I am enjoying using this method. I have modified it a little bit though, and I would like your opinion on my modification. I have a 'passive' and an 'active' goldlist process going on in parallel. I started with the passive headlist and tested myself from the target language into English. I put non-remembered items into the distillation, and I created a new headlist in my active goldlist from the remembered items. When I distil the active headlists, I test myself from English to the target language. I am using this for Russian and Thai and it seems to be working for me.

Each time I find a new word, I write it on a « post-it » and stick it on a large paper board in my office. The various « post-it »s form a list. I come back to it after a few days and check if I can remember the meaning of the word or expression or not. If yes, I throw the post-it away. If not, I leave it on the paper board till I can remember it. I like the feeling of seeing my list getting shorter after I threw away the words I memorised. I found this system by myself. I did not know your version. Interesting to see both support the same memorisation process. Thanks for the video.

English with Max French, I have travelled in Europe and the UK but have never seen France; after hearing “horror” stories about the French and their language from friends thought it wasn’t worth the hassle. Silly attitude on my part! While COVID makes it almost impossible to travel I can put the time to good use. It’s also a challenge to see how much I can learn in maybe a year.

Thank you for the advice. I'll try it for my debuts in learning Italian. I don't think it would work efficiently for English though. I read a lot and used to write down so many words I hadn't time to review everything. Now my "method" is to make sure I understand the meaning and pay attention to the structures. Then when I encounter again and again the same word, I begin to be able to use it. For the one and only occurrence, I don't bother anymore.
@EnglishwithMax4 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. If you're already reading a lot, I think your vocabulary will improve without using methods like this. :)

I'm Russian. I learn English. It's a good method for beginners, for initial knowing of a word. But for good knowing of language, learners should use Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary (or similar Cambridge, Longman, Collins) . They explain HOW you should use words. What propositions with, what collocations, what meaning of the word. Often Russians confuse it. For example, you couldn't write the right translation of the "get" word. This method is good for simple words like "apple", "watermelon" "table" etc.
@EnglishwithMax3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point, but you can also include sentences or phrases.

Hi Emma, My method is similar to yours. I use excel instead of papers because there is unlimited space for you to record anything, like meaning, pronunciation, sample sentences and others. One more important point is that u can arrange all the words u learnt just with a click! So they wil be in order in few seconds. Of course, U can find the word U learnt within a few second, too. This practice can help u review the vocab U learnt easily. I am looking forward to your reply. Patrick
