful Baby Beni be loved by the world and we unfortunately now see how hard it is. Your videos will continue to help the future generations understand the importance of empathy for others and to respect the natural world around us. This is my love to you. I will always 💕 him and remember that feisty little Bull I mourned for him like a family member and will never forget His name PHABENI 💕🙏🐘🙏💕 I was really feeling for the other elephants worried for Setombe how is she excepting and praying for Her. Little Khanysia 💖 seemed to hover over him as though she knew he needed extra support. This unique HERD really has proved to all of us that every individual is welcome and accepted as a family member. That is what makes these Beautiful Majestic Creatures so much better than us humans. This is so Beautiful but emotional to witness. My prayers to each and every one of them and to the rest of the HERD family the Carer's and especially Adine who has sacrificed herself to the well-being of one of African greatest treasures. I wish more than anything that this courageous little bull could have lived a long life but this is sometimes the harsh, soul crushing reality of rescue,as hard as one can try there’s aspects that we don’t always see when animals are found and are compromised. For the following 7-8 months of his precious life Phabeni knew only kindness and love getting to experience the comfort of a family again your team gave him the fighting chance he otherwise wouldn’t have had people from around the world love him and he fought so valiantly to stay despite being so young he touched us all with his spicy spirit and fighting bluff charges,a little Champion forever in our hearts. Thank you Adine and Co. for doing everything possible to give this little one the life he deserved please take care of yourselves and give the rest of the herd especially precious Setombe lots of TLC,Phabeni there’s several little Ellie’s beyond the 🌈 bridge Mopane,Shawu and Fenya,I hope you found them we love you so much.🐘🪽🤗🩵🩵

I wonder if the manufacturers know that the new formulas that they're making is lacking major nutrients that is needed for the teething Infants than their original formulas, then maybe they can go back to the original? If they won't change the formula, can we get the original formula and invest in making our own brand for the crucial first two years of the teething babies? I don't have much and don't know the first thing on how to get this started but I will contribute and with the worldwide herd family that we have, I believe that we can make this happen ❤ Just a thought

I respect your grief, which the HERD humans, the subscribers here and Jabulani herd doubtless all share. However, letting the Jabulani herd physically respect Phabeni''s carcass was well nigh impossible. If Phabeni's carcass had been presented in the grounds of the Homestead, the elephants might have wanted to bury him by covering his body with leaves and sticks - and that is impossible because the material is not there.. Equally, HERD would have had to leave his body in situ, which in African terms is also impossible.: Mother Nature provides for this in the wild with a host of predators like vultures or hyenas but no way could these undertakers be let loose into the compound, since the elephants alone would not accept it. Worse still, Setombve might have tried to carry Phabeni around with her. Equally, Phabeni''s body could not be left out on the trail,. since the elephants would have wondered how he got there without their knowledge - all they might have done was to pick up the scent of humans and turned on them. If it is of comfort, the elephants undoubtedly knew Phabeni was close to death and died. Setombe was heard screaming. Tokwe, as matriarch, in the video leads her herd back to the Orphanage to pay respect. The story of the Thula Thula herd is instructive: when the human owner died hundreds of miles away, the elephants still knew - maybe they picked up vibes from his widow? A year later to the day, the semi-wild herd returned to the owner's home to pay respect. There is so much the scientists still have to learn about elephant communications. -

@@Bloodnok49 Thank you for that. It makes complete sense. Humans completely underestimate the intuition of animals. We have a lot to learn from them and especially from these mighty giants. Their ability to communicate over long distances, their very high emotional intelligence is very humbling. I'm sure Phabeni would have communicated with the HERD. They knew what was going on and that he passed.🌈 Such beautiful souls.💟

I'm reminded that predators often take the babies, because they are easier targets in the wild. Those predators are of course not evil; they're surviving just like the elephants. The life of an elephant is likely filled with the agony of losing children. It is a small blessing that some orphans and strays can avoid this fate in the sanctuary. Many thanks and praises to HERD staff for providing this unique paradise, even if nothing cannot prevent all tragedy.

Oh wow their reaction is incredibly sad and raw. Still hard to believe that Phabeni is no longer with the HERD. Been a very trying week for everyone, but thank you for posting this reaction from the HERD, Setombe and the allmothers must be sad and confused. Also thankful for the explanation of no body for the HERD to smell and the situation regarding captive baby elephants. As I posted in another comments section it is amazing that Kanishya actually has survived past infancy with her injuries and the fragile nature of baby African Elephants. I can't speak for others but I have waited for this video, it is a type of closure and a way to move forward.

I've also been waiting to see Setombe. She is my focus now. She lost so much💔 and may now also lose her new found regard from the other mums in the herd. I pray they don't abandon her.

I remember watching a documentary long ago about African elephants, and, when the elephants are roaming the area of their elephant graveyard, they pick up and caress the bones of their family, who have passed away. It was a very moving moment to see that. Elephants are such an amazing and intelligent animals and I believe have rich emotional lives. We’re just beginning to understand a little bit about.

Bless all who take care of the herd. Phabeni was loved and didn’t pass away alone. There can be some comfort in that. I know the human and elephant hearts are broken and must go on. I hurt for you all💔 Rest easy sweet Phabeni🐘

That something as natural as teething could be so tragic for little Phabeni, so so sad.

Teething was only one of his issues. The poor baby had recurring infections from his dart wound, and acute enteritis which is very painful. Combined with limited nutrition (because he was in pain) ... Was just too much for our wee baby bull 💔
