The school's sports stars are busy trying to secure athletic scholarships to college, but football player Kordel's dreams of leaving Orangeburg - and experiencing a more ethnically diverse America - seem beyond his grasp.
We meet Mykenzie, one of the few white students at the school. Her mum recently sent her to the school to try to combat ethnic segregation in the town, but when Mykenzie invites a number of new friends to her 16th-birthday party, things don't quite go to plan.
Meanwhile, star pupil Jalena tries to recover from some disappointing news, and basketball captain Rendull seeks some fatherly advice on his future.
From AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL EP3: Six-part documentary series filmed over the course of one year following the staff and students at a predominantly African-American high school in South Carolina.

I agree with Ra-Ra’s Dad when he said “if you broke and not doing nothing, then you’re a joke, but if you’re broke and doing something then you’re a winner” best thing to ever say to someone that need some guidance. Way to go Dad.

This happens in A LOT of schools.. I completely agree with you. You can be whatever you want to be as long as you put the hard work and effort into achieving your goals. It’s unfortunate that so many kids aren’t taught this. Nothing worth having is given to you. It’s earned. But earning it, makes the struggle worth it. Nothing should hold you back from being what you what to be.. there needs to be more encouragement and discussed opportunities for kids. They are our future after all. So their futures should be vital.

@@joeeblowe race in general doesn’t have to be the center of everything.. when I was in school, race never came up. It was never an issue. For years. But for some reason now the media pushes and pushes it to the point to where EVERYTHING has to be about it. It has caused nothing but division and hate. Culture is one thing and it should be continued, appreciated, and shared.. but the subject of race is irrelevant. Comedians can’t even do comedy anymore without getting canceled. Which was exactly how comedy started. The comment above didn’t imply that white people are the center of everything. Because NOONE is saying that. The comment was stating literally what my comment says.. that everything shouldn’t be about race. Until the media and the people stop bringing it up, the hate will not stop. Again, its irrelevant.

If I were Mykenzie, I would not have invited my uncle. To me, he seems like a real redneck. His reaction to the teen smoking weed was totally out of proportion. He could just have asked to please do it outside and not inside the house. I live in Canada where Cannabis has been legal since 2018. The lost phone situation could have been handled better as well. Most phones look very alike, and it easily happens that you take somebody else's phone by accident. It's happened to me a few times. They should have just turned off the music, asked everybody to be quiet, called her number and then looked for it.

Seriously. These kids with A's despite such difficulties are even smarter than privileged kids with A's. In my opinion, a kid with these troubles even scraping a C is equivalent to a privileged kid making A's. Remove that barrier, and they'd perform BETTER than the privileged kids. I was a white kid in a predominantly black high school school in south London. Race was never a big issue for us, social class was though as we were located down the road from Dulwich College, a private school; those DC boys made it clear on occasion what they thought; they saw poor, we were looked down upon and it was painfully obvious how detached we were to their world. The class divide was more prevalent than any racial or colour-based issue for us.

@@clarissa8477 agreed, the colour divide is the easily peddled rhetoric; of course it is an important and topical issue but it basically drowns out the class narrative, which is what is wanted. You do know that black girls and boys get bullied by black kids too, right? And you said all the black girls were bald headed, which probably isn’t true, is a negative stereotype, and blatantly disrespectful. Bullying is not okay but have you considered that your disrespectful personality might have had something to do with it, and not just due to you being white? Just something to think about.

Girl stop. No black kid in TODAY's world has had to face what Ruby Bridges did back in the day. Stop trying to make comparisons with the days of segregation, this is a different generation with different values. You might not like it, but it's TRUE that growing up white in a majority black school is no walk in the park and racism is rampant, (I can attest to that personally). Just because white kids are now opening up to speak about their experiences of racism doesn't mean they're whining and I know good and well you wouldn't say that if they were black. Please check yourself and your own racism. Thank you.

I hated being one of the hundreds of "white military dependent" students that were bussed into Wm. H. Spencer High in Columbus to achieve desegregation in 1972. All us white students soon learned that if you were teamed up for a class-project with black students from Columbus, the white students were doomed to do all the heavy lifting so that the entire group would not receive an "F". The black students knew very well that all they had to do was show up for class and cash in on an "A" for the project without so much as lifting a bloody f-ing finger for it...

A question, if it was a 99 percent white school and the principal were to have the same kind of conversation with that black student, would it not be likely considered “Racism “ ? This is what I have noticed. I am a white guy who grew up in a mostly black school setting , so I can relate a bit . The most fundamental thing to do to influence people in a positive way regarding racism is to focus on what unites us .

Nice kids here at this school but the South always struck me as far , far too segregated -at least when I visited as a teenager . Idk about anyone else but I would love a all black school with black teachers. Don’t have to worry about judgment, stereotypes non caring white teachers etc. it’s probably a safer place and you don’t have to worry about your skin color being a reason you are judged. As soon as a white person comes in you start to feel immediately a certain way. Idk just my opinion. I don’t think we should be forcing them to be around us when they clearly don’t want to be around us and have negative views of us.

I see everyone accusing the teacher of racism here in the comments. How about we take race out of the equation here for a moment. There could be at least two possibilities why the teacher didn’t stop the white girl from hitting the Muslim girl, one being the teacher could’ve been out of the room and two being it could’ve been a teacher of another class and she walked by seeing that the door was open and the fight going on (that being she walked in at the wrong time). Now if the teacher was in there, it’s possible this that this teacher was on her phone or laptop possibly wearing headphones which is imo unprofessional. The problem here is you all are assuming and doing your best to gather your information off of a 20 second video to accuse the teacher and even the whites girl being racist. The actions of that white girl were extremely unnecessary and uncalled for, but once again all of you and including myself do not know the whole story. What if the Muslim girl did something first? What if she hit her threw something at her bullied her? The black girl stepped in at the right time and she had guts to do so but my point is, we all need to stop using the R word every chance we get. Analyze and research the full story before bringing in race…
