About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

Your farm may be loosing money but remember you just sunk a lot of expense this year in infrastructure and vehicles and other things. Also consider it paying for peace of mind to loose money for a short while doing something you love.

Jerry B yea I wonder how he comes up with these figures and no way will he ever recover the costs from what he's put into the farm so far for another 20 years or more the tractor alone would need a $1000 a year in profit to recover that money over 20 years

Haven't watched the video except for the first few minutes. I'm a business accountant of 30 years so I have a suggestion. Ask your CPA/tax preparer to help confirm this idea. During your momma-goose-egg-hatching experiment you lost TONS of eggs. That experiment could be considered research and development. It could be said that the department in your business that manages the animals, the egg hatching department, "sold" the R&D department the eggs for the experiment. Find out the cost of the "sold" eggs (lost income) and maybe you can declare that as R&D expense on your taxes. That might help with the overall tax bill this year when set off against your two day job incomes. I do this kind of stuff ALL the time in the company I am the controller for. I hope this idea helps you a bit.

It’s probably still better for him and Alison to take the standard deduction?
@jerm6996
@jerm6996 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah depending on the scale of operations it might still be better to take the standard deduction, but this could still be something important to consider for the future as his operations scale up in terms of helping out on that tax bill! Hopefully Morgan sees this haha.
@threecatsdancing
@threecatsdancing 3 жыл бұрын
@@Matt-xc6sp I'm talking business taxes, not personal taxes. The farm is a business so he has to file a business tax return. Business taxes and their deductions are calculated on a different form from personal taxes and their deductions. He and Allison can take whatever form 1040 deduction that is appropriate for their circumstances (remember, they own a home and if they have a mortgage then the interest plus property tax payments might be higher than the standard deduction). If not, then yes, standard deduction for themselves as personal deductions might be better. But the expenses (losses) incurred from R&D is declared on Schedule C or Schedule C-EZ, depending on what their CPA/tax preparer advises. I don't do business taxes but I work closely with our CPA and prepare our financial reports with a line item of R&D on all the expenses, including parts moved from inventory to experiments, that support that research and development, because it is partially deductable as business costs. This is just a suggestion for him to mention to his tax person. That was a LOT of eggs he could have sold.

That's an interesting point. I'll ask my accountant about it and see what she thinks.

@@threecatsdancing Farm income goes on schedule F. And it’s very funky compared to a business tax return. If I recall correctly, there’s no cost basis in the eggs being hatched (the laying geese aren’t being paid a commission per egg), though there are costs for hatching and raising them. There are various other tax breaks for farming. R&D is an interesting idea to pursue, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the current effort doesn’t meet the definition. I believe it requires research that would be new for all comparable farms, not just something that’s new to you but other farmers have already done.

I listened to farmers complaining to our local politician at a town hall when I was a kid in the fifties. After a pile of sad stories he told them one of his old friends who was a farmer won the million dollar lottery. When he asked the old guy what he was going to do, the fella said, "I been a farmer all my life so I will just keep doing that till the money is all gone". Good to see things and people have not changed.

If your birds have plenty of pasture to roam on during the day, one thing you can try to reduce feed costs is not feeding them first thing in the morning. Open their houses and let them out in the morning, but don't feed them until later (say, late morning/lunch time). They will be hungry and go forage for themselves. Then you feed them later to make up the difference. Some breeds are better foragers than others, so pay attention to how much you are putting out (vs before) to see if it's actually helpful.

Infrastructure and cattle (eggs for the birds?) are not costs but investments. The new machine to hatch the eggs in, is also a investment. The birds that you are keeping to next year are also investment. Anything that will be there in 2022 is an investment, not a cost of operations. Tax vise... it is a totally different thing. You should look into the comment from Aimee Moisa. Taxing is different between Countries...

Keeping cattle on dirt/mud/their own shit is going to cause you no end of trouble. I know you have some dream of just piling on more and more hay but cows aren't ducks or geese. Cows weigh a half ton and have relatively narrow hooves to carry all that weight and they will sink right down into that muck and their hooves will get wet and then the trouble will start. There's a reason the dairy barn had the cattle on a higher level and was built to drop the shit and other refuse down and away from the cattle. Keeping the cows on the ground level is going to at the minimum mean you will be paying a farrier to come out and fix the cows hooves, which is not cheap, or you will have downer cattle, which you cannot harvest for meat, due to infections. I know nothing about ducks and geese but cattle I do know. This is a very bad idea. You need to keep the cattle on a surface that can be mucked out.

I'd assume with that weather they get up there they'd be stuck in that barn for months, once the mistake of their flooring is done you won't be changing it till spring. Having said that, the guys not a complete idiot, I'm sure he'll be asking local guys and experienced people online about everything long before dedicating himself to that huge decision.

Morgan, Cows. For what it's worth. Have your vet review the area you propose to house your cattle in overwinter before they arrive. Space per cow for eating and lying down is important. It is easy for them to get stressed inside. Ventilation paramount and hard floors and poop removal essential. There will be a lot of slurry. You need to get it out and put it somewhere. The layout of your existing barn should be signalling to you how this is done. You would be a fool to work against the principles in plain sight and what you already know about this building, which is purpose built. You will need to perform a visual inspection of each cow every day when they are inside to check they are OK. Pass amongst them regularly. If you don't think you will be 100% ready this year. Do it next year. Once you pay yourself a wage from the farm, you will do well to break even each year. If you start paying yourself out of the farm you will have succeeded. Be lucky. Be smart. Regards Stephen.

Hey Morgan, Love the show I've been following for a while now. As a business owner myself, one thing I feel you're doing is spreading yourself to wide. You're not being patient enough to play the long game. You're doing decent within your core business but expanding rapidly horizontally and not vertically mastering. Best case scenario is everything progresses slowly simultaneously, worst case you start to hurt your core business. Then again, I'm just an admirer. I'll continue to observe your journey. Yoon.

Thinking about my own experiences with cattle-I wasn’t raised on a farm and so I had no idea that the “hay” I was feeding my animals had zero nutrition, I thought all hay was the same. Boy did I need an education about what to feed and how much. Also, don’t try to give a cow a vaccination without a head gate and chute! And don’t forget to put lights in the barn, animals don’t like to go into a dark shadowy place. Just in case you’ve never heard any of this, but you probably already know this stuff-I learned it the hard way!

As you prepare for the cattle and butchering of those cattle you need to also think about the who will be doing processing part. In my area the smaller USDA inspected processors are backed up 6-8 months or more because of recent shut downs. You need to be lining that up now to ensure you have your ducks in a row (see what I did there) when it comes time to butcher. Locals here are having to feed their cattle well beyond the profitability point because of the extended wait time.

I grew up on a goat farm with a herd of about 25 head of dairy goats (plus 1 billy) with a barn that held way more alfalfa than the herd could eat in a winter. We raised 3 calves for beef as a side venture. Well, those haybags ate the whole barn and then some, we had to buy feed to get them thru the winter. There was a pretty big payoff at the end, but it didn't cover all the costs. I'd say start small and try to winter over a pair of calves and see if you can manage to keep winter feed costs down... Or once you get your beef jerky recipe finalized. see if the jerky sector of your business plan is viable by purchasing a steer at the auction, learn how to butcher it, and sell the beef jerky. Wish you the best of luck on expanding Gold Shaw farms!

I really think you stuffed too many goose eggs into that incubator that not everyone was covered with the appropriate heat. Keep your head up friend, find what is the most profit able to what you love. Whether that keeping some alive to produce eggs for the next session or everything else you love. You are also building your farm up too!! Also keep up with the merch if that’s profitable!! We would love to support you

Good thing for KZbin and sponsorships! I’ve asked before since we are on the topic of finances…How much is that in total?

Anything financial that he shares with us is personal. Your question is like somebody asking you how much you're paid for the work you do. I'm interested too but I don't think he'll answer and I understand why.

I dunno how much one makes in sponsorships, but estimated yt earnings can be looked via social blade

He'll earn more from those sponsorships than he does from the farm sales, I doubt you're allowed to say exact amounts as there will be something about it in the terms he'll sign when agreeing to do the ads

Thanks for the Video, I enjoy hearing them. Anyone who has been there done that knows that Farming is not just for money, but for the joy of it. Remember those of you out there, if it were not for the Farmers of America, you would go hungry. I still remember the day my geese got into moms new corn Patch. It did not go well for me that day! I am lucky to be alive!

All the animals on my Grandparents' 300 acre farm were never killed for food. Grandparents were vegetarians and all the animals served a purpose: goats-clearing land, sheep-sheared for wool (grandma made/spun her own wool thread and she also sheared them herself), chickens, geese, ducks were used to sell eggs all around the area, feathers gathered and summers we spent there we had chores of washing/drying feathers for feather blankets, beds, pillows. Cows were used to milk (3 times a day by hand) for cheeses, butters, buttermilk, creams. They did have a few pigs and the piglets were sold. They had acres and acres of crops they also sold and we canned and also sold extra canned foods. They also sold fields of hay.

Did you already thought about having a patrons page ? It would get you a somewhat fix income and you could give small price reduction on your farm products (boosting sales a bit). I don't know if that would make that much of a difference tbh but maybe something to consider. ^^

Did you figure out a way of getting around the butchering issues you had? Well, the plucking issues. I’d love to see a video of that showing what you do now next time you harvest some.

Hope your crunch the numbers on cattle for your area. They can be a steady source of income or an expensive hobby. I used to do cattle, made a bunch of money then words got out and next thing you know 12 farms turn into ranches. So I had larger competition with deeper pocket. Cattle price went down and price of hay/feed went up to a point where I the return wasn't worth the effort. Sold of my herd.
