In 2015 we finished paying for the abolition of slavery campaign that we lost 8000 soldiers on to end slavery across the world. Is that not a giant feat that was worthy of some attention when this matter is brought up? I can't believe my school didn't bother to tell us about this and now we have the media burying it and making the claim that British Empire was entirely horrible when it was just the fact that we had a larger navy at the time so could purchase more slaves (from the black slave owners).

It is estimated that there could be as many as 150,000 people being kept and used as slaves.. Any suggestions that any debt or apology is owed to any other country is ridiculous. Is Germany paying us for our wealth loss in WWII or asking France for reparations due to Napoleon? Are there any former slaves or slave owners there? When the African people captured slaves, -both black and white, those people OWNED their lives; it was theirs to do with as they pleased. The slave owed their life to their owner. If the owner desired to sell his property for an agreed upon price, he could do so. So, who is to blame? The original owner who captured and sold them, or the one who bought the slave that was later set free? They should be thankful for being alive and free. “Who really owes who!”

Absolutely Britain should not be paying reparations. I feel this is an effort for well connected opportunists to seek pay outs for themselves - the money will end up enriching a precious few. Not only that, the vast majority of people in the UK had nothing to do with slavery, it was wealthy landowners that benefited from slavery and it is not right for present day descendants of non participants in the slave trade to be held accountable, financially, today. It is a massive non starter.

The real victims died nearly 200 years ago , their descendants are financially far better of than those living in the countries there ancestors originally came from , that is a fact. Google average wage in Barbados , Antigua . On holiday my Cuban guide said he wished Cuba had stayed British , as British colonies were all richer, because of all the infrastructure , bridges, railways etc Britain helped build.
