Simple review:
Steak was absolutely delicious and flavorful
The thickness of the steak was perfect and easy to cut
The steak had a little toughness to it and a bit chewy in spots
Nice thin crispy perfectly light golden brown breading on steak (very very flavorful)
Gravy was perfect( excellent taste and consistency) definitely homemade
Definitely hand breaded and wasn’t frozen
The onion rings and homemade ranch dressing is to die for
The size and portion was awesome size for lunch and had enough left over for two more meals
The price was 12.99 and was an awesome deal that included 2 sides and 2 types of bread( cornbread and rolls)
EXTRA POINTS:
Loved the size and atmosphere of this place, kind,efficient and friendly
Very friendly and attentive staff
The place is actual very inviting and homey,very packed (you cam tell its regular customers that eat here) the regular small town feel
I would go back to try other things on the menu,(the LARGE hamburger is a definitely must try next time

Cath, I bet Chef Jeffrey has a pretty mean CFS recipe. Maybe he will share?? We live very close to Mel's but I made a huge mistake. I pan fried, at home, Emeril's CFS recipe and now he won't eat any other. Need to get to Mel's pretty soon since they have opened back up. Need some of their Chicken and Dumplins and greens!!! Been going to Mel's at least 15 years as it's 25 minutes from my house. The line is out the door on Friday evening for the AYCE catfish and popcorn shrimp. I've visited once since the rebuild. I think they've changed the fish product to swai. I'll have to get the CFS the next time.

I didn't notice the inspection sticker until you said something but that happened to me a couple of months ago and i didn't think about it until the police got behind me and it was laying there in the passenger side seat. I don't normally let them get behind me because i've had a bad experience with one. If they get behind me i'm turning off on the next turn i don't care if it's a cemetery. But that chicken fried steak looked really good to me but i wasn't eating it so i was eating with my eyes which is how most people do. I still would try it.

Great video Chef! My wife and I have been to Mel’s and we agree this place is awesome! May I suggest you try Vernon’s Kuntry Katfish in Conroe the next time you hit the road. I used to live in Tomball back in the day and my sister lives there now. We have been to Mel’s many times. It’s fun when you go in groups but I still love Hickory Hollow in Houston. Their only location is on Fallbrook St., they used to have one in the Heights but it closed. The Fallbrook location was next to another hidden gem called The Carriage House Cafe and they had good chicken fried steak too, but sadly they closed. The atmosphere of Carriage House Cafe was so charming and you would have loved it, Chef Jeffrey. I am happy to see you visit a spot that was a part of my early adulthood and is still in my family’s restaurant rotation.
