By 94, even as early as 93, how she performed makes sense and connects with what Sabatini stated in interviews after she retired - that she was spent: mentally, physically and tired of all the excess attention and expectation of the press and people in Argentina. She started questioning her passion for the game, by this point, and sought out help. Plus she started really developing more interest in things outside of the game such as her known business savvy.

Watching this again, it's striking how different this match was to their 1991 matches on green clay. In those matches, Gaby was moving well and playing really assertively, often making sneak attacks to the net. In this match, she is playing like she just got out of bed about ten minutes before the match. She doesn't really seem to know where she is.

True. Remember that this is the period Gabriela was now mentally and physically becoming spent from playing on the tour, tired of media attention, and of course this was now after the big meltdown in her career: Roland Garros 93 semifinals. It was also the period that Gabriela was finding more interest in things outside of tennis such as her business world. In post-career interviews she mentioned it was starting in the mid-90s that she started questioning her motivation which led to discussing it with her loved ones, her coach and even a psychologist.

@@alexsdb9712there are some really good interviews with her. I know that she'd worked with the famous sports psychologist, Jim Loehr, in 1990 and he'd played a huge role in getting her to her best form in that early 90s stretch.

@@zeddeka her second serve and serve on general in 1994 was worse than in 1990/1991.. she would tend to attack looking to finish the point at net.. here in this final she is trying to develop an inside out forehand winning shot..forgetting that she could build up an play to make her come to the net.. Take for example their 1994 Usopen semifinal first set she is all over the place gets self.destructed 6/1 with around 18 unforced errors.. she takes the net away from Arantxa in the second and despite 3 double faults in the tiebreak she put herself in position to get a set a piece..until she approached to the net 3 straight times to Arantxa's best shot ..her backhand and lost the last 3 points.

Si Graf fue beneficiada por el ataque a Seles ni hablemos de Arantxa. Jamás hubiera sido número 1. Lo que le reconozco es que aprovechó la oportunidad y no la dejó pasar.

Gabi's former coach, Carlos Kirmayr, used to tell her that the key to playing Arantxa was patience. You can see here that she really no longer had that patience.

yes, i think 1994 was her last good full year on tour.

@@dm7170 yeah, apart from that brief revival at the end of 1994, she was a shadow of her former self. Her movement in particular seemed so much worse than 1991 / 1992

Yeah i was checking her GS performances there, incredible that her last Wimbledon was at age 25. Nowadays the girls aren’t even peaking at that age but like you mentioned her undoubtable peak was at 21/22 yrs of age.

@@dm7170 she was a semi finalist at the french open aged just 15. So much tennis behind her at such a young age. Perhaps not surprising that she was happy to get out of it at the end.

I don't think that was the case...he made gaby to attack the net much more during their peak time 90/92 and she had a good fare share of wins vs Arantxa at the time.

Sabatini owned her for years . I think what changed was Sanchez hitting that flat backhand more and Sabatini less likely to hit out on the backhand.

Gaby was in a mental slump. She didn't win a tournament from May 1992 to November 1994. Her game, her fitness and her eagerness just weren't there. She never beat Steffi Graf again after 1992, after winning so many of their matches 91/92.
