I was planning on doing a solo trip to test out the Sony A1 8K camera I had rented, but it was raining pretty much everywhere around me so I decided to head back to Indiana Dunes National Park to see how it had changed since the last time I visited around 2016. Lake Michigan was looking as beautiful as ever so I explored the sand dunes a bit and even enjoyed a proper post hike meal.

In response to the idea that "everything has already been explored" you might appreciate these words from Wendell Berry: "What you are doing is exploring. You are undertaking the first experience, not of the place, but of yourself in that place. It is an experience of our essential loneliness, for nobody can discover the world for anybody else. It is only after we have discovered it for ourselves that it becomes a common ground and a common bond, and we cease to be alone."

Thanks for the memories brother; when I was a young boy we swam at the beach area behind that pavilion. It's been a few days but the trail you were on I remember was about 23 miles long. Next time you go there, if you go the opposite direction then you took you get to a place called Mt. Baldy (a real tall sand dune). There is a trail nearby that goes through the "Boggs" which is really cool; the ground springs underneath your feet as you walk across it.

Being new to the midwest, this is my favorite destination hands down! 😎 At certain points you are able to hike barefoot (carefully), then when you're ready to descend down the dunes you can literally run with all your weight into the sand and let the sand absorb each step. Amazing feeling, gotta go back asap 😀 Dogs love it too, paradise for my pup 🐶

Looks like you walked all the way to Kemil Beach. That was a really nice beach before the lake levels rose and covered all the sand. Now it is very gravelly. Another neat thing about this video: when you are on top of the dunes at 11:32 you see the city really well, but at 0:35 you just see the tops of the buildings. It's even better in person when you start at the top and run down. You can see the city sink below the horizon. Nice demonstration of the Earth's curvature.

I've been to Indiana Dunes a couple times. The first time to kill some time on the way to Chicago. The second was just for a night on our way home to metro Detroit from a trip to CO/UT/AZ. Now I feel guilty! I'll need to plan a trip to stay there a couple days and explore the dunes. BTW, an interesting fact is that there is a train station there that makes it a convenient place to camp and take a day trips into Chicago. Keep Wandering! Thx, Ken

Great Stuff! Im from the same area, been watching for a few years. I had no Idea Lake Erie was this nice I never really get a chance to go up North. I love the idea of just random exploring, go in a direction and see what is there. I know that feeling you speak of, same reason I cant play video games anymore. I remember that scene from Truman Show, as a 7th grader in the theater, it hit me like a ton of bricks. That view of Chicago across the lake...Wow
