Most KZbin videos I could find focus on the viaduct or Harry Potter, so in today's video I walk right past it (literally) to see what else Glenfinnan has to offer. Enjoy the video...

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is both my business model and a result of doing everything myself. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips! But more than anything else, it's about budgets. I generally need to film a number of videos on each trip to break even. And each one of these take a while to fall into place on a Saturday morning.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.

It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!

I agree with you 100% about the lack of 'something special' with the West Highland trains. The Settle-Carlisle railway also has visitors from around the world, and the trains have volunteers selling souvenirs on board. We have bog-standard trolley food, but nothing to make it stand out as memorable. It is one of the great railway journeys of the world, and Scotrail could be adding so much value to the trip. And hey, good job you ate *after* squeezing through that hatch.

While tourism is big on the line it's also still a working railway getting people to and from Glasgow. The Sprinters though really are not right; I was on them in the mid 90s in that route and they really need to replaced with something newer. No chance of Scotrail doing that though.

I would pay extra for something like an observation car on incredible routes like this. Not a fan of Amtrak here in the US but something like that on the West Highland line would be fabulous.

Hi, Steve. First went on this journey in 1974. Believe it or not we were asked to sign a petition to keep this line as BR, as it was then, wanted to close it down. Rannoch Moor and Glen Coe ar part of my favouritist, great new word, places in whole world. In 2012 my son-in-law and I walked across the moor on the West Highland Way, then 2013 we completed the Scottish coast to coast by walking the Great Glen Way. I have been to the highlands more times than I can remember and they never fail to raise my heart. Thanks for the memories Steve ❤❤

We stayed in a cottage in Glenfinnan 6 years ago with our husky Shaer and Malamute Talon. They are sadly both gone now. When we stayed there was a maot around the monument. The walks off the path to the monument is a lovely evening walk. The dogs and I did it a couple of evenings. The road under the viaduct is the start of a lovely walk though forests and steep trails. I had been to Glenfinnan many times as a child but never crossed the viaduct by train. We took a day trip to the lovely sands and Mallaig. My partner went back in the car and the dogs and I caught the train you got back to Fort William, it was a fantastic journey with stunning views.

Fabulous day out Steve! I felt I was right there along with you. Have to say, I loved that proud Scot look on your face as you stood at the bottom of the wee church looking over Loch Shiel. The absolute magical beauty of it all. A look of recognition of why our ancestors fought and died to keep it that way. As a fellow Scot myself, I felt and understood that completely. Glenfinnan, yeah, I'd say it's my favourite part of Highland Scotland. The views out over the Loch, the monument, the wee church and yeah, even the viaduct with the steam train. All Scotland. Took my wife here on her first visit to Scotland about 33 years ago in March. She was overawed at the west coast line........as was I, it was my first time on that side of Scotland. Went to morar/Arisaig every summer for 2 weeks with the family growing up from 1983 -2000. Absolutely has the best beaches in the uk when the sunshine out 😅. When it's wet, that's another story, but I remember it before all the crowds found out about it. (Thanks Harry)

A good day out Steve. Out tour last year we enjoyed the West Highland Line to Fort William by train where we spent a couple of days, then we took the train from Fort William to Mallaig, then by coach up to Inverness. With a couple of days in Inverness we enjoy a train journey on the Kyle Line, while I had waited some ten years to travel on the West Highland Line I was equally impressed with the scenery on the Kyle Line. Another fun video, many thanks. I climbed the Glenfinnan monument when I was younger and more sprightly! Getting on to the top platform certainly was a bit hairy. Don't remember having to book or pay an entrance fee at that time, though as we are members of the NTS, maybe it used to be included. Really Scottish weather, eh?

I'm not Scottish but know they have ski slopes as in Ireland all we have are artifical ones. I was envous of the Scottish growing up being able to ski without having to go abroad. Some people don't realise Australia has ski slopes.

I'm usually on the Oban train, but love the Ft William line too. That section at the horseshoe and Kinglass viaduct are spectacular, especially at the foot of Ben Dorain. Always worth it too seeing Corrour. Anyhoo, both sections of the West Highland line are stunning......and as in this video, there's so much more than HP and that concrete viaduct. The church is also awesome, all too often folk just stop to take the "grammer" pic, but it's nice inside too... as you've seen. Interesting history.

21:14 I remember back on a gorgeous Saturday in March 2005, after my girlfriend started getting trench feet out hillwalking around Knoydart and we bailed our hike and hitchhiked out of Kinloch Hourn to Fort William to spend a week in Achintee instead. When her feet were better, rather than continuing our hike, we just made some day trips around Fort William, and one of those days we ended up at Glenfinnan. There was literally nobody. What a fantastic journey Steve! Scotland at its best. The final destination Glenfinnan is just amazing. I was there in July -23, staying at The Armoury (filmed after the church) for five days, an accommodation I highly recommend. 😄👍

Fabulous video , have driven up and down that road many a time but you taking us on foot and by train was spectacular and I’ve seen the views in an entirely different perspective. Love the genuine friendship that has developed between you and Scott, brought a smile to my face seeing you meet up. Thanks again Steve , loved it.

I would highly recommend a night's stay at The Glenfinnan House Hotel! wonderful place with 18th century paintings, open fires, and a fabulous old fashioned bar and restaurant.

It was a beautiful view of the trip. Loved the little creeks and meadows so calming. The walk seemed like I was right there and could even feel the wind although it made me a bit dizzy. I could never have gone up those steps and out into the roof. Glad you did and took pics of the view.

Beautiful scenery I love Scotland
