Steve, I have a feeling that you may have viewed some of my DVDs. Seeing how I am the inventor of the "porthole" feature ring, the "sunrise" feature ring, and the "floating base" technique, it would have been nice to have been mentioned in your video. Nice job on your presentation.

+Malcolm Tibbetts Malcolm - I apologize for not responding before now. I just realized that you had commented. In the comments for my video where I make the two feature rings I wrote: "The main ring is a porthole ring with applied inlaid figures. The secondary feature ring at the top is a sunrise ring. My inspiration for both came from books and articles written by Malcomb Tibbetts a segmented turner in South Lake Tahoe, CA. I thank Malcomb for the inspiration. " In my intro to the feature ring video I mention that you were the inspiration for the feature rings in this vessel. I try to give credit were credit is due. If I make another vessel with these rings I'll show a picture of your book that I used as a reference. I've learned a lot from your book and I thank you for the inspiration. Best regards, Steve

Steve you're a genius! Segmented turnings have been mind boggling for me. But seeing your diagram of the segments cleared up 98% of it. So sketch out your design, then overlay the building blocks correct? And also, do you figure your block lengths by taking the radius of the project at each segment layer then use some math to calculate the circumference then divide that by 12 or hownever any segments in that ring?? Thank you! Jeff
@slindsley1951 Жыл бұрын
Jeff - Thanks for your comments. The circumference of a circle is calculated as the diameter x Pi (3.1416). The circumference is divided by the number of segments in the ring to determine the segment length. I usually sketch out my projects by hand and draw in the rings. There are programs available that will do all the calculations but I prefer to do it all old school. Take care, Steve

Great bowl! I really am impressed with the skill shown. I don't suppose you would be willing to share the sled rig you use to cut the segments. I have not seen one like it before. David Dangar
@slindsley19519 жыл бұрын
David Dangar David - Thanks for the comment. I copied my sled from one I saw built on KZbin. The channel name is thesegmenter. His channel is located at kzbin.info/door/68rfxxydoJ09eJ092tM7kw. I usually have a problem pasting links into my comments so you might need to copy and past the address into your browser. I modified the adjustable fence slightly from what he shows. I routed an arc that the pivot side of the adjustable fence moves in. If you still have questions I'd be happy to answer them for you. Thanks again for watching and for the comment. Take care, Steve

Thanks for the info. Will look up tonight. I am starting to work on segmented bowls as a way to use up all my scrap lumber.

David Dangar Segmented turnings are a great way to use up scrap lumber. If you have any questions on the sled please don't hesitate to ask. Good luck on your project. Steve

hey steve, a very nice piece of work and you have some of the greatest tips on you tube! they save me a lot of trouble. i was wondering if you tell me what is the name of the computer program you use for segmenting in some of the other video's please. thanks beau
@slindsley19518 жыл бұрын
Beau - thank you very much for your comments. I record my video on my iPhone using the Filmic Pro app. I edit my video on a Mac using iMovie. I don't use a program for the design of my projects. Hope this helps. Steve

I am very interested in your scroll saw. It seems to utilize more of the blade than most other. what is the name and model ? Thanks Terry Brown
@slindsley19519 жыл бұрын
Bonnie Brown Terry - my scroll saw is a 20 year old Delta Model 40-540. I bought it new in 1995. I don't use it all that often but when I need to it comes in very handy. Thanks for the question and for watching my video. Take care, Steve

Steve, What species do you mostly use for you segmented turnings? Also, Are you gluing each ring to a piece of plywood just to run it thru the sander?
@slindsley19516 жыл бұрын
Skip - My favorite wood of late is mesquite. It's a very hard wood but it turns well. What I like is that it holds it color even when exposed to sunlight. Woods like bubinga, bloodwood, purple heart, etc. turn well but the color fades after a year or so. I'm currently using Jatoba on a segmented project which seems to turn well. I made this project before I started using the wedgie sled to cut my segments. On this project I glued the half rings to a piece of plywood then ran it through the table saw to true up the joint. I explain the process further in one of my earlier videos. Using the wedgie sled eliminated this step and reduced the time necessary to make a project. I have a video on the wedgie sled as well. Thanks for the questions and for watching my video! Take care, Steve

Why do you use the half ring glue up instead of gluing the whole ring at once?
@slindsley19518 жыл бұрын
Richard - the sled I used for cutting these rings didn't give me the true angle. Therefore, the rings wouldn't go together without help. I like to use the half ring method when that happens. I've since switched to using a wedgie sled which solved this problem. I can go straight from the saw to glue up with this sled. I have a video on using a wedgie sled on my channel. Take care, Steve
