To me the X mark is his anxiety he developed based on what he had done and how he was treated thus it not only being his past friends that has X's. Can't look at people in the eyes when talking to them is a form of self abuse but also trauma they've experienced. He can't trust people or he's afraid to even connect. Him beating himself up for what he'd done resonated with me so much. I think this is one of the best non Ghibli movie anime ever.

I second the calls for "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" - alongside Your Name and this as the (non-Ghibli) holy trinity of ugly-cry anime dramas. As an added bit of trivia, unlike the others, Pancreas started as a novel, before becoming a manga and then the movie. The author had been out having a drink with a friend and talking about creative processes, and he made the point that absolutely anything - an object, a word, a setting - can be infused with different emotions given the right context around it. His friend replied "Yeah? Well, I bet you can't take a phrase like 'Let me eat your pancreas' and make someone cry with that." Challenge. Accepted.

I highly recommend Perfect Blue! It is a very influential film by Satoshi Kon, whose works inspired big filmmakers like Daren Arronofsky, Christopher Nolan, and Guillermo Del Toro. This movie also opened the door to movies that are cut and edited in a way where it is hard to tell what is real and what’s not. And it showed that animation can work in the thriller/horror genre.

Something that most people seem to be confused by: at the bridge in the end, they were having a shared dream, and Shoya was telling her that he was dying. She started crying at the bridge because she knew he had just died. But then he heard her cry through the koi fish (Koi karps have a connection to the spirit world in Japanese folklore) and woke up because of it. If she hadn't cried at the bridge, he would have died. He knew she was at the bridge because he saw/heard her cry through the fish. That's why he woke up and went to the bridge.

Wow you are amazing - I had to read the manga and re-watch it to grasp it all. At the beginning when he went to see her - he wanted to really do the sign off - convince himself that she would or had recovered and "she would be fine too" with him saying "sorry" but the conversation cued him to ask her to be "a friend" instead which was not intended and made him changed his intend. At the end, it was a dream she had - when she realized he was just like her and intending to kill himself when he came to see her originally.

‘I want to eat your pancreas’ is definitely up there when it comes to depressing anime films
@GlennLaycock4 ай бұрын
Emotion - I was so emotionally drained by the end - exhausted I was not sure what I felt - I just knew it was very good and I had to make sense of it better. The "point" was them both going forward as a partnership in life. The manga - I learned to read it backward, gets much easier after a few chapters - but it had a lot more detail and oh made good sense. The scene - I've been there - when she has injured herself and is dreaming about being a happy little girl being tucked into bed, with the world speaking like she hears but understanding it perfectly fine - but she awakes to how horrible her life as an adult is compared to that. The end song is excellent too - you could do a video on it except copyright might be tricky - almost entirely non-repeating lyrics - certainly a much higher ratio than most. I think it was designed to kind of cheer people up on "the future" for them.

I recommend the anime series *A Sign of Affection*. It also features a deaf MC, but the series doesn't rip your heart out anywhere near what this movie does. The series is kind of a "slice of life"/romance. Definitely watch the Sub instead of the Dub though, as the Sub will make text readable unlike the Dub a lot of the text being at least partially relevant to the plot(particularly characters text messaging each other). The manga for this movie though actually offers a lot more details behind different characters motivations and stuff(same with the manga for the anime I recommended) so that can offer greater insight into how things turned out and also shows some of what they got up to after the end of the movie.

This movie was great and now that i am an adult i look at my own high school experiences differently..in high school i was a happy go lucky but completely oblivious guy....for the longest time i thought my own high scool was very good, we didnt have outright bullying in my school..we didnt have cliques in school, everybody was friends with everybody, atleast that's what i believed...i reconnected with an old friend recently and i was talking about our school time and said we were lucky that we didnt have bullying or fights in our batch even to this day everyone was really good friends with each other and what she said opened my eyes..she said that i was wrong because i was the class topper and a nice guy and everyone liked me so me and my best friends didnt really had a hard time...but in the last year of high school, a guy proposed to her and she got angry and denied him and other people saw that and made up rumors about her, she had to take a month off for some family emergency and there was a nasty rumor going in high school that she got pregnant by him and had to stay off school because she was going through abortion...i was completely surprised bcoz i never heard taht rumor but she said that last year of school was difficult for her bcoz all of her girl friends alienated her and most of the guy friends teased her about the public proposal from that guy..she had a few friends but she had become a joke of the school, everybody laughing at her and passing comments made her feel so terrible, she was lucky that she had a group pf close friends to rely on her but most of us werent that helpful...she said that i was one of the good ones bcoz i was always nice to her and didnt treat her differently but i was just completely oblivious to that rumor but i too laughed at her whenever made fun of her of the guy propsing to her in front of everybody...i felt really ashamed that i didnt know what was going on and she always laughed with us too, so we thought it was okay, we didnt know she felt this bad an alone...we all went away to college after that so she started form scratch..i realize now that people like Ueno ang young Shoyo are rare but people like Kawai and Sahara who enable those bullies and do nothing are common and i was one of that...i my case we all grew up and matured quickly after college and my classmates got back together at reunion, many of felt terrible and apologised to her and she was nice enough to accept it and we all are still friends to this day...but we learnt a valuable lesson and we plan on passing on that lesson to the younger generation

Edit: Sorry didn't fully read the comment. But the "Frieren" recommendation with definitely touch the heart and is not a Studio Ghibli movie. This movie really touches the heart. Nice to watch movies with you again! If you want to watch something with a lighter tone but still a good watch, Studio Ghibli's movie "Spirited Away" is a good one. Great art and fantasy. Highly acclaimed movie. Or if you want to try out a series that easily digestible and doesn't require you to watch a ton of it, a popular series just finished up it's first season: "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End." The last one is broken up into short 20 minute episodes but they pack a lot of good story into it. Lots of people watching it right now. Can't go wrong with either one, I promise and I'm sure you'll enjoy them. But whatever you decide, I'm sure we'll love to see them with you! Cheers!

March Comes in Like a Lion (realistic drama + wholesome) Live action exception: Alita Battle Angel - this one live action is actually pretty good. Others/serialized: Nodame Cantabile, Elfen Lied, Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

1 Regarding the title, "the shape of voice" (the voice's shape) is the literal translation of "koe no katachi". "A Silent Voice" was the English version of the title. These changes happen a lot between vastly different languages, as you may have already realized. 2 A lot of people understandly hate/can't stand Ueno the most but to me Kawaii was worse, as the story never, not once, tries to entertain the idea that she's faking her innocence. It feels as though she truly believes she did nothing wrong, a constant victim syndrome. At least Ueno, terrible as she may be, was straightforward with her feelings (which in reality where also mostly fabricated out of low self-esteem, guilt and probably a loss of belonging). When the story we get to see ends, Kawaii has learned and reflected on absolutely nothing. 3 I love how you picked up on the parallelism between the fireworks in the opening scene and the festival scene later on. 4 At 30:20 we're shown that his childhood friends happened to be around the area when he fell into the water and were the ones that rescued him. 5 I highly recommend you read the manga. The film is a fantastic adaptation but it had to leave some things out for the sake of time, as is usually the case.

@joaosoares-rr5mj I'm okay with the fact that they don't kiss. The romance was never really in the foreground for the story imo. Like, it wasn't tacked on arbitrarily, or anything like that, but the core of the story was the redemption arcs, which were handled exquisitely.
@joaosoares-rr5mj5 ай бұрын
@@dillonbrett9259 well yes, but also the core of the story is her understanding that she can be happy and that she is not a burden to the people around her, that they like being with her, and I wanted her to be super happy, and it is clear that she had feelings for him ( same as he had feelings for her) therefore, them kissing would for me, simbolize her happiness reaching the top

ueno i cant really hate tbh. from her perspective shoko was the one to ruin everything for them. ueno was genuinely nice to her in the beginning, helping her out, taking notes for her but really, shoko shouldnt have been there in the first place. she shouldve been in a special school or class. also the teacher was horrible as well, not slowing down so ueno was falling behind on her own studies while trying to help shoko. also, she liked ishida when they were younger and saw the bullying as a way to get his attention since he started it, which is messed up, not gonna lie. but ueno has guilt for how he was treated back then because it was something she couldnt get back and it was all shoko's fault. not really but it all started because of her. to speak harshly right now, shoko shouldnt be the classes responsibility, they shouldnt have to learn sign language, a whole other language to help one student. it would be nice if they did but again, its not their responsibility. and one thing ueno hates about shoko is she never really spoke to her on the same level. she'd always apologize instead of telling her how she felt. shed put on a fake smile and say thank you instead of being mad. ueno was kind to her and treated her nice and shoko just kept her at arms length. even on the ferris wheel, ueno was looking for a compromise for them to "get along" she put all out in the open for her so they'd have an understanding. but shoko rejected it. though shoko was being genuine when she said she didnt hate ueno but herself but she still rejected uenos compromise. still shitty for her to some of the things she did but i understood why after a while. but fuck kawai, shes the worst. she faked singing early so shoko would sing early so she could step in and look like a good person. she faked cry when she was called out in elementary, she purposefully spoke aloud about past events when ishida confronted her and you can see her smiling as ishida runs out the classroom.

there's so many little things you notice in this movie during a second watch! I love this movie sm :') Ueno has a lot of depth actually, she's struggling in school because she's dyslexic (which is why she has such a hard time communicating with Shouko) and in the scene were they're reading outloud she gets reprimanded while Shouko gets "a pass" in her eyes. She does a lot of mean things, but I feel like at the end she has at least grown a little bit by starting to use sign language to communicate with Shouko (even if she insulted her lol). Kawai is one that doesn't really grow at all in my eyes, she never takes any acountability (compared to Ueno who doesn't hide her dislike) for bullying Shouko. When they're singing she's the one that pretends to start singing which causes Shouko to sing too early, but then she acts as if she's being "nice" by helping her. It's a different kind of bullying, but she keeps acting as if she's "innocent" in it all...
