Then as time goes by you become less satisfied and more in pain, until you do it again. Drive-reduction theory, etc. etc. the metaphor is ultimately uninteresting and sheds no light on anything UNLESS you deduce from it that the solution is to stop at the midway point and face the pain, and that that is what maturity is... but Jack never derives anything deeper from the metaphor.

I read that a lot, but what are you trying to say by that? I am pretty sure almost every movie is "in love with it self" because why would someone want to make it otherwise? (I am not talking about blockbusters) - Anyway, the movie also can be so self indulgent, because of the Verge character that clearly sees through the narcistic nature of the movie. As does any reflected human starts to see through his own narcisistic traits. I am sure Lars at least was at some point very full of himself and to a degree still is. But this movie shows that he is aware of it, has a counter voice that is asking the right questions and channels his energy into his work as a release instead of becoming, oh I don't know... a serial killer? :D

I think that’s the point. I haven’t seen the movie myself but, from what I know, Jack isn’t necessarily meant to be spitting some insane wisdom here since he isn’t meant to be glorified or seen as perfectly logical
@gsmooth4279 Жыл бұрын
@@YodaOnABenderimo the film is a satire of serial killer movies on one level, and destructive nihilism as a viewpoint on the other. Jack provides many glorified descriptions of his actions (murder is art, being a predator is natural, I embrace being a psychopath), but Verge counters them by calling them tedious and uninspired. To decide that everything is equal, both good and evil, so that you can relish in the evil without guilt, is an idea that is portrayed as the opposite of powerful. While the film is incredibly pretentious at first glance, I think this is a device to mock serial killer content. It actually does seriously delve into the mind of a psychopath, but this may be the only film that makes an effort not to glorify it. It’s a cold, brutal case study disguised as a dramatic art piece, that also mocks dramatic art pieces on the subject
