The progression of Burt Lancaster's career is a marvel. He started off playing charismatic tough guys, then he became a fairly versatile leading man, and finally he made the transistion to a character actor of almost unparalleled brillance. Few could touch his performances in Judgement at Nuremberg, Elmer Gantry, The Swimmer, and Atlantic City. Yes I know, I need to watch The Leopard !

the manner in which she leverages his sacrifice for her in philly to emotionally support her supposed 'confession' is brilliant. great femme fatale moment

Even though we know his outcome, as brilliantly shown in the beginning, you still hoped he got away. *Film noir* at its best.

William Conrad was only 26 in this movie. He looked and sounded a lot more mature.
