This Bernina B380 came in for repair and the fault description was "A lot of smoke came out of the machine!"
The issue is quickly located and new part is fitted but will the machine work again?

I love it when you mentioned using an ESD strap. It is so important when working around electronics. When I was building computers we wore an ESD strap heel straps and a smock. You don't want to cause more problems than the ones you are trying to fix.

Congratulations on 10k subs. I have been watching since you were at your first 1000 and love your channel. You know SO much about machines that I am a devotee. I just purchased an Elna Stellar Air.. in excellent condition.. I will add it to my Elna Supermatic. Congratulations again.

Very interesting video. This is the first time I look at one of your videos and I will subscribe for sure. I also restore old vintage sewing machines as a hobby of mine. So far I only deal with full metal machines from the first half of the 19 th century. I knew the new modern machines was made with a lot of plastic and computer parts and those don't resist the test of time like the full metal ones. However, I did not know they became that bad, almost to be disposable things. I will have nightmares for the coming weeks about the modern crappy sewing machines.....However kudo for your video and I will watch more of them.

Thank you for your videos, I too have a helper cat. Regarding the broken plastic posts, there is a product that's been on the market for years call Plas-T-Pair, in some instances it works better than epoxy because it melts into the base plastic and forms a stronger bond whereas epoxy sits on top of the plastic, it has saved many broken plastic parts for me over the years.

Thanks. I'll keep any eye out for some of that.

@@InStitches Unfortunately it doesn't work on nylon, delrin and other plastics like the gears are made out of but you can also use it to cast parts as it was originally also used to cast tv and radio knobs

Really appreciate the fact you take us through a logical problem solving process in detail - start with what you can reasonably see first even if it didn't ultimately solve the problem. Learnt something about desoldering and soldering those pesky little pins as well.

@InStitches To answer your question (months later), yes, the cotton tipped swabs are called Q-Tips here in Canada (North America). I'm learning loads and loads from these videos, and plan to take my newly acquired knowledge and apply it to keeping my own roster of machines sewing properly. The one you did on adjusting and correcting the looping issue with your Janome serger taught me a ton about making a proper edge possible. My basic Singer 14u34b serger (80's vintage) never had a fantastic edge with the threads. Thanks to you, I now know HOW to fix the issue. Hopefully I can find a service manual online for it as the owner's manual doesn't seem to have anything I can find that instructs on how to adjust the blade position. You're knowledgeable, genial and thoroughly engaging. Thank you for giving us a place to learn about the art of maintaining these machines. It's deeply appreciated. Dave.

Great video, if it were me the next step would be to check the steper Motor for the side to side needle movement first to find out if it is locked up and if not to feel it move. A new stepper motor is much less expensive than the board.

I have checked the stepper motor and it's working. Thanks anyway for the suggestion.

Premium brand with premium price, but quality is not so premium. Cheap and cracking plastic and burning electronics. What a pity. Excellent video as usual!

Take a look at somewhere like RS Components or Digikey etc websites and look for 0.1uF X2 at 250V. You can also check the physical measurements there. Thanks.

Are you on, use eevblog forum? In saying that what manual (no wires, power) sewing machine would you recommend? In NZ, bullet (idiot) proof, 2-3 layers of seatbelt webbing (most of it goes to landfill after warrant failures & makes great straps, collars, belts etc)

Yes, I look at eevblog from time to time. I would recommend something like the Singer 201K as a good heavy domestic machine.
