Designer Dan Marentic shares a look inside his minimalist 685-square-foot condo that’s filled with smart storage ideas and space-saving solutions. See how he maximizes every square foot.
“Though still very small, my new condo has considerably more head room than my sister’s garage (and it’s warmer!). Many of the same storage challenges existed here, but I’ve tried to take advantage of every nook and cranny and add a few unique details as well,” says Dan. In the kitchen, additional storage hides bulky appliances, while a natural stone quartz island provides extra prep space. Multifunctional furniture increases seating in the small living room, where a mod fireplace and quirky artwork inject personality. Storage is maximized in the bedroom with custom built-ins, and the den doubles as as a second bedroom and home office thanks to a Murphy bed.

That comment about not obstructing the view of the base/skirting boards around a room is a fantastic tip. I've just tried it in my living room- shifting or removing any bulkier, lower pieces of furniture that were against walls- and it really creates a sense of order and weightlessness.

I didnt like the sofa for myself. you cant get comfy on it. specially because it doesn't have any handles to rest a pillow on it to lay down and get a afternoon nap :))

The Eames Sofa Compact is the most comfortable sofa I've ever owned. It doesn't need arms or cusions, because it cradles you upright and supports your neck and head. You can sit on it for hours without slouching.

Yes. It’s a great place but my one criticism is that there’s nowhere to really crash in the living area. It’s all seating that’s good for a short while but would be uncomfortable for a long sit (like watching a movie).

you should never have a tv over the fire place. it's bad for your neck to look up for long periods of time, it voids the warranty because it's more prone to heat damage and it just looks bad especially when you have such an amazing fireplace that should be the focal point. other than that, this is a dream home!

I'm not sure if it's the aesthetics that don't appeal to you and if so, I can see that. But if it is more about the integrity of the original piece I had the same issue with carved and sculpted books. Until I saw the huge numbers of books that libraries, thrift stores and even international English literacy programs must eventually send to a landfill otherwise. I still get an occasional twinge, but better as new art than nothing at all. The same is true, eventually, of a lot of mass-marked prints.

Ideas like that should be standard -- like the wire baskets that span farmhouse-style sinks. Ikea did it first, everyone else followed. Now if manufacturers would come out with glass panels for a flat-top electric stove that could go into the dishwasher!

Customizing kitchen layout to incorporate more (like the appliance stack) and installing floor to ceiling cabinetry in the bedroom and den. He managed to fit a Murphy bed, closet and a desk into the den. He kept the living and dining area pretty bare for aesthetics but, I think he made up for that in places guests don’t normally see.
