This one was filmed in the fall, but it's actually another excellent summer activity in another amazing spot in Newfoundland: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpiyiHqCoap2bdE

The website says you'd need to place your picnic order at least a day in advance since it doesn't look like they're able to make the food onsite, but the menu sure looks lovely!

Ferryland is where a hero of mine lived under duress around 1750. He escaped from the British navy and lived in an area called the Butter Pot. He was known to be the leader of The Society of Masterless Men. He lived free into old age. We just finished a picnic near Brigus South, parked the car and walked to Turtle Island. Yes walked. One of the prettiest spots on the southern shore and 15 minutes closer to St. John’s

@@peters9459 I am vaguely familiar with this story. I’ll try to look it up to find out more about it. I’m also going to pay a visit to Turtle Island very soon. I didn’t know it existed until just a little while ago if you can believe that!

@@mark_royle_newfoundland An 85 year old catholic priest by the name of Father Peter set me straight with the understanding that to be Masterless back then was to be “ without mast “ . After the fish season and rather than being forced back to Ireland for the winter, just to have to return in the spring, he said ( I would think) “Hell No “ and stayed with a band of men, learning how to survive by the Beothuk Indians. The only way to travel back then was by boat, so to be masterless, was to be without a mast to get about

Very cool. Also, this has to be the most Peters ever included in a single comment thread!

Such a gorgeous experience! Just a side note for those with mobility issues who may have difficulty walking to the site, please contact the Lighthouse for information on rides from the parking area to the lighthouse itself.

A lovely walk even if you don't feel like you need a picnic. Check out the Avalon settlement archaeology.

I agree, Ferryland is great for many reasons. This is a pretty little walk even if you aren't in the mood for a picnic, and the archeological site is very interesting.

You would be running amiss if you didn't check out Greenspond at some point. Was a powerful community formally known as being the "capital of the north".
