Hello, next time you come here to Lake Como, come from Milano Centrale to Varenna, the central lake area Varenna-Menaggio-Bellagio is the most famous and popular. You can take a ferry ride around the lake and get off anywhere to explore... spring or autumn is best, summer very busy!
@davidbennetts6168 ай бұрын
Did that a few years ago. Stayed a couple of nights there in Varenna, and used a day pass on the ferries. Such a beautiful place. The station was on the hillside, a little steep on the road back up, but not too difficult.

Please can you tell me which train company you travelled with from central to varenna
@julienetherton59144 ай бұрын
Of course, Trenord is the company, from Milano Centrale through Lecco to Varenna, although the train will go on to Sondrio and Tirano, so that is what you want to look for on the board ..

Went to Como from Milan, beautiful place. We went on the lake boat trip, in March, stayed on the open top deck when everyone was undercover. I'm Scottish I can cope, "it's not really that cold" - The cough I started off with progressed to pneumonia, off work for 2 months. 14 years later I still don't feel I've fully recovered. Would love to go again, but I wouldn't be so foolish next time.

I can recommend taking the boat from Como to either Menaggio or Bellagio and taking the bus back. Particularly the bus ride is one which you will not forget easily. And if you have time you can visit some of the small towns or villages en route. Some great local markets (there's a folder about these at the Como tourist centre).

Spent a few days in Milan in Sept two years ago before heading to Como (seriously warm during the daytime and spectacular thunderstorms at night) to celebrate our anniversary - the 5 days in and around Como were quite incredible (accommodation was over €1k per night for 5-star, but worth it given the occasion) it's a beautiful area and the people fabulous. We love the Italian Swiss canton of Ticino on the otherside of the border with Locarno and Lugano. Both of which have great boat trips on lakes. If I remember correctly TILO is a joint Swiss / Italian company linking TIcino and LOmbardia hence the name. It is a regional service between Milano and Bellinzona.

They are beautiful, but I feel Iseo is a better choice for tourists with public transport. You can easily reach all the major village on the east coast of lake Iseo with a train from Brescia. Idro, on the other hand, it's a two and a half hours bus ride from Brescia, on a line with only 6 runs a day.

About that Tilo/Trenord confusion: TiLo is the operator of regional trains in Ticino and between Ticino and Lombardy, and is a joint venture between Trenord and SBB. The TiLo RE80 between Milano Centrale and Locarno is the fastest train between Milan and Como (even slightly faster than the EC) and is a perfectly normal regional train, also when it comes to tickets. Trains to Como Lago are a bit slower, just like the S11 from Garibaldi, but are super convenient to/from central Milan, as Milano Cadorna is located just next to the Sforza Castle. Anyway, to fully appreciate the beauty of the lake you better take the RE to Sondrio/Tirano and get off at Varenna (just 1h from Milan) and eventually get a ferry to Bellagio, Menaggio, Tremezzo, etc.
@javierpetrozzi8 ай бұрын
Beautiful Como! If you ever come back...Brunatte, through the funicular is really worth it, plenty of places to walk and find breathtaking views of the lake, is a half day ride, and if you like to navigate the lake, I suggest stops at Bellagio and Varenna, this navigation takes you the whole day, but is really worth it too.

In order to get to Como to the Como Nord Lago you need to depart from a third station, Cadorna (which is the most central, being just 10 minutes on foot from the Duomo). Also, from the west end of the lake front, there is the funicular to Brunate, a village just above Como. Next time check it out. FInally, TILO isn't a local operatior, it's a joint venture between the Italian and the Swiss operators.

Like a few others I would recommend the regional train to Sondrio/Tirano and get off at Varenna, which has cutesy back streets, a lovely ruined fort on the hill, and ferries to Bellagio and elsewhere. That’s where all the tourists were instead of Como! Or carry on the same train to Valtellina, which is a gorgeous valley close to the Swiss border, and ending up in Tirano for the connection to St Moritz and the Bernina Express. Book the Bernina train in advance if you want a scenic carriage. Or just go down to the bottom of Lake Como, to Colico, where there are far fewer international tourists so the atmosphere is much more Italian. I can feel approaching rain too - it’s the sudden drop in air pressure and less birdsong.
