What a great sweet sound and look. I think they hit a home run with this one!

Sounds good! What would be very helpful also is to see a comparison between the Bourgeois and a Northfield NF-F5s which is the only other good quality F style mandolin on the market in that price range that I’m aware of.

That’s a good idea, we can put that on our to do list. We would love to get some Northfields in here, even just for reviews!

Would definitely love that comparison, as well!

Jeremy could make a torrified toilet seat sound great, however I would buy a Bourgeois F5 if I was 50 years younger. Thanks for another good review!

I have a wondrous Eastman 814. I think I would like this even better because of the wider nut, but slightly prefer the open, woody sound of the 814. I think this is very likely a great instrument. I'd love to hear a shout-out with some of the others in its class. Love the blonde.

I heard there is also going to be a black edition. Any estimates on release dates of either?
@AcousticShoppe Жыл бұрын
Bourgeois is going to have more information on those models at NAMM & we’ll be trying them out this week but yes! There is a Blacktop in the A-Style at least. Stay turned for more information, we’ll be live-streaming at the Bourgeois booth this week!

Very neat development -- although does the world really need yet another choice on an F-5! 😂🤣😂 Still even if we do not NEED another choice -- what can it hurt? It is a very handsome and tasteful design -- the colors are just right. The last mandolin I made is amber and that so beats doing a sunburst -- especially trying to sunburst on a porous wood like spruce? I think if you measure that nut will be 1 3/16" I heard 1 3/8" and 1 3/32" mentioned in the video. I think 1 3/16" is what it is?
@AcousticShoppe Жыл бұрын
The official spec on the nut width is 1 5/32"!

24th subscriber LIKE, 260th desktop view to be the first to hear this blonde bombshell of a mandolin. Would that be like "The Marilyn 'Monroe'..." model? I think that for most ears-opinion, a tone-sample really needs to be a side-by-side comparison with other 'similar' models. 2 cents.

I'm sure its a nice build. I personally don't like blond mandolins, or banjos, but some people do of course. Northfield does make one in that price range. I know you would need side by side comparison, but I think Northfield might have that one beat on tone. Maybe not. 🙃

Don’t freak out, peeps- I’m sure that Jeremy meant to say that the nut width is 1 3/16” not 1 3/8”! I wonder how it compares to the sound and feel of your Gibson SB….

That's what I was thinking also. Probably 1-3/16". I just caught he said 1-3/32" later in the video'

What is the word you’re saying. “Tourified”? Is that the wood as opposed to sitka or Adirondack?
@AcousticShoppe3 ай бұрын
Torrefaction is a treatment done to wood to get a different sound out of the instrument. In the acoustic world, builders use the treatment to get a more "vintage" tone out of the instrument they're building. So this mandolin, for example has an Adirondack top and Maple Back/Sides that have been all treated with torrefaction. They do the treatment before carving/working with the wood, then they make the instrument. There's a lot more that goes into the process than what I can explain honestly but I hope that helps!

How does this compare to an 815V ... I'm trying to decide between those two
@AcousticShoppe Жыл бұрын
They are quite different in comparison considering that the Bourgeois is a poly finish, wider nut, and thermo cured. The 815v has a darker and thicker tone, meanwhile the M5F is more articulate and benefits the most from being played in.
@cfmartin568 Жыл бұрын
So is the mandolin partly built in Lewiston? Or what?
@AcousticShoppe Жыл бұрын
They are build by Eastman to Dana Bourgeois' spec, but there are hopes to make higher end ones in the US.

Beautiful instrument. With that said, it sounds just too much like an eastman. It lacks volume and punch. Trebles are too thin and tinny. Dana is a premier luthier. Hopefully, he will get this ironed out with eastman to produce a mandolin that has a professional sound on par with northfield. They aren’t there yet, but being a prototype I bet Dana will get the sound quality ironed out for eastman to produce an instrument to compete with northfield. This prototype isn’t going to do that! Absolutely beautiful instrument though.
