@Lauren Bateman Morning Miss Lauren I just don't know where I would fall in your classes. I watched you playing Amazing Grace yesterday. I liked the tabs and the picking. Today, I will start practicing what I learn by watching you. I meant that I put the guitar down when I was 15 and picked it up again after 40 + years. By watching your class yesterday on Amazing Grace, I'll be able to play it today.

I am 67 years old and a beginner. I started taking private lessons and spent 6 months learning how to read music. I don’t see how that helps me. I think learning chords are more important. Is there a benefit in learning to read. I love your lessons
@LaurenBateman3 жыл бұрын
Patti, I wasn't able to read music for 2 decades. I'm still not good at it. You don't need it as a guitar player that wants to have fun. What I believe you should learn is how to read rhythm. That's super important. Forget the site reading. Takes too long and bogs you down. But that's my personal opinion. I never went to school for music so I have different ideas.

I am a beginning guitar person who taught myself piano for a wlhile. I belonged to a large jazz club in Washington, DC. I knew a lot of musicians. I asked a piano player about reading music and he told me that if you learn by ear and can feel the music you are able to improvise much easier, but if you can only read music you may be limited to playing it the way it is written. He felt reading was limiting your playing. He also said that reading has its own purpose but not so much for him. He could read but used fake books and lead sheets to learn the tunes.

That taking up something like playing guitar or any instrument for that matter requires constant practice for most of us. And with no pain there is no gain I'm finding that out cuz my fingertips are very sore at this point I've been doing this for 10 days Non-Stop 10 minutes four times a day I will keep you advised on my progress if you like it. Very helpful. As you warned, I did experience some difficulty with the strumming pattern. I found it helpful to visualize each measure as consisting of 4 identical chord triplets with the final 2 chords of each chord triplet tied together. That sets up the bluesy short-long, short-long, short-long, short-long pattern for each measure. Some players (like myself) prefer to begin their strumming with a long rather than a short. That is easily accomplished by simply treating all 3 chords of the very first chord triplet played as being tied together. I don't know how rigerouse all of this is; but, it was helpful to me.
