A point well made when you told me the other day about dreadnoughts being great for strumming , the D41 is in a class of its own.

Back in the '90s I played in a country/folk acoustic band and it was perfect for that.

This is a very accurate assessment of various guitar tones when strummed/flatpicked, in a RL ambience. In fact, I'm certain I've not heard better on Y/Tube where recordings always seem adulterated to produce a studio quality sound, often different to how a player hears them when they get home. I have owned some of these guitars over a long time playing (incl the 41) and yes, this is exactly how they sound. Meaning, they may not be for everyone, or every style, or even where you are in your guitar life. Surprised how some of them sounded tonally superior further up the fretboard, where they really came alive. I don't usually go for cut-aways, but I was impressed by the Orangewood, especially for the flatpick/strumming. Thanks for doing this, very useful for people checking out before they buy.

I record with 3 microphones placed in a stereo field and then pan them so they sound as close as I can get them to how they would sound if you were 5 feet in front of them. No effects. The Orangewood is really handy for recording a strummed guitar in a full band mix because it's already EQed (bright tone) to fit in there.

Watched the video several times and especially compared the tonality of the Martins versus the Orangewood Mason. Thumbs up for the Mason in the strumming and flatpick challenge.

I can't remember who I've told what, but the Orangewood is now my go to if I want an acoustic guitar playing in the background of a mix. It's already boosted in the highs and mids, and cutoff below 200 Hz. You're going to do that anyhow with EQ on any other guitar.

its not fair... its like saying which is your favorite child... they all sound so good in there special way!

They all have their purpose! It's like playing golf, you don't play a whole round with one club.

My first 6 string was a Yamaha classical. I traded my 1970 Precision bass for it. Yes I am still kicking myself for that one. But I had a Guild bass available to me so……. Anyway, great seeing you again. Have you bought your new classical yet?

Still thinking about it. I bought a Gretsch short scale bass that I haven't got around to recording with yet. My wife works at a thrift store and is always bringing guitars home for me to appraise. The other day she brought home a trashed Squire Strat that I gave 25 bucks for put new electronics in. Sounds pretty good.

Oh yeah. The D-41 didn’t really make the cut on Wondering Aloud. Maybe the Collings took it in the Tull category. Thanks for the comparison.

Doesn't work for that stuff. Ian knew that and that's why he plays ridiculously small guitars these days.

The guitar he uses these days is way smaller than a parlor. loudwire.com/jethro-tull-ian-anderson-calls-artists-use-roadies-tune-guitars-wimps/

I've got a 70 D-28 that Wondering Aloud sounds pretty good on. Though it sounds much better now than when I got it around 1995. But I also have a 64 0-16NY that of course sounds "just right" :) .

Hi Matt in Santa Cruz. What a beautiful D-41!! They all are sounding good with their subtle differences. I'm also really very impressed with the Orangewood Mason at $450.00!!! Looking at it now on their site. The one I'm looking at is a "Mason live" cutaway grand auditorium shape with a spruce top, layered rosewood sides and back and Fishman pickup, volume control, tuner. I did not notice if yours had a pickup with the gadgets? Keep up the good work Doc. Thanks

I have the Mason live. I'd love to play one of their solid body guitars. The pickup in the Mason is not great. The Aura system in my Martin OMC sounds much better. I took the Mason over to my friend's music store to put it on the PLEK. Not perfect, but pretty good for the money. The finish work on it is top notch. Does not look cheap. The Mason is way better than the parlor, Florence. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGiznHV7gKuHf5Isi=1kEH8HlbIStjCmMx
