If Dorne is responsible for the dismantlement of the Iron Throne and the end of feudalism in the story, I will laugh so hard at how badly D and D screwed up that plotline.

John T. Savage I hope to Christ that the latter is what George is building up to. Such a change would be highly reflective of his older works and his whole theme of proactive societal evolution. Plus, throughout ASOIAF he doesn't always portray feudalism and monarchy as good things.

Well I speculate that a Rhoynish restauration would involve resetteling the Rhoyne. Which would involve eliminating the Dothraki (or shipping off them to Westeros) and weakening/taking control the free cities near the Rhoyne: Qohor relies on Unsullied for its defence, the current regime will not get fresh troopes anytime soon. Also I think that it is where Oberyn founded the Brave Companions and the Golden company was and probably is a threat due to their history with Qohor. Volantis and its slaves should be a target for Dany and/or if the Tigers take control it would weaken itself by going to war. Additionally Nymeria Sand, on the daughter Volantene noblewoman of the old blood Norvos, Doran is married to a Norvosi Lady. I think Doran is playing Sacrifice moves in Westeros in order to prep the Rhoyne for resettlement. Probably Arianne needs to learn how to play the game in Westeros, Dornish law and the faith in order to rule the new Rhoynish kingdom because Doran will sacrifice himself as well.

@TheKrostiman
@TheKrostiman 8 жыл бұрын
+abdallaha92 Because unlike others Doran doesn't want his daughter to rule over ashes and bones. The Iron throne has less meaning for Dornish than for the others. Additionally the Rhoyne area appears to be the best place to live on the world map and I believe the Rhoynish were the most populous at some point. Additionally now the Dornish aren't populous enough to hold one state let alone the Westeros and the Rhoyne area, so the repopulation of the Rhoyne is a long term plan.

Preston has said Dornish laws more than any men on earth
@Spiderdudu83
@Spiderdudu83 7 жыл бұрын
Quite late, but I think what you forgot is that a consequence of dornish law over all of Westeros could be total civil wars in all of the seven kingdoms. Changing the law of succession into equality would be a total gamechanger. There would be interpretations, do this laws apply only now or for the past as well? Powerful vassals would look back in there history and it is likely that they would see plenty of marriages that make them the rightful heirs to the great houses by dornish law. After all, the gread Houses most often formed marriages with their vassals houses and often, it could have been a firstborn daughter that was married off. Everyone could legitimize their rule and wars for succession would break out over all of Westeros. Houses like the Freys, with many children that often marry to other houses and have many members would go totally apeshit. There would be nothing but chaos, with only Dorne remaining stable, as with them, the succession is clear, equality is well established. In one instant, Dorne would become the strongest and the most stable of the seven kingdoms.
@MrBiizer
@MrBiizer 4 жыл бұрын
I'm even later than you, but Dorne would never be the strongest and most stable kingdom. Preston himself pointed out, that Dorne is divided probably even more so than any other kingdom. They have the lowest numbers from all, their land is dying. Martells themselves have just a few loyal houses in Dorne and no powerful friends beyond. How would they ever hope to enforce Dornish Law everywhere else, when they have no army and no unity?
@BurningMad
@BurningMad 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrBiizer firstly, they do have an army, even if it isn't numerically as high as claimed. Secondly, Doran is almost certainly planning a move to screw over the Yronwoods and their allies, as Preston mentions in other videos. They don't need to actually enforce Dornish Law everywhere, just the threat of it will inspire the smallfolk and nobles with female lines of inheritance to rise up. If everyone else has been reduced to ashes by war and then are too busy fighting amongst each other, that creates a power vacuum for the Dornish to profit from.
@BurningMad
@BurningMad 3 жыл бұрын
Although, adding to the above, I don't think their plans will actually work. It's too nice an ending to actually occur, and I have a feeling that the war is going to come to Dorne despite Doran's efforts to stay out of the fighting. Plans often have blowback and spiders sometimes get caught in their own web.

Yeah, that makes more sense to me. Dorne have never shied away from burning peasant villages in their enemies lands, and it was a Targaryen princess that had to convince the Princes of Dorne to open the water gardens to the common folk. The Martells are also, after all, noblemen with a high opinion of their place in the world. It's more likely that they want to create conflict in the Seven Kingdoms, and spread their own influence than actually change society for the better. They are symbolic of the dying breed, desperately trying to cling to power and willing to upend any tradition or law of the land to achieve that .

@Yodah97
@Yodah97 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm pretty convinced that he wants dornish glory more than everything else, more even than revenge. If he's going to break feudalism, he can make it so that Dorne transitions much smoother than the rest of the kingdom, so it'll be an island of order in a sea of anarachy. So that when all the dust settles, Dorne will be decades ahead of everyone else in stability and power.
@ognjengaric2687
@ognjengaric2687 8 жыл бұрын
All of the replies are great, but each has it's problems 1. +Smudge Trade block isn't practical and Dorne can hardly be the dominant economic power in a long run(unless they find oil and a need for it) 2. +alearnedman I'm not sure the term lofty can be applied to Doran- he may just be a megalomaniac 3. +akrybion Doran didn't says that himself and I'm not sure why would he feel obligated to do everything Daenerys boastfully says whenever she has her period, and seventeen years is a long time to be dying 4. +Ewertton Tadeu Yeah, maybe, but at a huge cost for his family(loss of rule power etc.) Also I'm not sure Dorne has the capability to be decades ahead of anyone. Abolishing feudalism- not a great idea

Marwyn's importance continue's to grow and if I am right he is key to the endgame of the series. Of course it was Marwyn sending the visions, it's upsetting to know I did all this research on who and what he is and missed the Lancel visions. Thank you, you are simply a legend bud. Marwyn's importance weighs heavy with Martin according to him explaining in an SSM that he wasn't sure when he would have Marwyn arrive which makes him key player in the fantasy elements of our story. When do you think he gets to Slaver's Bay? Haven't chatted in a while just thought I'd ask.
@TheDelinear

Indeed, I just put Lancel's "visions" down to standard religious zealotry and/or brainwashing by those above him (as I suspect many others did). The idea that they are visions being sent to him via one of the established mechanisms for doing so just makes such perfect sense that I wonder why I've never seen anyone suggest it before.

+Barry Hood Barry Hood nice to speak with you. Marwyn IMO is a key character to untying the M Knot and for whatever reason, using Sarella send Lancel visions seems like a good mission for someone training. It just kills me that all the research and thought about Marwyn and I never hit on him being in bed with the Dornish. I guess his meetings in brothels with Oberyn were very very important.

Much of this theory hinges on two issues: 1) Religious fanatics are being given real visions instead of more commonly just jumping into their faith feet first and 2) George R.R. Martin knowing how long it takes to make those sugar confections. George has gone on record a few times not taking facts like that into account when he wrote the books. He didn't realize until well after the series started that a 700 foot wall is almost twice as tall as the Great Pyramind of Giza. I'm willing to assume he's not a master cook and doesn't know how long a dessert takes to prepare. This theory also requires a concerted effort to maim or weaken several Kingsguard for a yet unknown purpose. Cersei benefited from Robert Strong being available, but that was a direct result of Tyrion's trial by combat which nobody saw coming. The allegations of Qyburn being part of the Faith or interested in it ignores that he might simply have intimate knowledge of the Faith because he's getting good intel on them. Preston said it himself he's getting a lot from somebody on the inside. Preston's theories and leaps of logic often hinge on "this is a possibility" in one video becoming "we know for a fact that..." in the next.

Preston framing is some what flawed as it presents plots as having been fully planned out from day one, the idea that doran has planned for everything from the get go is a ludicrous idea, much like a chess master winning without looking at the board is a ridiculous proposition, however doran using any opportunity to have agents in high places makes sense, and doran taking advantage of later events with a larger scheme in mind is far more reasonable.

I really really hope that at least some of these theories turn out to be true. Why? Because that would mean the world GRRM has created is much deeper than you would assume on the first read, and it would explain why it takes him so long to write it. Sure, it would be easy if he wrote everything from just one point of view, and just had to decide what that character does, and how other characters react to those decisions. But if every character that is mentioned is thought out and makes its own decisions, then balancing the plot of such a book is really superhero work. And I have no doubt that GRRM is nothing less than a literary god! Looking forward to the next videos.

Plus the awesome, meaningless power of coincidence. 8:20 So while all visions in our world are the result of psychological issues, but those in ASOIAF are always someone using magic on the victim? Does that really make sense? Plus, George R.R.Martin is a good storyteller but even the best make a mistake now and then, or rely too much on coincidence. You really have some interesting ideas, and an attention to detail admirable as well as meticulous. But methinks you also "23 Enigma" your way into reading all kinds of things that aren't really there. But bravo for thinking outside the box!

It was an institution that wasn't important for hundreds of years, it's weird that anyone pays it mind at all. His visions seem too specific, as if telling him exactly what to do. And they happen every night as well. If it was the same vision every night you could put it to psychological problems perhaps, but he is suggesting that he is getting a different thing every night.
@DavidMacDowellBlue
@DavidMacDowellBlue 8 жыл бұрын
Exactly where do you get this idea the Faith "wasn't important for hundreds of years"? This seems like a total assertion to me, backed up by not a shred of evidence. In fact Jaehaerys I felt the need to negotiate a compact with the Faith, rather than simply dictate terms to them. We also know Faith officials were often close advisers to the King. The High Septon was a position of great power, so much so Cercei went out of her way to choose her own candidate for the post (and made one of many huge blunders). Not least the High Septon crowned each King. Plus consider how much extra power the Faith wielded during the reign of Baelor the Blessed. So exactly where is any evidence at all the Faith "was an institution that wasn't important for hundreds of years, its weird that anyone pays it any mind at all." In fact the fact others do pay it mind is evidence of exactly the opposite. Recall also we do not have a truly detailed history of Westeros. However, it is clearly (and Martin has said explicitly) based on our own European Medieval society, with the Faith a clear (and openly acknowledged) parallel to the Roman Catholic Church. Unimportant? With lots of members of the royal family and other nobles as high-ranking members of it? Really?

David MacDowell Blue I'm sorry if i in any way agitated you, but i would ask you to be just a little bit more polite. I suppose i should have been a little more specific, i meant around 200 years. Of course there are some rare exceptions during that time (Baelor), but it is him that granted that power to the faith anyway, if i remember right. Cercei did push for her candidate, but it never struck me as something of too much importance for her, only an extra. That crowning is only a ceremony. I don't recall a situation where it impacted much. It does seem constructed as the Roman catholic church, but it doesn't seem to have nowhere near the power it had. He doesn't really have to copy everything from his inspiration. I also have to notice you haven't said anything about Lancel, should i suppose you conceded that?
@DavidMacDowellBlue
@DavidMacDowellBlue 8 жыл бұрын
Sorry about my tone. My bursitis is acting up. But you have offered zero evidence that the Faith lacked power, while I have offered evidence it did. To be sure, that power would wax and wane as it would with any institution. Also, the authority to physically crown the king in a medieval setting is anything but "just" ceremonial. Preston Jacobs seems like a cool guy, and he certainly offers lots of cool insights. But he also projects modern sensibilities a lot of the time onto medieval societies and characters where, I would argue, they do not belong. For example--Westerosi justice is entirely based around the Faith, with its assumption the Gods will not allow an innocent man''s champion to suffer defeat. I would also point out the Faith is very wealthy, which pretty much equals power automatically. Don't see any evidence for powerlessness or un-importance. Again, this is coming across as bitchy. Sorry. My shoulder is killing me and it whittles away at my manners a bit. Again, I apologize.

Love your videos. Was thinking on your theory about dany and ashara dayne and such. But i came across this and It sounds just too right to be wrong. Was wondering if you might offer your opinions. [-]Roekaiben 3 points 1 year ago Dany grew up in a "tall stone house with a red door" but the door wasn't always red, just the last time she saw it. Ned describes the door being "sprayed" with blood during the battle of joy. Obviously there would be blood on the floor too. Dany describes leaving "bloody footprints" as she left the house with the "painted" red door. She was barefoot. Ned describes finding rheagars children (grrm wants you to think Ned is describing the dead ones but he's not) : "the girl was barefoot, still in her nightgown, and the boy...the boy...." The girl was Dany and the boy left him speechless cause it looked just like him a horse face stark. The broken promise to Lyanna is that he only adopted John and not Dany. He couldn't take her cause she looked like a targ. This would also explain why Ned was livid with Robert for trying to kill Dany. Then when Ned and howland reed are supposed to be the only two people alive, Ned says "they" took his hand from Lyanna. The they is reed and Dany. Later when thinking on rheagars murdered kids Ned says he "could not allow that to happen again...he must find a way to save the children, somehow." Children. Plural. Lemon trees grow in dorn. Tower of joy in dorne.

I'm loving this series of videos, thanks! You mention that Quentyn wasn't given the book about dragons for a reason. I would say it's most likely not complicated, books are precious and fragile and books about Dragons are all old and very rare. I would bet that the Maester Kedry had studied dragons before they left, but knowing that Quentyn's journey would be difficult and involve sea travel, I doubt they would send a precious book away just to be a reference guide.

Isn't it possible that Qyburn could have put someone elses head on the the mountain's body? Given that Qyburn was around the other targets of Dornish revenge I would say that cleaning the skull was him making a trophy of it for Dorin.

Certainly possible. We have no idea how complicated or advanced the "treatment" Qyburn is giving to the Mountain. Maybe he brought the Mountain back from the dead or maybe its as simple as some blood transfusions. We don't know.

I believe what Qyburn has learned from the Faith is how to use brainwashing and torture to produce absolute obedience. Look at the absolute destruction of Loras during his conversion and then imagine what sins the mountain would have to face and atone for. So, I think he still has his head, though could be burnt innit?

The only two problems that I have with this is first Oberyn needs to die in King's Landing to allow the creation of Ser Robert Strong. Right away there is a huge flaw, why have your brother die to avenge your sister, especially since it will cause most people in Dorne to want to go to war. Another big problem that I have with this theory is that Arianne would be queen, um shouldn't Doran be king first? Also while I'm on the subject what about marriages for Arianne, Quentin and Trystane? Trystane can marry Myrcella yes but Arianne and Quentin no clue, maybe Willas Tyrell and one of the Yronwood twins?

He didn't plant Tyrion's trial though. He may have genuinely thought the opportunity was a win-win situation as he had lived a full life and if he died, his brother would ensure he went down in history as one of the greats? Or he assumed they would yield before he is completely dead? It could be why he was going slowly in the battle, stalling for so it is easier to knock him unconscious than actually kill him. Also they had the kingsguard in Dorne has a backup mind slave as he fell for Arriane.
