Using a cyclonic dust collector works better than modifying the unit, I got a conversion kit from rockler that turns a barrel into your dust collection bin, no need to modify anything. That unit is a solid setup, runs really smooth and pretty quiet
@JohnFagg-p2x2 күн бұрын
Well done to the H&S committee.As the sawdust is basically free falling from the edger. The mark 2 version could have an electronic dimmer in circuit to reduce the fan speed. Dust could then freely fall into the widest diameter bin or long wooden rectangular box for easy disposal. Mk3 could duct over the edger then into the main dust collector system.
@Chr.U.Cas16222 күн бұрын
👍👌👏 Well done. Seems to work just fine. Having a kind of a 200 ltr collection barrel with enough venting will complete the freshly built edger's sawdust blower. Happy new year. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and especially health to all of you.

Mark, Edger Sawdust Removal: Under the edger unit, you need to make a big funnel going from just under the in-feed conveyor over to the out-feed rollers. A custom fit upper perimeter frame and maybe stout fabric funnel going down to your suction box below. That should catch all the light sawdust that is escaping now. You should try and run some schedule 40 PVC buried in a trench going through the chop saw conveyor break, then use flexible hose to connect into your piping currently going to the saw dust shack out back. You already have one connection tapping into it now.

hi there looks like it will work . just a thought ,could you use the bag that came with the blower cut the end opposite the hose , make a doughnut,looking adapter to fit over the trash or what ever you use to catch the dust ,stapple the big end of the bag to the wood adapter , the bag will still release the air . my 1/2 cent best to all john

Great video Mark, you could have the discharge hose go into an 250gallon ibc tote, easy to move around with the loader when full. Just cut a hole the same diameter as your hose and you could even use a septic tank gasket to seal it in. Just a thought. Cheers from Way up north in Canada.

You have gotten some good suggestions. About twenty years ago I installed dust collection in my shop. I am having flashbacks. You need to improve on the hopper under the blades. Once you expand the opening at the top the suction velocity drops to nearly nothing. I called the manufacturer of tractor trailer trailers and told the lady that answered the phone I wanted to buy some of the Hula Skirts they use under them to cut down on the spray. I was going to use them to improve on the "containment" at the top. She got such a kick out of me calling them Hula Skirts she sent me some of free. You could increase the size of the discharge above the container to drop the velocity. Cover the container with the fabric from the bag to let the air out.

I use the same kind of blower as a dust collector for my bandsaw. In my situation I removed the wheels and mounted it a board. I then mounted it to a doorway using hinges so I can move it out of the way to access the closet (the closet door was removed years ago). If you use that bag, make sure it doesn't get wet - it will soak up water quicker than a sponge.

Alternative setup: Make a cubic or rectangular box, two 4" holes in the top plate. Between the holes, on the inside of the box, make a separator wall going to 4 inches 'deep' . Attach the fan to the 'exhaust' of the cubicle and the other hole goes to the collector bin on the edger. This way the majority of the sawed particles does not go through the fan, the airspeed is lower and you can use the linnen bag as the terminal air cleaner. And you can place the HF fan where ever you want.
@dagwood13273 күн бұрын
I had a 1 1/2 horse harbor freight dust collector but I hated emptying the dust bag because the bag was too hard to put back on. I took a 55 gallon plastic drum with a plywood lid and some foam weather stripping for a seal. Put a pvc 90 going into the drum pointed to make it swirl like the cyclones. Then I made another pvc fitting comming out to the dust collection bag on the backside of the 90. It worked great. I rarely had to empty the collection bag. In your situation you won’t need a filter and bag but you would need to bring the blower to the out direction of the drum. It will swirl and drop out in the barrel and blow air out the blower. When it starts blowing sawdust it is time to empty the drum. I used it for years. If people knew how it worked cyclone sales would drop. I don’t use it anymore because I live way out in the country and I just blow the dust out the side of my building now.

This form of engineering has gone through several names. The current none offensive and none gender deficient is “On Site Engineering” when the right people see the problem it can be an inspiration to even a “Rocket Scientist”. Make it from stuff “On Site” prove it works THEN Gutenberg the design… A perfect way of overcoming a problem. Keep it up gents it’s great.

Looks like you need to enclose the exaust hood more under the edger. I would use aluminum flashing and aluminum duct tape to completely enclose the saw hood. Then most of what's flying around would be collected. Do you want to empty its collector box with the loader bucket? A big open top bin with a hinged front panel. Taller will work better to catch the turbulent outflow, it will all fall down into the corners. Maybe a tarp stretched over the top, but with slack to let the pressure out. I have a cyclone on mine but it's so flying dust doesn't upset the neighbors. It's hard to get a wooden bin to seal to about a 3" vacuum, so I would avoid that if you can. Good luck and keep it clean.😅

Hey Mark, I think you need to adapt your hose to come in on the side of your catch container so you get a cyclone action in there. Then the particulates will precipitate out of the slower air in the center. The bag they sent you goes on top, and blows up like a balloon. That's how your air escapes the system. I'm confident you will get it dialed in- you always do! Thanks for sharing.
