I agree! In fact 48 m is a normal size of an apartment in a big city in other countries too! The “problem” of that particular space is not the meters but the shape -long rectangle vs a square.

We live in Amsterdam now and so we might be biased, but this is one of my favourite homes! Love that the couple still has a full sized, functioning kitchen in such a small space. We once viewed a newly renovated, 60+ sq m home with a BAR fridge - shows how that designer was not thinking about function for a modern family.

This is probably my bias, but I find it shocking that designing a nearly 50 sqm flat to accommodate a couple (1 bedroom) is considered a challenge and a small space. And a bar fridge in a 60+ sqm place? 🙉

I don't think it "shows the designer wasn't thinking about function for a modern family", I think it's just cultural differences. No matter what space I have lived in, I have never had anything other than a bar sized fridge. When I was a kid, my family of four had a bar sized fridge, and it was no problem. You just go shopping twice a week instead of once. I live in a 88sqm home right now, and I still have a bar fridge in my kitchen. When you live in a city in the Netherlands and there is a grocery store around every corner, you don't need one of those humongous american fridges that stores enough food for a month.

I hate to break it to everybody but 48sqm is actually a sizable appartement in Amsterdam. The design is gorgeous but the focus on ‘wanting to have full sized x and y’ makes it seem like it’s a teeny tiny house. As if there’s not thousands of Amsterdam people living in ~30sqm like it’s the most normal thing in the world.

Probably one of my most favourite homes so far. I really want a living space that is small but neat as I envision myself living alone. All of my dreams are in this. Ground floor with small backyard, right in a walkable street where I can see people walking outside and living life, dining room with cushioned seats, long ass kitchen with practically everything (oven, coffee machine, dishwasher!), bookcases in living space, bedroom with cute and functional headboard things. My goodness. I'm in love. Also, I have a thing where I always pick a spot where I think I'd frequent the most in any space/room that I go. So here I think it's the corner space of the dining table where the window meets the wall. I'd people watch for hours, with my coffee in hand, smiling at people if they see me and waving at little kids. Way to beat the loneliness while still enjoying my alone time. Orrr that couch at the back garden! Reading nook done right.

This layout is perfection. The entire home relies on custom joinery/cabinets, that's why this is so harmonious. I love the fullsized galley kitchen, the slats/dowels used to give dimension, texture, natural wood, hidden bath and wc, spacious bedroom! What stood out pleasingly is how they zoned colors and textures together. It's a very smart way of avoiding a boxy feel to any space, and introduces multiple colors with different energy to a small space from which you can see from one side to the other, without looking too dynamic and busy. Having a walled garden that large (comparatively to the indoor space) in the city is a true luxury and allowed for the natural light solutions, without it the home would seem so much smaller. What I couldn't do, is live entirely without art. Beautifully done!
@lunatickgeo Жыл бұрын
Absolute genius design! This home checks so many of my own personal boxes: separate w/c from the bath, everything is on the same floor, small garden/backyard, lots of light, the dining room is a comfortable alternative to other than just dining, outdoor lounging and dining options. I also love their choices of materials and colors. The only downside for me is that since I'm not a sociable person, that kitchen is too big for my use and I have no need for a bar but that is by no means a minus for them. It's incredible that they not only fit everything they wanted and needed, but did so so elegantly! If I were to personalize the space, all I would do is make the office space bigger to fit my gaming rig, remove the bar (for storage?), and remove that wall of appliances in the kitchen. I can probably fit everything I need in the one side and now I can probably waddle down the kitchen without having to shuffle sideways! 😅

I know that this is the norm but I can't help admire the risk taken with the large windows on both sides in a ground floor apartment - giving a perfect view into the home from the street and making it obvious that they are a decently well off home. I lived in Edinburgh for many years in an affluent area and watched from the first floor as burglars broke into the unit below mine many times. Usually they just smashed the window (a similar beautiful period bay window as the one in this apartment), ran in, grabbed what they wanted and back out again. But sometimes they broke the door too (takes longer than the fraction of a second needed to break a window) and it was a door exactly like this one. This apartment is beautiful but some choices were definitely made which take safety for granted.

I guess that's why they hide their TV and appliances. Also in such a small space, it would be hard to steal anything large...so there's that...
@nomoretwitterhandles Жыл бұрын
If I'm correct, I've heard Amsterdam doesn't really have super high crime rates in terms of home theft. That's kind of just the way people are around there. Amsterdam isn't just a regular old city; it's got an entire culture to it, and part of that culture is frequently depicted as "party vibes" and "kindness". Besides, crime rate is different everywhere. Tokyo, for example, is probably way safer than most cities you can think of. The overall crime rate in Japan is one of the lowest in the world, and Tokyo accounts for nearly 1/3rd of the population, so I think it's safe to say you wouldn't have to worry too much about a burglary in a bustling city like Tokyo. Of course, this is mostly due to Japan's general culture. Amsterdam is kind of the same way.

In the Netherlands it's very normal to leave your blinds open. Everybody does it. It might feel very strange if you're not used to it. But we all keep our blinds open most of the day and even at night. Exceptions are usually to keep out the sun. So no it's not one way. But because everybody does it, they won't stand out and people won't bat an eye when they see you sitting there. Because they won't be the first nor last you pass sitting near the window. It actually adds to the feeling in the city people live there. You see the same in the 'suburbs' (for Dutch standards), everyone just keeps them open, even at night.

I love the concept and we executed what took it to the next level is the access to a garden, I have a small studio in downtown where I live but I do miss having a little outdoor area

The kitchen alone is probably about 40k Euro.

I'd say kitchen was €80,000 at least.

@@x1achilles99 at least 80k euros with currect pricing indeed. This is a custom, designer kitchen. This apartment might be small but I'm sure that ridiculous amounts of money was spent to make it look like this.

Um my tiny kitchen cost 40K to remodel - and their kitchen is about 10 times nicer.

One of the best designed, small spaces I've seen for a while.

I really like their 516 square feet home .. The design of the kitchen cabinetry is very unique.

This and many of the other apartments & homes on this channel don't seem like small or tiny homes to me. They are almost all larger than my apartment. I absolutely love the designs, but I'd love to see more people creating great living environments in sub 400 sqft of space.

Amsterdam is my favourite place to be, it’s very practical and very beautifully decorated. I would love to live in it. Thank you for letting us see your home.

Don't. I live in Amsterdam, and you need a lot of money to live here in a decent way, a lot. Stay away, unless you have a well paid job

Lovely space. A relaxing airy home in a busy city. Nice. A place I actually think I could happily live . Again, lovely.
