Fun fact, English ‘decoy’ comes from Dutch eendenkooi. Wooden or tame ducks were used to lure wild ones into the eendenkooi. They didn’t realize that the ‘een’ part of the word wasn’t an article so they dropped it and thus ‘eendenkooi’ -> ‘decoy’ with the meaning of ‘an object to deceive’ (like the wooden/tame duck was)

Jura manufactures the best coffee machines in the world. We have one. But it takes a little effort: adding water, remove coffee residual and water and feed new beans. I would never recommend it for a hotel. Oh, and 'droge worst' comes over from all of Europe. Italian and Spanish ar among the best. Whenever you might visit Rotterdam and the Markthal again: there is a specialised store in 'droge worst'. Many flavours, and I think 3 for EUR 10.

Ameland is actually the most ‘reserved’ of the Waddeneilanden in terms of nudism. On Vlieland, for example, nudity is allowed on all beaches around the island (except for a small section between paal 50 and 51, which is directly in front of the beach hotel). Terschelling is also an island where nudity is allowed on all beaches. Although it is not always appreciated by tourists. But it is normal to see the local people take a skinny dip in the early morning, before work or school.

So nice to see you in Friesland again! If you ever visit Ameland again (which you should!), be sure to go towards the west. There are a few cute villages around there, like Hollum and Ballum. Each time I'm on the island, I visit Eeterij Tante A'n for the best apple pie with whipped cream. It's sooo delicious! I took some international friends there and they loved it as well. Just outside Hollum there is a tall lighthouse as well. The view from the top is amazing! On the northside of the island, where the dunes and beaches are located, there are a few very long bike routes from Hollum to Buren. This is also where you find a four beach pavilions as well. They can get crowded, but the views are great. This is all doable without an electric bike, it just takes a bit longer. Also, sorry for the bad weather all the time. Ameland is actually one of the sunniest places in the country, though it's quite a bit colder and more windy (as you know by now). The Wadden islands can have different weather conditions compared to mainland, even though they are so close.

Today I went to Ameland for a daytrip inspired by your video, as I saw the bridge over water and The Oerd. The last time I went was between 15 and 20 years ago when I was a student. I've been mostly to Schiermonnikoog with groups and 2 times alone to Borkum since. You didn't showed much of the bicycle path through the dunes on the North-part of Ameland. My main goal was cycling towards the Oerd and the bridge, but I already got overwhelmed by the path through the dunes. I thought: If this is already so beautiful, how beautiful must The Oerd be? It is very recommending. Did you cycled that path too? I walked also the 4km walk through the Oerd. Again I got overwhelmed by how beautiful it was. There where even more of those wooden bridges. 2 weeks earlier I came back from 2 weeks of cycling through the Balkan and that was very disappointing, mostly how it was organized, so this was a bit of a compensation. I thought: Why am I going all the way to the Balkan, if I can also just go within 2,5 hours to Ameland by bus and train? I even went to the same beach as you did. I was completely alone! Far, far away I saw some people, but that must be over a km away. The water was surprisingly warm. I just walked in without shivering. The weather was also much better than you had. It started cloudy, but it got sunnier during the day and around 20 degrees.

Still have fond memories even after almost 4 decades. Thank you Ameland, you made my childhood vacations awesome. there is a distinct lack of "Trapkarren" presence in your video. Are they gone? ) the "trapkar" is a steel kart/bike hybrid they are, or at least were, available in 2, 4, 6, or 8 people capacity. In your salad I see a silver onion, not an Amsterdam Onion. Silver onions and Amsterdam onions are made from the same type of onion but pickled differently. making the Amsterdam onions yellow (because one of the ingredients for them is safron) while the silver onions are white. Amsterdam onions also tend to have grown a bit longer making them a bit bigger. Just Google Amsterdamse Uien and you will see all pictures being of yellow onions.

The Jura cannot make real espresso (Italian style) but can make a mean lungo. Depending on the beans you feed it. The "flushing" is not to get rid of water but to remove stale coffee residuals from its pipes. You only need a tall cup under it to collect the shut-down flush and the start-up flush. I run serious barista kit at home but have lived with this machine's ancestor in the 1980s. It would "tamp" the grind and "pre-infuse" the dry puck. It needed preventive maintenance that made TCO high, though. Barista kit is not better at that, but can be much more expensive. For a hotel room, this is luxury indeed.

Cooool!!! I love Ameland. And I like your video about Ameland. One remark: in the beginning of the video you said that you were 'in Ameland'. In Dutch, when you are talking about an island, you use the preposition 'on/op'. So you should say that you are 'on Ameland', not in. You could say you are 'In Nes, Hollum, Buren or Ballum', but you are 'on Ameland'. This also applies to some places that used to be an island but aren't anymore, like the village of Urk. Urk is a village situated in the Noordoostpolder, one of the famous parts of land that were created by the Dutch ('God created earth, the Dutch created the Netherlands'). Urk used to be an island, but after claiming land from the Zuiderzee (now called the 'IJsselmeer') it became a coastal place and wasn't an island anymore. Nevertheless, people still say they live 'op/on Urk" rather than 'in Urk'. And there are more villages that have the preposition 'on' instead of 'in'. In the provinces Friesland and Groningen several villages were built on a hill, to withstand high water. In Friesland these hills are called a 'terp' and in Groningen these hills are called a 'wierde' In some of the names of Frisian and Groningen villages you can recognise these words. Living in a village that was built on a hill, made the inhabitants say they live 'on the village', rather than saying they live 'in the name of the village'. I'm sure this will not apply to all villages, so I am sure I will get reactions that will say I am wrong. But in several villages that were built on a hill against high water, the inhabitants said (and still say) they live "op(on) X".

Catfish is a fresh water fish - I would never expect that on Ameland. And so I would never order it when there. Note that the "fishy" smell that (dead) fish can have is a sign of decay. Up to a point that is not bad and can be masked by proper heating and some lemon juice, but beyond that point, ammonia starts to build in the dead fish tissue and this is easily recognisable. That ammonia would damage your mucous membranes if you ate it. Memories go back to two guys from a restaurant showing off the halibut of which they would prepare a piece for me. It was on a 1" wooden board and its size about 2'*3' at least. It didn't smell like fish and was perfectly fresh from the harbour. They cut up the entire fish for all the tables that night. I love fish, but have this sensitivity to be able to discern the stages of decay. My wife does not taste/smell it. Must be genetic.

Ameland has a very rich history. For a long time,Ameland took a special position in the Kingdom /republic of the Netherlands (sometimes the Netherlands were a kingdom, sometimes we were a republic). Ameland was a so called 'free lordship' in the Netherlands, let's call it a sovereign part of the Netherlands. Only in 1813 Ameland became part of (submitted to) the Netherlands, whereas the rest of the country united long before. This attitude to the central power still leaves its marks. The people of Ameland still have the mentality of being free and independent, even though they know they aren't anymore. The heart and the head. Up to and including 1988, the life guard boat of Ameland was transported by horses, also into the sea. Ameland was unique in this matter. It went wrong in 1979, when the life boat was launched into the sea and all the horses drowned by the launch. A horrible story that is remembered yearly on Ameland. The launch of the lifeboat by horses is a tourist event now. And to avoid the disaster of 1979 to happen again, the sea is inspected thoroughly before the horses are led into the sea. It's cool to sea and I recommend everyone who visits Ameland to go see it.

Haha i think you were brave to go naked on the beach in that weather, looked cold to me!

it was chilly with the wind but we had been riding those bikes directly into the strong winds down by the nassaukooi and we were exhausted 😅

We were there the same weekend! Feeling unlucky to not have seen you. 🫣 Hope you didn’t get too much rain and really enjoyed your stay on the island we love so much. 👍

we had a great time! were you there for the beach rugby tournament??

@@buncharted we visit the island with the whole family every year. I’m close to my 20th visit, but my family in law have been going 34 years in a row! 🫣 We just hang out and enjoy the island. We stay at a really old farmhouse in Buren (last house when you go to the Eendenkooi). Great that you enjoyed the island, ate the catfish, the droge worst from Dennis and had the mustard soup. Happy adventuring and discovering! 🤗👍

Slim vrouwke. Using jumbo zilveruitjes is better than the kesbeke ones. The shop brand is only sugar. Kesbeke uses artificial sweetener in EVERY product they make.
