The past can't always be explained or understood by what we read in the history books. Sometimes it's filled with little-known facts that cause us to re-evaluate the people and events that make history.

No doubt that when Jackson lay dying and said "Let us cross over the river, and rest under the shade of the trees", he anticipated seeing Christ.

It was a reference to his childhood when he was orphaned and lived in Jackson Mill with his uncle and his favorite thing to do was to cross over a river and rest under the shade of the trees. He did this many times, some times with his friend who was a slave, and some with his sister who latter turned a Unionist. But you could be right and probably are :)

+Toggle Bogle You're attitude is refreshing. The real lesson of the war are the agitations - the abolitionists in the North and the fears of slave insurrections in the South. Today, we are being agitated over different issues, and we should be on our guard, hoping our "leaders" will not drive us to the sword once more. As for any guilt over the war, it is best to remember what often gets forgotten - the decades where North and South worked together to heal their war-torn country. We must honor THOSE heroes too.

Stonewall Jackson was not unique in all these things. The Rev. James Henley Thornwell was one of the primary defenders of the South, and who was one of those who persuaded Daniel Webster of all people that the Southern way of life was godly. I am one of those who knew nothing of my Southern heritage. But since discovering it, I made the choice to follow the truth, wherever it led. That journey has taught me that the LIES about what the South actually was all about are still with us and now being perpetrated against America. Slavery as an institution in the South was the most benevolent of any system of slavery, and the entire world must be indicted if it is a pure evil. But as I go to the writings of Thornwell and others, I am left with the conclusion that the South was right, the South was godly, and the North were hypocrites who waged war for reasons of theft and violation of a free people. All the racial strife - the deaths of a million freed slaves during Reconstruction, and today's racial agitation are the fruits of that unjust war.

The Bible commanded slave owners to take care of their servants. From a practical standpoint where would the Americans of African decent be today if they werent removed from the native land? I believe these questions should be asked. I also believe that the main cause of The War Between The States was not slavery. The issues had been developing a good 30 years or more before the war and revolved around Federalism vs decentalized state government. Another major issue was the unfair tariffs the South was having to pay to fund the federal government. Lincoln offered to help keep slavery with an amendment if the South did not secede. They South would have no part of it. What does that indicate?
@joebutterman3084
@joebutterman3084 8 жыл бұрын
+Albert Bryan You're quite wrong. The cause of the war was slavery. All serious historians, north and south, agree on this. The question of slavery was the one question about states rights that could not be amicably resolved and finally came to war.It's interesting to note how completely wrong Confederate leadership was on all of the issues leading up to, and in the opening stages of the war.Shelby Foote opined that the South never had a chance and that the North was fighting the war with one arm tied behind its back.Slavery was the basic cause of the war, and was definitely the reason no European nation came to the aid of the Confederacy.

Joe Butterman, At one point I was taught that the WBTS was over slavery same as you. Now I find a response like yours to be a simplistic response to a very complicated war. Slavery as a cause was Lincoln's move to achieve a moral upper hand and legitimize his invasion of the South. Why did he free slaves in the South and not in the North? That came later. Hell slaves were brought into this country by Northern Slave ships, flying the then American flag, and sold to Southerners. Do you know how much the North raised the tariffs on the South before the war? Did you know most of these tariffs went to fund the Federal Government? Do you know how different the State government was in the South vs the Federal System preferred in the North and most importantly, you may believe what you have been brainwashed into believing but the overwhelming majority of Southerners weren't fighting to keep slaves.

@97wrangler1 What God is saying here is that it was ok for the Children of Isarel to take slaves from PAGAN (non-believing in Jehovah) peoples and nations, but NOT from Israel, who worshiped Jehovah (Himself). So it's not ok to make slaves of just anyone. Jesus came to fulfill the law (all these laws for the Israelites set down through Moses by God)

Slavery existed in Biblical times. God says in the Bible that slaves should obey their masters, as that reflects well on Christ. The master is commanded to treat slaves well, and is responsible for their well being. Though freeing slaves is ideal, many slave holders weren't Jewish or Christian, and slavery was a part of every culture.
@songspiritUSA
@songspiritUSA 8 жыл бұрын
+Brett Moffatt - Exactly right. Even more, the relation between master and slave on earth was understood to be a reflection of the relationship between man and God. Today we have a similar problem, in the attacks on the relationship between husband and wife being a reflection of the relation between Christ and His Church.

From my understanding of Jackson and Lee, both men were very religious men. In Lee case, I heard that Lee hardly came around to Jackson's camp. Lee would rather hang around at Longstreet's camp. Longstreet camp was very open to card games and such.

@LordoftheKaty I have already have heard a couple of different people who say they have heard from God, that the US is going to go through a great depression much worse than the fall of 1929, IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS! We will have to wait and see, but just in case, we BETTER get prepared!

@LordoftheKaty You are probably right, and THEY are slaves to satan, who is their master! It all had to come to pass because everything is winding up, just like the Bible said it would!!! There is no mention in the Bible that anyone can attribute to being the USA, and look what's happening to the US right now - our president is bringing us down econimically, such that the US will cease to be a dominate economy - this is going to happen in the SHORT TERM, maybe in the next couple of years.

@sgtcrab1 Nowhere in the Bible will you find a scripture that commands people to have slaves! Just because God allows something, doesn't mean that is his best will! God told Moses to go to Pharaoh and tell him to let His people go. Moses said I can't do it because I can't speak eloquently. God got mad at Moses, and told him to do it anyway, and implied He would heal his speaking disability, but again Moses resisted. So God allowed Aaron to do all the speaking for Moses!

@6905632418 I believe the slavery statements in the Bible are there because God knew there will always be slavery, just like there will always be poor people - we live in a fallen world - with satan in control of the world system of doing things! The Bible SAYS this! The Bible calls satan, the god of this world!

@grelee The Bible never specifically condemns some things that are obviously sins! I believe the Bible was telling slaves how to act, because God knew there are always going to be slaves, just like there are always going to be poor people! The devil brings things like slavery and poverty, and God will not stop it, or he would not have had to put anything in the Bible about it, if He were going to stop it. Demons are behind much of the evil in this world - egging people on to commit sins!

If one was to place Religion on hold for the moment and just focus on the issue of morality instead; we can clearly see that slavery is morally wrong. Currently, we see the same issues arising in the Muslim world under Islam. Woman do not have the same rights as men......in part, due to religious teachings (although a significant portion is also cultural).

@joelweymouthtais: Actually, I believe every slave from the Ottoman Empired is dead now; that's 100%. Also, the Bible approves of slave rebellion in the Book of Exodus. Also, the rebellion of the Israelites against Rehaboam is blessed by God in I Kings 11:26-40. God only chastizes King Jeroboam (over Israel) b/c he practices idolatry in I Kings 12: 25-33. God hates slavery, whatever else might be demonstrable from the Bible, certainly that is.
