i'm not religious, but i have a deep respect and admiration for those who've managed to carve out a satisfying, simple life that actually allows for a healthy level of sleep, leasure and physical activity, as well as living through rewarding skills. seriously, in a way i envy them.

Look a bit further into them. I've been listening to a podcast from people that have left the Amish. They have serious trauma from the way the reglion treats them. Plus how they hide sexual and physical abuse.

Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins and rose on the 3rd day. Believe in him and repent of your sins so you can have eternal life. Few find him, many perish in their sins. Don't go to hell. Its real simple.

I think I want to be Amish. I long for a simpler down to earth life. What's so great about all of our modern conveniences that have made us more isolated and separated from others than ever before?

I live about one hour north of Sugar Creek. There are Amish communitys the same distance North from me as well. I am proud, excited whatever the word is,....I like to live in the state with the largest Amish population in the US. I have always admired the Amish way of life. It's been a long time since I been to Sugar Creek, I just don't have reason to go that far South....or North to Middlefield.

Some of my ancestors were Penn. Dutch. My great, great grandparents spoke this German dialect at home. Sometimes I wish they hadn't left Penn. I could have lived like this and been very happy. But then, because my ancestors did leave Penn, my grandma met my grandpa......and so on, and it's how I got here. I need to go visit there.

The tourism in Branson did the same thing to the country area around it, What used to be a quaint fishing town is now a Vegas strip of lights day and night. I think Branson let the tourism go to their heads and get to far.

AMISH culture can and has shown a nation what sustainability is about, they have been doing this life style since 1800's and to me there the ones whom are intelligent, giving, caring and take care of their own without any gov't' funding. This once great nation called America could learn so much about their way of life. Not pushing their religious beliefs but their way of a peaceful life, no electronics, no negative means to impede on them and not stress of course a much healthier way of life. Many Blessings to you all 💕🌞🌻

They aren't necessarily sustainable. I'm sure most people would be shocked at just how NONsustainable they are. People need to move past the quaint or precious view they have of the Amish. The culture is based on deeply held religious values, not ecological, back to nature or other "feel-good" ideas.

the Amish existed through the extreme persecution of the 17th century before they settled in America. How ironic America is "and liberty and justice for all" just so long as you do what we say. that isn't freedom. The Amish are doing nothing to hurt you, and all the outside world does is belittle them and treat them as a freak show. i am not Amish, but i am a Christian with the deepest respect for them.

They're very inspiring. I visited them 3 times in Pennsylvania. Their Anabaptis roots keep them authentic and a great example to the world. With everything else going around us which is totally the opposite from their lifestyle and belief system, they give me hope about human kind. Hope they remain original because they can help a lot of people to understand the world in much simpler way. 🙏

You can if you want to live that way. Just get a house like Amish people remember they do not have light switches study up on them before trying to live like they do. If you want to be simi Amish then wear a white bandana like they do and dress like they do. And you can't drive remember. No computer they do not believe in them. And women never cut their Hair, they wear no makeup. They make their own soap!

In order to live the Amish restricted life, one would have to be born in it. You don't miss what you never had really. I haven't heard of outsiders joining their community, looks like they also conserve their ethnicity. I'd say that their way of life is admirable & reflects more how God intended for us to live on this earth, however, Jesus did not teach us to keep the gospel to ourselves, rather he mingled with all people in order to save them.

My mother was Amish and chose to leave to pursue her dream of being a cosmetologist (which is a symbol of vanity to the Amish, so a big no no). You can join an Amish community but you have to contact the leading Bishop of that county and you have to live with a host family. They want to be sure that you're not going to be baptized into the church, then just leave. You have to show patience and have great determination. You'd have to take steps such as living with a host family, giving up your modern electronics, studying the Bible every day, and studying Pennsylvania Deitsch (it's not Dutch at all. It's a dialect of German that was spoken in certain regions of Switzerland, where the Amish originated), and meeting regularly with the Bishop. It's a long process, but it is possible and can be done. People have done it.

cheddar cheese and cuckoo clocks have nothing to do with switzerland - sorry. also, the swiss amish did not originate from zurich, but from berne. the amish culture as such has a background in which swiss emigrants played a role amongst others. the food they serve today, the music they play, their customs do not represent switzerland - that's just the way it's all marketed - in fact, the followers of joseph ammann were such a minority in switzerland such a long time ago, they do not really figure in todays consciousness of swiss history. nevertheless, I think they are lovely people and I can understand why they had to leave switzerland; living separate from the world and maintaining such a different set of values is impossible in a country a small as switzerland.

Ironically that this doesn't really portray a 'simple' life at all. A place packed with bus loads of tourists eating 'all you can eat' lunches at so called 'Amish Kitchens' which don't seem to be run by Amish, before they go 'shopping' up and down the street. The whole place seems to be doing very well taking advantage of people's curiosity about their neighbours. It all seems a bit 'fake' somehow. I've visited quiet & 'simple' villages where there's only one basic shop and hotel for miles!

I appreciate the beauty of seeing an Amish tourist attraction. However, I think it’s sad watching the former Amish create such an invasive environment right in the heart of the Amish population’s homeland. That act, as witnessed in this video, nearly disables my misunderstanding and disdain towards shunning; I understand the need to shun after seeing this show, sadly. The former Amish folks accepted the English “world” and now exploit the religious peaceful world of the Amish folks they claim to have left; instead, they now sell it to earn a living.

So true, puppies are just another commodity to them. Money. Shameful abuse to thus poor living beings!!!!

In many ways, education is over rated! For example: you don’t need a grade 12 to pick up or collect garbage or raise a barn or feed livestock... it is a very simple but strenuous way of living! Not everyone can live it! I most certainly wish i could but I know i wouldn’t be able to keep up! The religious beliefs are a lot too! You’d be giving up everything you love most and even then, most would not be accepted!

Simple life does not generate enough of cash to keep the land. Amish embrace a lot of silly compromises in the name of cash flow. Lehman store boasts a collection of overpriced, kitchy, cheap Chinese junk. Hurry up folks for your fix of simplicity.

A bunch of spoiled kids with their moms and daddy giving them everything, always wanting them to smile, where they aren't taught to work, it would be 😭😭😭😭. Oh, this is horrible. Which they never cared about raising a child to a human with character. Where if the economy toppled, where life is really hard, they'd probably turn to being a thief rather than asking for anything. Which if this life is started in younger age, a person grows into.it where it's simply life. Which build the business, then your kids inherit a life so they can raise a family and provide for their children. Which there's nothing wrong with being profitable as long as it is not exploitive or withholds from others. Maybe something I'm not thinking of. Just like medicinal herbs are a market that'd been good to have started a couple decades ago. Where living with others that share a vision is a start. Having sure faith in God would be an excellent start.

The simple life I love also but I have been waiting for the United States Government to take the land that the Amish people live on. The Government took the land from the Indians. Why not the Amish? The land is very fertile plus the government and businesses can use the skills that these people have. They make and sell their products to the Non-Amish and I have seen them in the train station riding on Amtrak. You can see in this video how they profit from the American people but yet and still the American people can not build houses on their land. This country is under populated. Do they pay taxes? Let them live in this country like the Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Hindu and all the other religious groups. I know the automobile industry would love for them to buy cars. Business owners may not suffer that much financially if they were integrated into American society.
