I’m curious about the tonal difference between the 515 Adirondack top and the 815 top. You’ve mentioned that the brighter sound of Eastman isn’t your favorite, yet the 815 is your main mandolin. Does the 515 BLK LTD differ in tone compared to the 815? Thanks and enjoy your videos!

There is a difference but of course it's much less than the regular 515 vs the 815. The 815s select higher quality woods.

Jeremy, of course, I have been seriously entertaining the idea of picking up mandolin. I am interested in your impression, experience, and knowledge about other folk instruments such as the Irish bouzouki, cittern, mandola, mandocello, etc. Is the mandolin the instrument that can work with any traditional Irish, Scottish, or American folk music? On my speakers, the 515 and 514 have equal-quality sound but I like the round hole, why does it seem most mandolists (?) seem to choose the f-hole style?

I think most bluegrass players (which tends to make up the majority of mandolin players) prefer the f holes because it gives a bit more punch and projection for chop chords and cutting through 4+ other instruments (also because the loyd load f-5s had/have it and those being basically the Stradivari of mandolins of course other makers are going to try to emulate them) whereas the oval hole gives it a more full sound which is more suitable for unaccompanied (or less accompanied) play. Ultimately though it’s just a matter of preference for the player.

The A looks like it has a longer neck, I’m guessing it’s cause there’s no wing blocking like the F, the F looks cooler, I’m no mandolin player but I have really come around to liking them more and more

I thought the 415 was Spruce top/ Mahogany back and sides? Why aren't they signifying Adirondack on the Specs?

This is actually our review of the MD515-BK-LTD models. They are a quick limited edition from Eastman using Adirondack tops, although you are correct the MD415s use Spruce/Mahogany. 🙂
