This, right here, is probably the most powerful "name-it-and-claim-it" verse in the Bible.
Mark 11:23-24 (NASB95)
“Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him.
“Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.
Honestly, I really struggled in prep for this study. At first I found myself wanting to just make sure that this passage wasn't used for the kind of stuff Kenneth Copeland teaches.
But I sensed that, in my desire to avoid a particular interpretation, I might be blinding myself to what the passage is saying. So, I took a different approach, one that I try to always take but one that was particularly difficult for me to do this time around. I took myself out of the debate over "name-it-and-claim-it" teaching in the 21st century and instead sought to thoroughly understand how this radical passage makes sense in the context of Mark and the rest of the New Testament. The result has been a really rewarding study on the power of prayer and the reality of faith in the midst of suffering. This passage doesn't fit "name-it-and-claim-it" and it doesn't fit cessationism either. My hope is that I can bring clarity with this study and stir up faith. Faith for miracles and faith for suffering.

I took care of my husband for 15 years after he became disabled. I prayed and prayed for God to heal him and I was assured in my spirit that He would. Our twins were 6 weeks old when he became disabled. The doctor gave him a year. They were 14 years old when God totally healed him - by taking him home to heaven. I thank God every day for the miracle of 13 years that my boys had their dad. And even on the morning he died, I thanked God for taking him home and relieving his suffering. I told him that it was okay, he could go, and we would be okay. He took one more breath, and let go.

It was a statement of faith. I agree. But just to be clear, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego didn't just say that God could deliver them but that he will deliver them. "If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.” Daniel 3:17‭-‬18 They were right in the end. They had faith and believed that God will deliver them not just that he might deliver them. God bless.

Thank you Mike. I like the message. I think your right with regards 1 john w.r.t. abiding. My personal view is to be careful saying God told me (can't remember exactly phrase) it tends to make people think a voice in the head. I think as we abide, God changes our wills, desires, hearts. Phil 2 God works in us both to will and to do. These new desires line up with Gods will and hence as we pray these new desires God always answer positively as they were His will initially. We can also have faith that as we abide God will change our desire to be like His as He promised.

I had a conversation about that verse today at fellowship and I learnt about the context of their words to the king. I believe they emphatically said that God will save them . Even if the king changes his mind and not try to kill them they still wont bow. The furnace was super hot. The soldier that got too close died instantly. You cant bow in a fire that kills you instantly. They resolved not to bow, wether the king tries to kill them or not. They were firm in their conviction that they will be saved by God.

Umm NO that's not correct and also there is no difference between Faith and REAL Faith if you have faith then you have faith but christians commonly like to subdivide things and make 1 thing into many because they like to feel that THEY are doing the thing on top of the mountain (so to speak) and others are doing things BENEATH or at the bottom of the mountain and in turn they elevate themselves above others and in doing so they make themselves SPECIAL You obviously believe yourself to not just be OFF FAITH but OFF REAL FAITH dont' you ? and you wish that fact acknowledged but the problem is , this is not the gospel or teachings of Christ this is the gospel of Chrys

No and Copeland does not teach that. He might use the word of God once or twice where it said command me. Isaiah 45:11 but it does not mean twist his arm. Fasting does not move God towards you but you towards God. So sorry to say you both have it wrong and so does your pastor. But we can go boldly to the throne and ask God for help and expect it. I do it by praying maybe once or twice and not worrying about it anymore. Sometimes i thank him as if i already have it: A few years ago i was out of work and had been looking for almost a year. Then i saw how stupid i had been and stood in my living room saying thank you God for this new job. I like this job and do it well. The next day i got 3 job offers. When i wanted to move out of a apartment i thanked God for the house and brought furniture for it as if I had it already and a week or so later i had a house. I am glad of people like the Copelands and many others that teach me how to understand how the word works. many dont understand or when they listen they listen to hear mistakes only and miss it all together or they look at the person saying it and see nothing. I love what Benny Hinn said once. He said don't be concerned about me but concerned only about what i say about God.

I am a believer from a fundamental Baptist background. I grew up wanting to see the miraculous gifts described in scripture and being taught cessationism. We always believed God still did miracles, just through prayer and usually not in an undeniable manner so as to require faith even in the acknowledgement of answered prayer. I believe in healing through prayer. Sometimes it's a hard no from God and we have to accept his answer. I have a WOF friend at work. We have very different views on scripture and how to apply it. I feel like he thinks I'm a blasphemer or without real faith because I don't speak in tongues. I feel as if he has been raised in a culture that doesn't see their own hypocrisy and bad judgement over other christians because we don't fake it. I think they've been faking it so long they think it's real. I think there's so much self deception in the WOF movement they will feel more fellowship with Hindus who speak in tongues than with other christians who don't.

I think that it ultimately requires less faith to walk by sight, seeing the miraculous healing every service and ignoring the greatest miracle of salvation. The change in a man's heart when they're converted is so much more miraculous than a physical healing that ultimately ends in physical death. We're not called to take health and wealth to all the world, but the good news of salvation through Christ Jesus.

Why do people use Timothy’s stomach issue as an excuse to say it’s not Gods will they be healed?
@DM-nh8yb
@DM-nh8yb Жыл бұрын
The water could indeed have been the cause of Timothy's trouble given Paul's exhortation to not drink it. (Some translations say "Drink no longer only water" instead of "Drink no longer water," but this is an interpretation since the word only does not appear in the original Greek text.) I don't know whether this variety of wine was alcoholic or not; I'll let others debate that. However, he was assuredly not telling Timothy to go around all day with a buzz. Many places on the earth today are known to have bad water, and people often get sick when they travel there if they drink it. This is not a curse that comes on them for sinning. The water just happens to have certain microorganisms in it. Instead of telling people to drink up and believe God, better counsel would be: "Drink something other than water. If you drink this water, you'll have frequent health problems!" Why get sick and believe God for healing when you can avoid the sickness in the first place? Why have recurring health problems like Timothy did if they're avoidable through natural means? The last time I went to such a place, I just avoided the water.
@DM-nh8yb
@DM-nh8yb Жыл бұрын
Anyone using this verse "against" healing should note that Paul's advice to Timothy was explicitly so that Timothy would be healed. Paul did not say that Timothy's "often infirmities" were his cross to bear and that he should accept them. As always, Paul's view on illness was that it was something to be avoided, not accepted. This should be your view as well. Acts 27:33-34 shows us another case where Paul gave people natural advice for their health. The objector usually adds something about how Paul didn't tell Timothy to "stand in faith" for his stomach. Paul did tell Timothy to follow after faith (1 Tim 6:11), to "fight the good fight of faith" (1 Tim 6:12) and to "hold faith" (1 Tim 1:19). He was exhorted to be an example in faith (1 Tim 4:12). He stressed the importance of "unfeigned faith" (1 Tim 1:5), avoiding foolishness that was not the godly edifying which is in faith (1 Tim 1:4), and that men were to pray without doubting (1 Tim 2:8)! Think about it -- today, many use this one stomach verse to justify praying while doubting -- doubting God's willingness to answer the petition for healing, figuring that in his sovereignty, God may make an exception like he supposedly did for Timothy! Funny, that's NOT how Paul told Timothy that prayer should be done! Of course, since the faith exhortations were not in the context of Timothy's stomach, some people will consider them irrelevant to the subject. But actually, there is no real context to the verse about Timothy's stomach. The surrounding verses are totally unrelated. Since Timothy was in church leadership, he was obligated to pray for the sick himself (James 5:14-16) since he would be in the class of "elder" described by James. God did not have one standard for Timothy's church and another for other churches, so Timothy had to believe in and practice the laying on of hands for healing himself.

I miscarried in July. I haven't been able to get pregnant since. When I miscarried, all I could do was pray for God to give me peace and acceptance that surpassed my understanding. I also prayed that God would never let me get pregnant again before allowing me to again experience the hope shattering grief of another miscarriage. I don't know if I'll ever be blessed with a child, but I've been feeling more and more that I won't be. Recently, I was praying before reading the bible, and prayed for a child. Then I read my planned chapter for the day - I'm reading the new testament in order chapter by chapter so it just happened to be the day for Galatians 4. Verse 27 hit me like a ton of bricks: "Rejoice, childless woman, who does not give birth. Burst into song and shout, you who are not in labor, for the children of the desolate are many, more numerous than those of the woman who has a husband." Since then, I have been wondering if God was answering me - telling me that while I would not bear children of my own, I would be a mother to many desolate children. This has led me to wonder even more seriously about adoption. How do I know if this is God's will for my life or just a coincidence? The emotional appeal is hard to ignore and I can never tell if I'm reading what I want to at times like this or if this is the spirit of God working within me.

Dear Pastor Mike.. I cannot even begin to express how the first 25 minutes of this video has liberated me from a long standing struggle that I've had in my relationship with the Lord. I would always become incredibly discouraged whenever I didn't get what I thought the Lord was supposed to do. I thought that I was being such a good Christian and everything was unfair. I would think that I'm not saved because I didn't believe hard enough. I tried to justify why I am a good recipient for the works of God, when it's the exact opposite. There is no righteousness in me, and inspite of that He does it anyway. I am not owed anything, yet He gives me life anyway.😭

I too spent some time in that camp and found no fruit (except that I memorized a bunch of scripture which is good). The problem? We forget that everything we receive is because of Jesus, not us. But We look for steps and formulas and they then become idols, because those formulas did not come from God into our heart (psalm 121 I look to the hills, from whence comes my help??? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of Heaven and earth).Now, if we ask God for His strategy for us, and He says to confess the Word, it is no longer a formula we are using to try to get God to do something but now becomes an act of obedience to the Lord’s instruction. Jesus healed people in various ways when He was on earth. He never changes so why would He only heal when we do one certain thing now? (Constant confession of the word and attempts to have enough faith -faith is an inside job anyway)The Lord knows what we need (like heart work) that will open the door for healing. And I believe he will give us the strategy of Heaven for our particular situation. Jesus never denied anyone their healing and He said “if you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the Father.” Hebrews 1 tells us He is the EXACT REPRESENTATION of God’s nature. He is the Lord He changes not. With Him there is no variation or shadow of turning. I think our biggest problems are: trying to find formulas for healing (including submission to the idea of a “if it’s His will” -remember what Jesus said to the leper who didn’t question Christ’s ABILITY to heal but rather His willingness. Jesus answered “I Will”.) so we look for formulas instead of His face, which then makes those formulas idols and 2) we (in the words of a wonderful Christian counselor) we let the seen (our experiences) judge the unseen instead of having the unseen judge the seen.

Well - if that's the case our prayers must just be whatever You decide Lord - disregarding my desires on the matter - as if the woman with the issue of blood touching Jesus' hem was ignorantly trying her luck (so to speak) - But rather in demonstrating that our strong desire to be healed and persuasion to touch God - will tip the scales for us and be dealt with by God (ask and you will receive) - will be dealt with by Jesus Christ - demonstrating God's will and infusing an absolute spirit of persuasion in this matter to take hold of - holding fast (Katalambano - 1 Cro.9:24, Rom.9:30, Phil.3:12 - to apprehend, catch it and obtain it; to make it ours) hence the confidence (our partaking of Christ with all promises and benefits a YES and Amen) and the rejoicing (not the wavering concerning promises) - but the rejoicing because met and dealt with through Jesus Christ for us - that rejoicing of the hope (joyful expectation for the here and now) - firm to the end ( the end? - well until Christ returns - also see 1 Thes.5:23 - God Keeps us entirely preserves us Himself - spirit soul and body Perfectly and entirely (Holokleros and Holoteleios - without lack or malfunctioning parts) (Heb.3:6 &14) - or the centurion (Luk.7:1-10) asking Jesus just to speak "a word" for his dying slave and he will be healed back at home (What kind of Faith are we talking about here - AMAZING!- Amen) - HENCE commended by our Lord as one not even EXPERIENCED amongst his own Jewish people - has He seen such a measure of faith - SUCH GREAT FAITH - that is PROFOUND - HALLELUJAH!!!!!! And what about Psa.37:4 - Delight yourself also in the Lord and He SHALL GIVE YOU THE DESIRES OF YOUR HEART (THAT IS YOUR DESIRES MET - (But with the above argument of weak faith UNFORTUNATELY - completely nullified by sowing doubt - God was never seen in the bible being praised for leaving anyone sick in His wake) - So found lacking if I consider weak faith's argument/reasoning and commenting negatively on the word of Faith movement To pray every time in doubt concerning God's testament (God's will) is like a person who inherited much but carries on living poorly and deprived of blessings - because they are not claiming their inheritance - Take note - The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it (Prov. 10:22) (rich in every way - but without faith will be found wanting in every area/aspect of life - do not listen to anyone who tries to define that riches because of their lack of understanding or experiences - but blessings are even seen in Jacob, Abraham, Isac's cases or even Psa.1 - like a tree planted by streams of water - that gives its fruit in its season and whatever you do - whatever he does - WILL PROSPER) Hence - to reason against what atonement has established will not suffice - and is not what God's word concludes - But rather - Whatsoever you ask in My (Jesus's) Name (Jn.14:13) should not be in question and make us waver - or turn away from such verses I say - No! - the prayer OF faith will give results effectively (SUBJECTIVE GENITIVE - MEANING GOD'S FAITH INSIDE OF US AS PART OF THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT - Christ in us the Hope of Glory - or then the Holy Spirit's indwelling will bring fruition via faith even for healing according to His will demonstrated on earth. - but we need patience (Hupomeno - undercarriage) (Mark.4:26-27 - with faith and patience we will inherit - imitate those who inherit for results - Heb.6:12) for the proving of our faith (James 1:2-4) after its perfect work - doing its PERFECT work in our abiding in steadfast faith - will bestow our petition - so that we LACK NOTHING - perfect (Teleios - Consumated - brought to fruition; sufficiently provided for) and complete (Pleroo - nothing can be added; satisfied and filled) - hence lacking nothing (meaning after the testing found that we kept the persuasion and assurance and then providing our petition (1 Jn.5:14 - So with Parrhesia/Boldness (This is the confidence, full assurance of faith that we HAVE IN HIM without wavering or doubting) that if we ASK ANYTHING (ANY THING MEANS ANYTHING WE NEED at that moment in time - MONEY TO PAY THE BILLS, HEALING FOR OUR BODIES, CLOTHES, FOOD, GAS, AND ALL THE OTHER THING THE GENTILES SO DESPERATLY seek - Matt.6:32 - but not to worry about it - RATHER BEHOLD - Matt.6:25 - To learn the lesson of looking at the birds of the air - in order to conclude that God will provide if we believe it. Hence - to inherit the promises by imitating those of God kind of faith to receive our promises (In Christ we are Blessed) - Heb.6:12 (especially healing - as part of the atonement - Period - not open for debate) - Any reasoning that causes us to waver concerning healing that throws out the baby with the bath water (so to speak) and causes that same old dealt with uncertainty and doubt concerning God's will (so clearly demonstrated and addressed by Jesus Christ's earthy walk) and needs to be refuted and pulled down any doubtful stronghold (of doublemindedness) with mighty weapons of God unto the obedience of Christ (which is the correct knowledge of God - Epiginosko - experiential knowledge through our union with Christ and therefore becomes powerful knowledge through the cross - 1 Cor.1:18) If we could ask the blind man who was healed in the temple (a man of stature - Helikia - finding himself in the ripeness and healing wrought through Christ) who then became bold through witnessing even to the doubtful Pharisees - (Jn.9:27 - meaning - that Jesus's ministry even taught and demonstrated healing (because he guarantees it via His atonement (Matt.8:17 - He HIMSELF (TAKE NOTE NOT US - BUT JESUS HIMSELF) TOOK OUR INFIRMITIES AND BORE OUR SICKNESSES Hence - persuaded everyone not to stand puzzled or remain doubtful about this tremendous need unmet worldwide) - Jesus brought our healing forth through His atoning work and put it in place (in full assurance of faith) otherwise (if doubleminded) - will cancel your prayer and leave you without receiving anything James 1:7

You have possibly no idea of what this teaching meant to me today. I have struggled so long. SO LONG as a woman who loves God. I have been healed. I've had words spoken to me by the Holy Spirit, I've seen miracles. Then, my daughter died. Then my husband divorced me. I lost my home, I lost another daughter. I spent countless seas of tears. I've been told my faith wasn't strong enough. I thought maybe I was being punished for sin. I used to go to work everyday in tears on my drive and I would begin singing, determined to lift my voice to the Lord. I lived with such sorrow. I came to the place that I agreed with Job, "the Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord" and, "though He slay me, yet I will trust Him". But in all of it, I always knew that Jesus was so close to me. I didn't have answers, until today. I'm crying as I type this. Thank you for helping me to see what I could not for so long

Thank you for this. I have struggled with multiple autoimmune disorders and severe disability for over a decade, and my faith in God has thankfully stayed strong even though my faith in churches and many Christians has greatly faltered because too many of them embrace this toxic belief that all who pray for healing should be healed unless they lack “enough faith”… meaning I’m somehow failing God and that is why I am still sick in their minds. It’s like these people forget that we live in a world tainted by sin, and we have corruptible bodies that can be harmed by the things in this fallen world (like pollution, contaminants, carcinogens, radiation, super viruses, etc). All personal illnesses are not judgements or faith challenges from God, and we are not promised guaranteed healing or perfect protection, God is not a genie at our disposal. You are absolutely right that to expect that kind of “use/command/control” over God is no different than witchcraft. God’s mercy is His to distribute, not ours to demand.

Pastor Winger, I agree with you. The WOF concept of this was only a little familiar to me, until I moved to a new area, and rented a room from a woman who kept Kenneth Copeland on the TV all the time. Believing she was a misguided Christian, I treated her as a sister in Christ. One evening I asked her to help me pray for a certain situation, but she suddenly jumped up angrily and shouted, “You’ve got to figure out how this works! God’s hand are TIED until YOU SPEAK IT!!” I wasn’t prepared for this. I countered with verses about God’s sovereignty, His omnipotence, and His will, even the Lord’s Prayer, all of which she scoffed at. This lead to my diligent searching of Scripture. I moved from her home soon after this. And God answered my request about that earlier situation with an amazing repentance and healing of addiction. He IS all powerful, and merciful. I do not control Him!

Thank you for this teaching. I recently lost my son after a long battle. Many people were telling me to rebuke it and while I had zero doubt that G-d could have healed my son despite all medical information to the contrary I also had a heart that maybe that wasn't his will. My name it and claim it friends insisted that G-d always wants good health and happiness for all his children. When I finally lost my son this weighed on me as a personal failure on my part. I wasn't strong enough or intentional enough to rebuke it in time. G-d is sovereign has been my mantra and comfort at this time and your teaching helps me to affirm that G-d's hand is not subject to my shortcomings. Thank you.

This is something I've had many discussions with people about. Sometimes, it isn't in God's plan to heal someone. Paul spoke on this when he referred to the "thorn in the flesh." We don't know what he was afflicted with, he never tells us, but we do know that he asked God to heal him, and God told him no, that His grace was sufficient. We may not always know the reason that things happen the way they do, and sometimes it's a terrible thing that's ongoing. But I'm still convinced there's a reason that things happen the way they do, even if we can't see it for a very long time

I'm someone who happens to believe that healing and wholeness is provided through the finished work of Christ. I became so persuaded of this that I've been trusting the Lord for my health, solely, for almost the past decade now. When I say solely, I mean it. Have I had challenges? Sure. Believing in healing and learning to walk in it doesn't mean there won't be challenges. It's not any different than maturing in your new identity as a born-again believer. But I can tell you that I've been healed of everything that came my way and have experienced years of freedom from sickness in general. I'm not saying it's always been easy and the healing wasn't instant in most cases. But the Lord has been faithful. So that's my testimony. It's a long story on how I came to make this decision and it's not one I made lightly. But I was convinced. Simple as that. Besides if I can trust God with my eternity, I don't see why I can't also trust him for a temporal need like my health. But I think our beliefs is the biggest factor ultimately. Just my two cents.

Lon that is not accurate. Jesus said that the Father knows what we need BEFORE we ask but in Luke 18 verse 1 it says “Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart,” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭18:1‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ Scripture say that Jesus said we ought ALWAYS to pray. And then gives a parable about a woman continually asking a judge for justice, and this parallels the parable with how we are to have persistence in prayer and how we are to be dependent on the Father. “Cry out day and night to Him”.

Lon that’s interesting because Paul says “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;” ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭4:2‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ We don’t have be earnest and vigilant to breathe, but we do in prayer. Prayer requires intentionality to set your mind on the things above. Breathing is instinctive, and requires no intentionality.

Hey my brother, I hope I might encourage you if I can. I have been healed several times, but I had to work my way up to it a little at a time.i didn't just decide on day to believe. Believing is not a mind thing. It's a heart thing, or spirit if you will. I began by healing a simple fever or flu which would normally take a week to suffer through and I went from 3 or 4 colds a year to none a year. That built my faith to be healed from arthritis. I don't really know if I had more faith, or if it was less doubt. You see, doubt will spoil perfectly good faith every time because it is being double minded. In Mt. 17:20, Jesus upbraids the disciples for their unbelief. James said a double minded man can receive nothing from the Lord. So we need to conquer doubt, and that can take a lot of work. If we could really believe with no doubting we would be seriously dangerous. However, and this may shock most church folk, I don't pray and ask God for healing because I already know it's His will. I use my covenant authority to command healing! You see, Jesus didn't say to pray and ask God to move your mountain, but He said to speak to the mountain and not to God! So I speak to my condition and I curse it and command it to go in Jesus name. I also talk back to the devil and laugh at him and tell him that Jesus has won the victory. I tell him he's a loser and to go back to hell, because it's not working, because there's a new sheriff in town! I was determined to be healed from pneumonia and by morning it was gone. I don't let the devil win! However, I had to learn from a good teacher. I have been listening to Andrew Wommack for almost 20 years. Hope this helps.

I'm all over KZbin testifying that God still heals. But I'm also aware that healing is not his main purpose, salvation is. Two examples: 1. When Mark chapter 2 with the man sick of the palsy, Jesus said unto him "Son thy sins be fotgiven thee." Everyone looks at him like what do you mean your sinsbe forgiven thee? He came for healing and you forgive his sins as if you're God? Jesus response was Ok just so you know I have the authority to forgive sins, I say to the sick of the palsy "Arise, take up your bed, and go thy way.' Example 2. John 5, Jesus arrives at the pool of Bethesda. John makes a point that there was a great multitude of sick people; blind, lame paralyzed. Jesus healed one man and verse 13 indicates that after he healed the one man he moved away. When the Pharisees caught up with him, Jesus said in verse 35 that he came to finish a mission. The miracles he did were merely proof that he was sent by God the Father.

If it is fair to blame Paul for Trophimus not walking in the light of his healing, we must also blame Paul for the failures of Demas and John Mark to continue with him in the ministry. Neither is fair to Paul. We don't have authority over human wills, and neither did Paul. It is no more reasonable to say that God wanted Trophimus sick for some reason than to say that God wanted Demas to forsake Paul for some reason. No one can prove that Trophimus stayed sick a long time, either. This is truly a paper-thin verse on which to build an anti-healing doctrine. Yet people build a castle on this verse. "Paul had a healing ministry but couldn't heal Trophimus!" Watch out! Paul's Lord could not heal the sick at Nazareth, either. This proves nothing other the people's unbelief, which is stated as the reason for their failure to receive healing. The fact that Jesus left many sick at Nazareth does not prove that God wanted them sick and was unwilling to heal them supernaturally. Therefore, the fact that Paul left Trophimus sick at Miletum does not prove that God wanted Trophimus sick and was unwilling to heal him supernaturally. It is also possible that Paul prayed for Trophimus and that Trophimus followed Jesus' instructions to "believe that he received" when he prayed, but his healing had not yet manifested in his body, just as the tree that Jesus cursed did not appear dead on the outside right away. We can't prove whether or not this is true. The eight words about Trophimus's condition are not enough to prove anything. Why build a doctrine on one exceptional case, where we are never told why the man was sick, or if he remained that way? Wouldn't it make more sense to build a doctrine on the rule rather than the exception? Rather than groping for some silly excuse to stay sick, build your doctrine on the crowds of people in the New Testament who were healed and the statements made by the Lord and his disciples under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit! No Scripture says that you cannot be healed, but plenty of them that say that you can be healed. Base your doctrine and your believing on them!

It was difficult enough to wrestle through all the doctors before MRI's were available, before they could see what was happening with my spine. Vertebrae growing closed in neck and low back, herniated and missing discs, and notable alignment issues caused by genetic issues of an over curved back. I still had to try to work and function to raise my family like that - single working mom of 4. I was as active in my church and community as I could be, taught Sunday School for decades, etc. and was accepted as a deaconess in my church, yet told I had insufficient faith. God has spared me from harm from a heart attack, He brought me out of having flatlined during surgery, brought me through 26 surgeries, but won't heal me. Sounds rather strange doesn't it. My kids are grown with families of their own, and having been overtaxed in trying to help me as much as possible over these last 5yrs where I've had more than 10 surgeries, that their faith is struggling too, and I'm a burden to them- keeping their distance and seemingly losing respect for me. My family was once close and active...very sad. I don't ask God where He is, as He's always with me. However, not unlike Joni Erickson Tada, I long for healing, not just of my body anymore, but of my family and finances as well. He's with me always, I couldn't possibly endure all this without Him. This last spinal surgery was the single most painful experience of my life, leaving me not knowing which way to pray, for Him to take me, or help me live. Yes, I get professional help for trauma and depression. I'm alone in an apartment after having been a homeowner for decades, these past 5 yrs...I don't pray to be healed as I used to, I pray God grant me "what it takes", to be a good and faithful servant to Him, and to bring glory to Him and His Name. Just thought I'd share my story with you. BTW, I turned 61 over the Winter, don't look my age nor the part of a spinal surgical patient, I'm told I look like a lovely 45yr old....

It's so hard to teach a lesson on the value of suffering. Nobody wants to hear that these days, but there's so much value available for God to mold and shape us and our character when we have to go through tough stuff! Thank you, Pastor Mike, for being brave, for being thorough, and really studying the topic in great depth before presenting it to us. Know that you are covered in prayer as you present truth in the face of an oppositional culture. May the Lord continue to give you (and the rest of us believers, too) wisdom!

This thorn in the flesh that Paul mentioned has been used and misused by Christians to justify submitting to nearly any problem that comes along. Satan has twisted this passage of Scripture to deceive many, many people into believing that God would not heal Paul, so how can they expect to be healed? Let us examine this closely and find out exactly what Paul’s thorn in the flesh was. First of all, this “thorn” came because of the abundance of revelations Paul had received. Until a person has an abundance of revelations, similar to what Paul had, he is not going to have a “thorn.” That would disqualify just about all of those who have been hiding behind Paul’s thorn. Then, verse 7 says it came lest Paul should be exalted above measure. Traditionally, that has been interpreted to say the thorn was to keep Paul humble. Therefore, God had to be the author of it, because only God would want Paul to be humble. But there is a godly way of being exalted. First Peter 5:6 says, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” Those who submit (humble) themselves to God will be exalted by God. Paul was not speaking of exalting himself above measure through pride, but rather, the thorn came from Satan to keep Paul from being exalted by God in the eyes of the people. Many more people would have received what Paul preached if everything was always “rosy” for him. But there was this messenger of Satan who always buffeted Paul and scared away the faint-hearted from committing themselves to Jesus, whom Paul preached. God magnified, or exalted, Joshua in the sight of his people (Josh. 3:7). He continued to do that with the people He used on into the new covenant (Acts 5:13). So, we see that the exalting spoken of is not a negative kind but a godly kind. That just further strengthens the fact that the thorn was not God’s doing. In verse 7, right after the thorn in the flesh is mentioned, there is a phrase set off by commas which says, “The messenger of Satan to buffet me.” This is an explanation of what the thorn was. It was not a thing but rather a demonic messenger. The word used as “messenger” here is always translated as angel or messenger and refers to a created being. So, Paul’s thorn was literally a demon sent from Satan to buffet him. The word “buffet” means to strike repeatedly as waves would buffet the shore. How did this demonic force continually strike Paul? Traditionally it has been taught that it was with sickness, and the thing that made many accept that is the use of the words “weakness” and “infirmity” in verses 9 and 10. Infirmity definitely does mean sickness and is used that way in 1 Timothy 5:23, but that is not the only meaning of the word. The number two definition is any lack or inadequacy. For instance, Romans 8:26 says, “the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities.” In this case, the context makes it clear that it is not speaking of sicknesses but rather not knowing what to pray for. Our finite minds are an infirmity, or an inadequacy. If we look at the context of Paul’s thorn in the flesh, we find that infirmity does not mean sickness in 2 Corinthians 12:9 and 10. In 2 Corinthians 11:30, Paul uses the exact terminology of “glorying in infirmities” that is used just a few verses later in speaking about this thorn. In the eleventh chapter he had just finished listing what those infirmities were. In verses 23-29, he lists such things as imprisonment, stripes, shipwrecks, and stonings; none of these speak of sickness. Verse 27 mentions weakness and painfulness, which some have tried to make mean sickness, but it is just as possible he could have been weary and suffered painfulness from such things as being stoned and left for dead (Acts 14:19). All these things listed in 2 Corinthians 11 refer to persecutions as infirmities. So, in context, Paul’s thorn was a demonic angel or messenger sent by Satan which continually stirred up persecution against him. This is also verified by three Old Testament references (Num. 33:55; Josh. 23:13 and Judg. 2:3), where people are spoken of as being “thorns in your sides” and “thorns in your eyes.” Paul asked the Lord to remove persecution from him, not sickness, and the Lord told him His grace was sufficient. We are not redeemed from persecution, and Paul later stated that when he said in 2 Timothy 3:12, “All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” Most gladly, therefore, he gloried in persecutions, reproaches, necessities, and distresses that the power of Christ might rest upon him (2 Cor. 12:9). The word “glory” is an old English word which means to have dominion over or command. It is used in Exodus 8:9 where Moses told Pharaoh to glory over him, or command him, when to destroy the frogs. So when Paul spoke of glorying in these infirmities or persecutions, he was speaking of victory even in the midst of continual harassment. In Acts 14:19, Paul was stoned and left for dead, but God raised him up, and the next day he walked at least twenty miles into the next town and started preaching again. The Lord did not stop the persecution, but God’s strength was certainly made perfect in Paul’s weakness (verse 9). Can you imagine what those that stoned him must have thought? They could see Paul’s humanity in the cuts and bruises, but they could also see the supernatural strength of God flowing through him. “For when I am weak, then am I strong” (verse 10). There are two other passages of Scripture that those who believe Paul’s thorn in the flesh was sickness have tried to use to verify that. One is Galatians 4:13-15. Here Paul says that he preached the Gospel to these Galatians through an infirmity of the flesh, and in verse 15, he makes reference to these people being willing to poke out their own eyes and give them to him. From this, I have heard ministers preach that Paul’s thorn was a rare, ancient disease which was characterized by runny, puffy eyes. But let us look at whom Paul was speaking to when he said this. He was writing to the people who lived in the region known as Galatia, which had as its major cities, Derbe, Lystra, and Iconium. The instance we mentioned earlier, where Paul was stoned and left for dead, happened in Lystra, a city of Galatia. The next day Paul walked to Derbe, another city of Galatia, and began preaching unto them. I’m sure he had runny, puffy eyes, along with multiple cuts and bruises, but they were not the result of some disease. They were the result of having just been stoned. He also says in verse 13 that his infirmity was “at the first,” which leaves the impression it was only a temporary thing that he recovered from. The next scripture used to say Paul’s thorn was bad eyes is also in Galatians, chapter 6, verse 11. It says, “Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand.” People have said Paul’s eyes were so bad that he had to write in large letters, and this is what he was making reference to. That is only a supposition and not a very good one at that. It is a lot more credible to believe that he was simply referring to the long letter he had written to the Galatians. The reason it is so important to realize that the thorn in the flesh was not something which Jesus died to redeem us from, such as sickness, is so that we won’t submit ourselves to these things. James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” We have to resist, or actively fight against, the devil and the things he brings, to see them flee. Satan has used traditional teaching about Paul’s thorn to bring many Christians to a place of submitting to him. But, praise God, you shall know the truth and the truth, shall set you free.

This video helps me keep perspective. My hope is for my remission to be evidence of a cure. But there's always that anxiety in the back of my mind when I see others who've had their cancer return. This video helps me to remember to sit back and trust in God no matter what. His will. Not mine. In all things. It's a hard thing to do, for me at least, the anxiety queen...I worry about things I've seen with my own eyes. Lol. But thank you for the reminder.

I completely agree, “don’t isolate, reconciliate”. The hardest and most grieving part is when other side chooses to make reconciliation impossible. It takes two and it also requires humility and change in order for many to be able to reconcile. Yes, this social media lifestyle has taught our children the lack of true relationship. Kept mine from it for as long as I was humanly possible. Now it is out of my control. 😢 I will say that what you said regarding the LORDs Will is absolutely spot on. We do the will of the LORD whether the mountains move or we are called to suffer. I know more suffering than the “removal of the cup”. He has chosen to keep the cup upon me, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. I have always responded to the ones who say “God wills for all to heal and have no sickness or suffering”, then I point to the first century church who suffered IMMENSELY! They were murdered in colosseums in droves! Was their faith weak? Did they lack the faith to “move the mountains” and escape their captors? May it never be! My prayer over the past 15 plus years has been for people to start looking at the actual suffering of those who are in the LORD...you can really just start with our LORD! Yet, every prophet, Job, David, all the apostles, and the first century believers would all rebuke this “Word of Faith” teaching with a resounding, “get behind me Satan!”. So grateful to hear your response on faith for miracles too!! Yes, miracles occur. When we pray and have the confidence for the miraculous to occur then it’s INITIATED BY THE LORD! This doesn’t come from yourself!! I wanted to jump out of my chair when you said this. So many have fought me in this one too, but it’s what I also have always believed!!! Disclaimer, I have been the conduit in prayer for miracles to occur, and they have. It’s not because of me it’s all because it was the LORDs will for me to intercede and agree with the LORD and ware according to His command. AMEN BROTHER!!!! Just heard you say what I just wrote after I wrote it!! 😂 Lord bless you and your wife, Mike! Grateful to see your walk and hear your insights. I feel less alone and weird in the world!😊🙏🙌🏻

Super helpful. Growing up Lutheran, I had little experience with the gifts such as healing and prophecy but once exposed to it in my late teens I embraced them fully. I had an overwhelming encounter with Jesus in my bedroom in 2003 which emphasized Matthew 6:33. Soon I sold my dental practice mid career in order to better seek the Kingdom. Part of that journey led me to Pennsylvania for a year of study with Randy Clark including outreaches in the USA and abroad. There were days in which everyone l prayed for was physically as far as I could tell with an interpreter. Blind eyes, deaf ears, bad shoulders knees and backs,large tumors all healed in a few seconds or minutes. The thing was it was all God. For my part, I was just praying my simple prayers, believing as much as I could. Once I prayed for a friend to be healed of gall bladder problems, which he was even to this day. His comment while I was praying was to the effect of “ Is that it?” , like my prayer didn’t sound like much. Praise God. For our part, we need to be faithful to do what He tells us.

When I was diagnosed with Cancer in 2019, I could never pray for healing--it didn't seem like the right thing to do. It did not feel that I deserved it, nor did I lack faith that God could heal me. I truly believed it was God's will that I have Cancer. Two years later, when I found out that my Cancer was resistant to therapy and there was nothing else to do, I was completely unaffected by the news. The doctor was a bit surprised. When I listened to Mike's study it made total sense to me that God's intentions come to us in our desire to pray for something. In that context, of course, these prayers will always be answered because they are God's will and doing. It is so simple, it is complicated. Thank you, Mike, you are a blessing to me.

Faith is something we don’t earn! This is so powerful. It’s not about us producing faith or conjuring it. It’s trust. I have a couple times in my life prayed for something with faith that wasn’t my own. This was very helpful to me in understanding that faith is something that comes from God and not something that originated in me. I have people in my life who follow word of faith false teachers and I struggled with it myself. My focus was on me completely chasing what I wanted. I wasn’t focused on God for Him. Now I am. I will never go back to that way.

I know suffering is hard I have suffered like many others emotionally and physically. But Jesus has been so faithful to keep me strong when I was a young widow at 31 and then physical aliments for 12 years one thing after another and loss of parents. I have been healed 5 times but each one was a walk of faith and suffering after the Lords word to heal me which He did each time! Through it all He has helped me endure the suffering and look to Him. Thank you. This is so good and so helpful. Once I was praying for a man who had cancer. As I started to pray for him, words came out of my mouth that I wasn't expecting, and instead of praying for healing, I prayed for things like peace, joy, and opportunities to share the Gospel with his unsaved relatives. I was convinced that night that the Holy Spirit was directing my prayer and that God was telling me that He wasn't going to heal this man physically in this life. Later, I hesitantly shared this with a friend who told me that I was wrong, that it is always God's will to heal, and that I had listened to the voice of the enemy that night. As I have continued to study Scripture and have become more confident in sensing what is God's prompting and what is not, I have been more convinced that it was God's will that the man died at that time even though we couldn't understand. I have searched the Scriptures diligently to see how it is so clear to some that it is "always God's will to heal" us in the physical, in this life, and I haven't seen that, though I regularly ask God to show me anything that I have believed incorrectly. I want everything that God has for me, and I don't want to be misled or deceived in any direction. True, your conclusions resonate with mine, so I may like your teaching for that reason, but it's good to find someone who sees the same things in Scripture that I do, for example, that Jesus teaches us to pray surrendering our will to the Father's will. I grew up in a Baptist church, and there are so many good teachings that I have carried with me into adulthood, but I no longer identify myself as "a Baptist" and consider myself "charismatic" in the sense that I believe all of the Holy Spirit's gifts are operating today. I, however, don't fit better a Pentecostal church. I think I'm a Baptismatic. Ha! At any rate, all that matters is being true to Scripture as much as possible and course correcting when God points out a flaw in my understanding. Thank you for all of your teaching that is a help on that journey. And thanks for reading Scripture like I read Scripture. It makes me feel less weird.

I've lived with infertility for almost 16 years. The journey God has taken me on into trusting Him and not my healing has been profound. I still pray for healing and trust that God truly can move mountains but I also acknowledge His sovereignty and will for my life. What is He doing in my life? How is He refining my character? How is He using my faith as a witness to others? Where does suffering fit into His wider plan for His Kingdom? How does He want me to serve Him in the waiting? I may never answer some of these questions but I can honestly say I'm thankful for the journey. When Jesus says He will give us peace that surpasses all understanding, He means what He says. When He tells us to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, He shifts our perspective when we listen and trust Him. He has blessed me with a role in a Christian based pregnancy support centre. I love His ways. That He would use a barren woman to work for the cause of the unborn and their mother's..it wasn't in my plan to work there, but it certainly was His. I'm excited to see how He leads. I still believe I can become a mum one day, but if I never do, it's ok. He is doing amazing work in my life, He is refining my character, making me more patient and teaching me to trust Him and I would rather that than to have my prayers answered the way I want. He is good always. You've actually answered some questions I've had too. Thank you. Sometimes I feel like I have to make myself believe something and yet during other situations I'm filled with faith. Thank you for discerning those different times. This has helped to bring so much peace. May His will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Praise the Father for giving me a heart for His Kingdom and giving me a role in it. How wonderful! What a precious and beautiful calling.

I've long believed that if faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains, then it's clearly not the size of the faith, but where the faith is planted (in Christ) that determines the outcome.

The metaphor about the mustard seed is about the ability for faith to grow. If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, like the mustard seed you will tend to that faith, and water it, and it will grow until it becomes full, when it is full it will cause the power of God to manifest. This is what happened with the woman with the issue of blood, she heard about Jesus and His power to heal, and she cultivated her faith every day until the point when Jesus passed by, and that faith caused her to go out using all of her strength to make sure she was able to touch Him.

Thank you for helping me better understand the error and how to articulate the correct biblical interpretation of these verses to others in the future. God bless; keep fighting the good fight.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful exposition, Mike. This has helped me immensely as the word of faith doctrine has been a major point of unspoken strife in my local church. I totally believe in God's ability to heal and perform miracles today, but also wrestled with the outright denial that suffering can be within the will of God. I've also always greatly appreciated your gracious tone. It's such a contrast to other believers who disagree, but don't seem to care about RESTORING those who have fallen into error. Thank you, thank you, and thank GOD for His grace revealed in you and this ministry.

Let me give you part of my testimony. I have a type 6 shoulder separation I prayed and prayed got a no. Due to that no I got retraining today I'm a traveling missionary. Before this "No" I was a drunk and druggie. I prayed to be healed I thought I needed my shoulder healed so I could continue that life. Jesus healed my addiction 11 years clean and 8 years sober. The message I share argees with your teaching. I reach those whom are "MAD AT GOD" because a preacher lied. I share my story and show them the light of the real Good News

Absolutely biblical in depth message on this hard to understand topic of (Word Of Faith movement/Prosperity gospel/Triumphalism). Thank you, Mike. Two quotes I would describe this message: 1) 1:06:41 “I am only RESPONDING. He is INITIATING, I am responding”. 2) 1:20:01 "REAL FAITH IS A BELIEVING WHEN THE [God’s] ANSWER IS NO!" This is so fundamental and serious. This is what I have not learnt yet.

Such a great word “faith in suffering” is truely a hard lesson but super character building. I broke my back 8 years ago and have chronic pain and frustrating bladder and bowel issues, but I’ve learnt to leave it in God’s hands and even worship him through my pain at times! I do often worry that some people focus so much on the “hey God might not heal you” that it could impede faith inducing miracles, but I’ve also suffered through the frustrations of feeling like ‘I’ just needed to get my faith high enough, or the people praying needed to, and it is hard when we put that pressure in ourselves when as Mike has explained, it belongs with God.

Thank you thank you thank you. I’ve been seeking an answer to this question for 13 years, after becoming a member of a name-it-and-claim-it church when I was 16 and I began to grow angry with God for refusing to heal/answer certain prayers. I eventually rejected that theology but never had a good argument for why. In the last couple of years I’ve begun to follow Jesus more radically and have encountered great suffering. This helps me understand what is happening. I was just now standing in the kitchen listening to this message and started weeping (and surprised myself) when you prayed at the end. The Holy Spirit is most certainly speaking through your videos. Thank you

When I was in that cult this was taught as "Have faith in God or the God kind of faith" We were to taught to speak the same faith-filled words God spoke and our words would turn God into a divine concierge. A completely self-centered message that made ME into the I am. I am entitled. I am getting whatever I say. I am healthy. I am wealthy. I am indestructible. What heretical GARBAGE!

@Papa Smurf The bible doesn't teach us to think of others before ourselves, it teaches us to think of others in addition to ourselves, it teaches us to think of only 1 person before ourselves, that is God. Aside from God the bible explicitly teaches us to think of ourselves before others, because how we think of ourselves we think of/towards other people. And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. Mark 12:29‭-‬31 KJV You cannot love your neighbor if you do not first love yourself. You cannot believe that Jesus died for others unless you believe Jesus died for you, you cannot believe that others are worthy of forgiveness unless you believe that you are forgiven by God. Edit: you mentioned worrying in your last paragraph, you aren't supposed to worry about anything or anyone, because worrying denotes a lack of faith and a lack of belief.

I'm fairly new to this channel, and since discovering it I've been totally consumed with random videos showing up on KZbin. I absolutely LOVE the way Pastor Winger breaks down the nuts and bolts in passages, and looks at it from every angle. I've seen some where he shows two ways to look at a verse/passage, helping you have your own lightbulb go off to the correct understanding. This passage in Mark really hit me brought a fuller understanding for me. There are so many times where I might pray for a person's healing, or salvation, or guidance in general, etc. But in many situations, in most of these things, it's not always clear what God's will might be. We certainly don't know all the details of a situation that God has, so it can be difficult to pray with certainty for a particular outcome. Typically opting for "Your will be done" may sound like a cop-out to some, believers and unbelievers, but it is the true summation of our request. We sincerely want God's will to be done, and to align with that, regardless of what our personal predilections otherwise. That is where the total trust of God comes in. There are times that the Holy Spirt indwelling us gives us a firm conviction on how to pray. During the years of COVID, I have been struck with a few firm convictions like this. One was during and after the 2020 election, where I was admittedly confused about the results as they were being announced the morning after the election. I poured my heart out to God, my confusion and dismay, and how I'd felt so SURE where his will was leading us. I was suddenly hit with an impression, more a SEEING of the words rather than hearing, to "Pray for all that has been hidden to be revealed." I've been praying that, fervently, that exact phrase. And as the nearly three years since that day have passed, I've been astounded at how many things God HAS revealed! The second big one that comes to mind is a situation where news about a high school classmate having some kind of stroke, embolism, something undetermined. His daughter was asking for prayer on FB, and he'd been found unresponsive on the floor in his home, was in ICU, and the doctors didn't think he'd live the night. I was quite literally gob smacked by the Holy Spirit, to PRAY! PRAY NOW! Pray for his healing! and it tore through my soul and I prayed intensely, then for I have no idea how long, until exhaustion I guess, and started again the next morning. I was fully confident that he was going to recover. I'm just saying that there have been a number of times in my life that I knew I was fully in God's will when I prayed specifically, as he actually led me to have that confidence. Many times I know with confidence that I'm praying within his will because of what scripture alone tells me. But those are usually the "thy will be done" cases. I just love knowing that I serve a Creator God who knows the end from the beginning, and will guide me with specificity when appropriate.

Brother Mike, thank you for yielding to the Holy Spirit in your studies, which edifies all believers who study this now with you! The inspiration of the Holy Spirit to show us Jesus's faith in the Father's will, in the garden of Gethsemane, though His answer was no, ought to be before the church of God more prominently, as that answer led to our redemption! God bless you in your labor of love for the Gospel, brother.

My mother was a strong Christian and my dad and I also. She struggled with a rare genetic disorder that caused a laundry list of issues physically and mentally. We prayed for healing for years but it never came, she went to be with God five years after battling her illness. God doesn't enjoy seeing us suffer but He does will it because it builds our faith and forces us into submission to His will. He is a great comfort to those who are suffering. And I am grateful for that.

About 21 mins in, the way you drew on prayer being relational made me feel such a love for God and instantly I desired to go and pray right then and there! This teaching is so clear and true. I’ve always believed in praying in Gods will. My mom was very ill and I was so overwhelmed seeing her suffer so much. When I got home from the hospital I prayed and told God that I know He can heal her but that I did not want to see her suffer. So I asked Him to either heal her or take her if it was His will. The next day my mom went to be with the Lord. His will was to take her home.

Several years ago the Lord healed me from Tuberculosis and hernia by just believing and confessing the Word of God (promises of healing). I am now 42 years in the ministry and until now every time i apply the principle of Mark 11:22-24 i could see how powerful it is. I believe in the Principle of Faith and Confession, and until now im applying it in my daily living. "The just shall live by Faith!" Jesus said, "If you can BELIEVE all things are POSSIBLE to him who BELIEVES. Therefore only those who BELIEVES in this biblical principle of Faith and Confession will experience this Truth.
