Great advice for newbies on the placement of the fingers. we don't hear that from most you tubers. I myself am a newbie (1 year) and I had to find that out on my own. I think if I had seen this earlier on, I would have an easier time with the barre chords. Those types of tips are what I look for.

Thanks, as always, Justin. I have been using your second example for a long time, I like it because I can slide or move the second and fourth strings together up or down the fretboard.

This is probably stupid and/or an inaccurate observation, but I gotta ask-for the first C7-why is it your middle finger appears to almost be crossing over your ring finger? Is that on purpose or is that just how your fingers naturally set? I see professional musicians do this chord shape a lot and I’m always wondering what, why, and how it is like that lol. For reference, I’m relatively new at guitar (I played when I was a kid so I do have some experience, but I really just got back into it and started practicing regularly about a year ago), so the finger crossing thing is both baffling and fascinating. I actually like doing bar chords but I don’t think my fingers have the dexterity and strength to cross like that! So I’m just curious as to what’s going on haha. Sorry if my question is dumb or makes no sense. I’m still new at this and there’s a LOT to take in.

Could you do a walk-through on the Elliott Smith song King's Crossing? It's one of my favorites and I'd love to learn it with you because you make his songs so digestible.

I've tried for over two years to follow the "correct" exercises and I can no more play a song than I could at the beginning. My firm belief now is to ignore all that theory. Just dig out the tabs and learn as many songs as you can. What sounds better to an audience? Rattling off a dozen hits or playing the pentatonic shapes perfectly? They won't be interested. And unless you want to write music, I don't think you should be either. I'm done with theory.

I find you need to do both. Learning just theory won’t teach you songs. But learning theory as you learn songs helps you understand how they work and why they sound good. Learning scales and chord shapes definitely makes it easier to learn too - as you learn proper finger placement. Same goes for just learning theory - you won’t get much out of it doing this, learning songs definitely makes playing guitar rewarding.

I only learned basic theory stuff but it helped me understand the relation between notes more and helped me a lot in learning and getting motivated.
