If Scotland had remained loyal to the Catholic Church and rejected the Protestant Reformation led by John Knox, the historical, cultural, and political landscape of Scotland and perhaps the whole of the United Kingdom might have been significantly different. Here are a few potential outcomes: 1. **Political Alignments and Conflicts**: Scotland’s alignment with Catholicism might have strengthened its ties with other Catholic nations, particularly France, with whom Scotland historically had the "Auld Alliance." This could have led to different alliances and conflicts within Europe, especially against Protestant England. This enduring Catholic identity might have either deepened the conflict with England or possibly led to a different trajectory in the relationship if England sought to isolate Scotland diplomatically or militarily. 2. **Cultural Identity**: A Catholic Scotland would have retained more of its medieval religious institutions, like monasteries and abbeys, which were dissolved and often destroyed during the Reformation. This might have meant a continuity of certain medieval cultural practices that were suppressed or lost due to the Reformation. Art, literature, and music might have evolved differently, reflecting a continuous Catholic tradition rather than adopting new Protestant influences. 3. **Union of the Crowns and the United Kingdom**: The Union of the Crowns in 1603, when James VI of Scotland also became James I of England, could have been more contentious if Scotland had remained predominantly Catholic. This religious difference might have made the political union less stable or perhaps delayed it. The formation of the United Kingdom itself could have been affected, altering the course of history for both Scotland and England. 4. **Scottish Enlightenment**: The Scottish Enlightenment might have taken on a different character. The Enlightenment in Scotland was significantly shaped by the intellectual freedom and inquiry that followed the Reformation. A Catholic Scotland might have seen a different type of Enlightenment, perhaps more closely aligned with the Counter-Reformation's intellectual movements seen in parts of Europe. 5. **Colonial and Global Implications**: Scotland's role in the colonial endeavors under the British Empire might have been altered. Religious affiliations significantly impacted colonial policies and relationships with indigenous peoples. A Catholic Scotland might have had different priorities and methods in its colonial and trading ventures. Overall, the religious landscape of a nation deeply influences its political decisions, cultural developments, and international relationships. Scotland’s remaining Catholic would not only have changed its own trajectory but likely would have had ripple effects throughout European and world history.

When St Andrew's University was founded it would not have been English speaking as the English language did not come into Scotland until after the reformation. Scots was the language of the Royal Court and Parliament, and would have been used at St Andrews.

Scots is a form of English. Saying it's not English cause it's different to Standard English is like saying that Geordie isn't English. And Old English definitely wouldn't be English by your criteria.

@@callummackay4412 Scots is derived from a dialect of Old English, hence English. English technically isn't a single language, but a language family comprised of two languages, Northern English (which includes Scots) and Southern English (which includes Modern Standard English).

I am delighted to learn that non-believers are now in the majority in Scotland. I am hopeful that in a decade or so, the curse of religion will have all but disappeared, from the land of the Enlightenment. Let there be an end to sectarianism and bigotry.

I don’t when the schism began but Scots were fiercely anti Catholicism. Maybe because France and later Spain tried to conquer the British isles

@@monke.2191That is blatantly untrue. Just stop and think for a minute about all the atheists killed around the world just for refusing to pretend to believe in a God they don’t believe in. Execution of atheists is still alive and well in some parts of the world you know. Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, religion is barely a thing at all... Are you seriously suggesting that people who have had very limited exposure to religion throughout their lives are suddenly going to believe in some god they’ve barely heard of when times get tough? Or perhaps you believe that these people have simply never had to endure anything excruciatingly painful? Either way, I find your remark both false and highly belittling of people whose enduring inner strength you will never know.
