One of Cambodia’s hidden gems, Koh Rong Samloem, offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. I recently spent a few days on this stunning island, and here's my report for fellow Midlife Adventurers.
Why Koh Rong Samloem?
With ten nights in Cambodia, I wanted a beach getaway. Sihanoukville and the islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem were options. I chose the quieter Koh Rong Samloem, specifically Sara Resort at Saracen Bay, known for its peaceful ambiance and beautiful beaches.
Getting There
From Siem Reap, I opted to fly to Sihanoukville and then took a ferry to the island. Despite some confusion at the ferry terminal, the resort staff was accommodating.
The Ferry Ride
The ferry ride offered stunning views of islets and lush greenery. The resort’s boat picked me up from the terminal, and I was soon relaxing at Sara Resort, enjoying a cool drink.
Enjoying the Beach
The beach was clean and calm, perfect for a relaxing dip. Dinner at the resort featured delicious barbecued shrimp, enjoyed by the beach under tiki torches.
Exploring Saracen Bay
Day 2 started with a local noodle soup breakfast, followed by a walk along the bay, where I saw remnants of resorts affected by Covid lockdowns. I also enjoyed a delicious lunch at Eden Resort and relaxed by the pool.
Adventures at Lazy Beach
On Day 3, I hiked to Lazy Beach on the island's west side. It was a quiet, serene spot perfect for relaxation. Dark clouds gathered, so I returned to Saracen Bay for lunch at Onederz hostel and dessert at La Passion.
Departure and Reflections
Day 4 was my departure day. After breakfast, I took the ferry back to Sihanoukville and traveled to Phnom Penh by bus. Koh Rong Samloem, despite its quieter, recovering state, is a beautiful and peaceful destination. It's perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, and simply enjoying the island's tranquility.
Conclusion
Koh Rong Samloem is a gem worth visiting. With its stunning beaches, clear waters, and laid-back vibe, it’s a fantastic getaway. As tourism recovers, it’s bound to offer even more to its visitors. Don't miss out on this beautiful island!
