I'm thinking it was a "grab and go" predator like a fox, coyote, or large bird of prey like an owl or hawk. I had a friend whose full-grown duck was snatched by an owl not long before sunset. I have a feeling it wasn't a domestic cat like Pablo. He likely would have plucked or pulled out some of the down and you would have found it.

I doubt it would be a fox or coyote as there is a electric fence which would deter most predators and Toby dog would've smelled the fox and coyote before it came close to the tree line . Toby dog has established the farm as his territory which would deter every animal except the bears

its likely a predator, bird of prey for example. cats like pablo dont usually eat their prey whole, they leave the unsavory bits that they did not want to eat laying around. they can eat it whole, but usually only do so if they dont have much other food.

Truthfully my cats don’t bother my birds. But if they do catch a bird, or rodent, at most they eat the head. Well, my young house cats are super interested in the chicks but my garage cats somehow instinctively know what to kill, and not. Missing bodies usually signal bird of prey.Pablo would not be able to break down the long bones.

All the birds I've found in my yard or on my back deck that have been killed by a cat are only missing their stomachs. The possums will then carry off the rest of the bird overnight. I have no idea what they do with them or how much they eat. We have no racoons around here so I'm sure it's the possums that come around every night for leftover cat food and water. They also eat the chicken and chicken bones that I sometimes put out for the outdoor cat.

Owls could take it no problem! Went out in my backyard one morning & found HALF an adult rabbit, sheared in half as if by a cleaver. Guessed owl--they have fierce talons! A gosling would be no problem. Like others, seriously doubt it was Pablo. Cat kills are obvious from the circle of feathers.

I was also thinking about snakes. A decently sized one could easily scare a chicken off her nest and eat the eggs, or scare the adult goose away while it targets the gossling. @goldengryphon
@goldengryphon 3 жыл бұрын
Knowing that livestock are likely to die from any number of things, and doing your best to keep those things at a distance, does mean you will lose once in a while. I feel for Morgan in losing a gosling. It does hurt. So, this past Tuesday, I lost a broody goose. I had a nesting goose have an egg explode underneath her, and she was quickly fly struck. By the time I knew there was a problem, she had a full maggot infestation and infection going on. I did my best, but she died in my arms. Sometimes it's gross and hard and awful. But then you get a chance to sit and chill with the critters and it gets better.

@RoulicisThe
@RoulicisThe 3 жыл бұрын
It works against sheep and goats because the eagle can't lift them from the ground and go off. With birds, especially small ones like a gosling that the predator can just swoop from the ground without having to land, and against that a dog can't do much.
@Retrieverman1

@@RoulicisThe The way the Central Asians and Kangal breeds operate. They actually bark and the hawks and birds of prey in the sky. There is a viral series of photos of a kangal trying to take out a drone by leaping the air, even though the drone is maybe 25 feet in the air. A friend of mine uses Central Asians to protect her Muscovy ducks and chickens, and the dogs have greatly reduced predation from those predators. Birds of prey will not attack anything on the ground while a dog is looking at it and challenging it. Maremmas are great for land-based predators, but they don't have an instinct to look up to the sky and guard like those breeds do.

I could not find it and the dogs sleep in the house at night so I know it wasn’t the dogs. So today I was down to 2 ducks. Came home this evening my granddaughter told me that they saw 1 fly away. So at this point I’m relieved! That means that the one that was missing this morning probably flew away this morning. So now I have 1 wild duck left. I’m preparing myself that it will fly away tomorrow. It makes me sad. But I knew there was a chance they would fly away. Still, I will miss them.

I have good results wit my allergies with zyrtec daily and flonase when it is worse. I have 4 indoor dogs that sleep with me and I am allergic to cats and we have an 18 yr. Old cat that stays indoors mostly now and it helps a lot with the red blotchy itchiness, sneezing and watery eyes and tickle in my throat. This is how I live cos I love my babies. Hope this helps!

Well, no not necessarily. My cat Bella could kill a bird outside, carry it inside and find a comfy spot then eat everything except the beak and a couple of the really tough wing feathers and she didn’t get a drop of blood on herself or on the floor. If she did it when I wasn’t around, the only way I knew was from those feathers left behind, not from blood anywhere. Having said that, I don’t think it was Pablo either. I think it was a bird of prey.

Since it's so hot why not try grooming Toby dog? Getting all the extra fur brushed out and the possible matting taken care of could help with heat, especially since its summer.

Yes my pyrenees sheds year round but especially when he sheds his winter coat. The more i comb him the better his fur looks and feels and the fewer mats he has.

Toby appears to be a Pyrennes or Pyr cross. They shed but not like other breeds. They "blow" their coats which means they shed all at once, 2 times a year. Often times, sheep ranchers shear their Pyrs along with the sheep. Just an FYI.

@@staceymavilia9510 toby is actually a maremma which is very similar, they are slightly smaller and their ears are slightly different. I have a pyrenees myself and he sheds all year round, although i agree that when he sheds his winter coat it is dramatically worse, you can pull it out in clumps. As for the ranching dogs, they probably arent ever brushed and probably get severely matted with embedded dirt and burrs. Severe matting usually does require some cutting but i doubt they shear them to the degree that the sheep are. Not just youtube but my vet and multiple groomers have confirmed double coated dogs should not be shorn except for extreme circumstances. Morgan.makes sure he has shade and fresh water, about the only other thing he might could do is run a heavy duty extension cord to power a heavy duty fan. Since i am in florida my giant white fur ball ends up spending much of the summer asleep in the air conditioning

"I'm not a cat person" Boop, boop, boop, boop... Hahaha!! So sorry for the gosling, I was happy to see a "wild" one on the farm. But like others said, I don't think Pablo's the one who killed it. Your pond really needs a fresh source of water to keep it going, doesn't need to be really big. That's what my uncle did with his and it's been there since the 80's.

I'm sorry about the gosling, that's tough (Pablo, you stinker... but I still adore you. You're very much a cat.), but like you I'm surprised that the mama goose was letting it wander so freely. I really admire your pluck, Morgan, and your determination to learn and grow from adversity. I think that's the way a good farmer has to shift his mentality: it's the long term blossoming of the farm that matters, not to be overly dismayed simply by the short-term speedbumps.

There is a fabric concrete that you can make that can be shaped like a short canopy for Shade out in open areas. I made for my ferals. We have Osprey, Falcon, Hawks, Owls, problems so it provides shelter and security. Cheaper than wood and you can put as many air vents you want. Would even work for Toby. The videos on making pots and water fountains and the commercial ( use/ product) for portable quansen huts/ use to build videos gave me the ideal. Hope this helps.

This vlog sounded like you were describing my farm exactly. Last year went smooth. Expanded this year and every week there’s something I need to amend. Catching pigs in the woods at midnight to finding the fox that stole 6 chicks in a week. Even though I’m going to kill all these animals eventually for food I’m still devastated when something goes wrong on the farm. I just remind myself I’m doing the best I can and improving everyday. Thank you for sharing your farming experience. You inspire me. God bless. 💕
