Great insights as usual Prof. Habib. Just some additional material to add to your next text book given your assertion that we get and deserve the government we choose. Someone once said something to this effect "The problem with democracy is that you end up with an illiterate majority ruling over a literate minority" Isn't that what we currently have and will continue to have until the majority have been educated in even the most basic sense. Events over a number of years and more so the recent events at Senekal have confirmed what a callous society we've become. It's amazing how quickly the accused farmer was arrested and all the trumped up charges; attempted murder etc. etc. and they are also considering adding treason in for good measure yet ACTUAL murderers roam our streets with impunity. There are never enough police vehicles to attend to ACTUAL murders yet SEVEN were readily available to arrest this one farmer. Just yesterday mobs rampaged through the vicinity of the M19 in KZN looting businesses, burning tyres on the roads and stoning vehicles from overhead bridges. Has anyone been arrested for this? Are some of these actions not attempted murder? If this doesn't make you sick to the point of wanting to vomit then nothing will. I cringed when I heard a reporter from one of the well oiled MSM propaganda machines lament that the accused murderers of Brendan Horner were injured during the commotion at the Senekal courthouse. WOW give me a break!!. Were these barbaric murderers expecting to be airlifted to a five star facility for treatment after the callous murder of this innocent man in the prime of his life? I can tell you without a shadow of doubt that his contribution to society would have been infinitely more than those #$@%. The fact that Brendan's murder has become a secondary issue and these murderers given primetime coverage by so called "educated" people is disgusting to say the least.

What is it that the farmers were standing for when they burned and threaten the police? The two murderes were in court already but the white farmers wanted them to be released so that the can perform mob justice to them, why should that be allowed?

That comment on Cyril is so spot on. That BBEEE millionaire has got the manners of the house, but has forgotten the reality of the fields. If you get my meaning. And to stretch that analogy and confuse metaphors, the house always wins. He only talks to place the house investors. He forgets about those vested here.

A showdown between law and order versus chaos. The gathering has nothing to do with EFF versus farmers be they whatever. I hate racial overtones in the expression whenever a protest has to take place . This makes me sick because I have friends and relatives married to someone of a different because of love. Then you come forth and start inciting your hate by veering off into race issues. Please those who do like to see peace in South Africa should just leave and we can organise something for them to be transported to Lybia or Syria. Those farmers as well as those EFF followers that wants war you are welcome to show yourself and we will help you to be transported with your guns to Syria and Lybia.

If someone shoots your dog do you take it to the vet or go looking for the culprits? You see the prof is talking about fixing a problem of national interest. Not whose poephol you have your mthondo in.

Excerpt from an article posted online, perhaps this helps to explain the actions of the farmers in Senekal? The Hawks are in possession of a detailed report about Paul Roux police involvement in local stock theft syndicate, responsible for the murder of Brendin Horner. Farmers in the East Free State say the brutal murder of the 21 year old Brendin Horner would not have taken place if the Hawks acted on a detailed report containing the names of a local stock theft syndicate, submitted to a lieutenant colonel of the Hawks working at Hawks HQ. The report contains the names of senior Paul Roux police officers involved in the syndicate, photos of the cars of stock thieves and their registration numbers and names of people with insider knowledge of corruption at Paul Roux police and their collusion with the stock theft syndicate. Mr. Herkie Viljoen, safety co-ordinator for the Bethlehem district agricultural association, openly told Rapport that Brendin died because people did not do their jobs. Several agricultural leaders have said that the Police’s lack of action against the stock theft syndicate, combined with the conviction that many SAPS members themselves are involved in the stock theft syndicate, is what led to the boiling over of emotions of protestors, who entered the Senekal court on Tuesday, where the 2 suspects appeared in connection with Brendin’s murder the previous Thursday. Mr Viljoen had held a speech in front of the court on Tuesday, in which he said Bheki Cele, minister of Police, must tell the country what happened with the report about the involvement of Paul Roux police members, in stock theft in the area. Mr Viljoen said that if the Hawks acted on the information about the syndicate provided to them in January, with full proof and details, the stock theft syndicate which has been terrorising farmers for a full 2 years, would not have been able to do to Brendin what they did. He said they first raised the issue with local Police stations and when they got no reaction they raised it with the Police cluster office, but again got no reaction. Mr Viljoen says he then sent a full report to the Hawks Lieutenant Colonel in 2 parts, the first in December and the second part in January 2020 after which he regularly followed up on the matter but the Hawks officer always had excuses. He again followed up on the matter 2 weeks ago, and told the officer the situation in Paul Roux is getting worse. Again the officer had excuses. Shortly afterwards Brendin was murdered. The farmers also complained that when they make arrests themselves, and hand the suspects over to Police, the Police coach the suspects with what to say in court, and also confiscate the firearms of farmers afterwards, because the thieves make allegations that they were pointed at with firearms. One farmer told Rapport that the syndicate steals whole herds of sheep at a time and chases them to where they want them, and the only hope farmers have of getting their livestock back is looking for it themselves. Mr Viljoen’s report reveals shocking details and numbers. Thousands of livestock were stolen since 2018 in the area, yet only one person was arrested by Police. Some farmers have lost up to 200 sheep in a single night. Brendin’s employer, Mr Gilly Scheepers said that there is no law and order in the region, and the situation can be described as lawless and chaotic. He says 2 of his workers were almost beaten to death by stock thieves 18 months ago. The national spokesperson of the Hawks, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, told Rapport he has no knowledge of the report and the Hawks in the Free State said they received Mr Viljoen’s report only on Thursday, and they will refer it for investigation.

The thing that has always bothered me about the young mans unfortunate death is that : why would you stop if you see a civilian vehicle on your farm with people stealing your livestock (presumably unarmed) when you are fully aware of the situation of farm murders in south afrika. But (and this is speculation) if you see a police vehicle next to the road you would definately stop to hear what is going on.
