Күн бұрын

I'm asked to recover long lost pieces of family history from a three generation home and it turned out to be a very special day! Coins, relics, toys and jewelry; what a great hunt! It was an absolute blast metal detecting and Finding America using my new Minelab Equinox 900 and the Coiltek 10X5 coil.

Wonderful! Great finds. It warms my heart to give relics to the owners. I have a current permission that dates back to the mid 1800's and have been able to give some relics to the original owners even though they haven't owned it for a while.

On this video (What a Weekend of Metal Detecting! Being in the Right Place at the Right Time Results in Great Finds) from four months ago, I asked the same thing… though, it was more specifically about coins. I can’t seem to copy/paste his response here, but check for my comment there and see his reply. Sorry, but it wouldn’t let me post the direct link. Just scroll through his videos and look for that title.

Not sure if I will be able to do a video like that. Putting out my regular episode each week is unbelievably demanding for me now. Really glad you enjoy my videos William and here is a written overview on how I clean my items for the videos. Hope it helps you. Apple cider vinegar is excellent for many brass and copper relics and for rusty pieces as well. I use it on pieces that do not have much historical value or pieces that don't have an original patina that I want to keep. Brooches, metal dog tags, some buttons, etc all respond well. I use the vinegar straight and just submerge the pieces in it. I pull them out at short intervals to check their progress. It's really amazing how quickly many of the things respond to the vinegar. Many brooches just take a few minutes! After I have it where I want it following the apple cider vinegar, I can then clean them lightly with a piece of #0000 steel wool that is wet and soaked with dish liquid soap if needed. I never use apple cider vinegar with coins. I usually only dry toothpick or use the Andre Pencils or English Composite Cleaning pencils on most old military buttons. Leaving the dirt in the crevices of the old buttons helps to make the button's high relief designs pop and display better. Most military buttons are dry clean only! I often clean the iron backed overall and denim buttons with a piece of wet #0000 steel wool soaked with dish liquid soap. Often, I will soak them for a little while in apple cider vinegar as well and then go over them with the steel wool. If an IHP or early wheat is not crusty. I will just dry clean them to try and preserve the patina using the Composite Cleaning Pencils from England and the Andre pencil set. I use the hard pencil to gently scrape any dirt from it. I then use the steel wool pencil and slowly remove the dirt and grime. I clean it with a dry, soft towel in between cleanings to see my progress. Once I have the coin where I want it, I will then use a tiny bit of paraffin wax and rub it into the coin which will give it a great luster. I do have a certain way of cleaning the IHP's and some early wheaties. Here is what I do for them when they have a stubborn coating on them. I use a small glass bowl and fill it with hydrogen peroxide. I then put it in the microwave until it is boiling. (40 seconds or so) Then I take the IHP and put it in. Whichever side you want to work on should be the side that is facing up. Give it about 10 seconds at a time and then remove it. Never leave them in it too long. I use a small fork and just push it up the side of the bowl until I can get my fingers on it. Be careful, the coin is going to be hot for a few seconds. I then rub it vigorously with my thumb or a cloth and a lot of times that is usually sufficient. If it has a lot of crust, I use the Andre Pencil set to scrape at the crust gently. You may have to repeat this a few times until you have it where you want it. Get the peroxide boiling each time. I do about 10 seconds each time. I also use the steel wool pencil that comes with the Andre Pencil Set a lot to get them perfect. Once I have the penny where I want it, I take a bit of paraffin wax and rub it into the coin to give it a deep luster. (Here's the disclaimer LOL) With all that said, do not clean any coin that has substantial numismatic value. For nickels and aluminum tokens, (this is only for ones that have no numismatic or collector value) that you just want to look nice and display well you can use wet 0000 steel wool and some dish liquid soap on them. If a piece has any historical or monetary value or possesses a nice patina, keep the cleaning to a bare minimum. If it's a piece like an old brooch or a similar item that doesn't have any desirable original patina or historical value and you just want it to display nicely then feel free to clean it. Hope that helps some. ATB Greg

The train cars are a model of an early locomotive with a vertical boiler and the other car is its tender. Could be a souvenir from the centennial of American RR's c1927-28, or much later (something like the Franklin Mint). Might be a copy of the Best Friend of Charleston. Given how badly it is corroded, it is probably a zinc casting rather than pewter.

I have been using the Nox for many years now and the reason I am leaving it in Park 1 on the 900 is to show people how incredibly well it performs in the most basic of programs and with the factory settings while searching many of my previously hunted ground. Unless you are just a coin shooter, I would strongly recommend that you pursue signals below 50 as you are leaving a lot of great finds in the ground if you notch them out and never dig them. Hi Greg , another well put together episode with some good finds the confirmation medal is very nice and i love that little rail road car toy , and with a name like Campbell i would imagine they are the descendants from a family that originally came from over here ( Scotland ) possibly during the forced migration in the 1800s maybe ? , anyway nice one mate ATB Rob .

Thanks Rob and I also loved those two finds as well. I have no doubt about that. The Appalachian mountains were originally heavily settled by Scots-Irish and they had a strong influence on the area beginnig in the late 1700's. Remnants of the dialect and old language are still used and heard here. Very glad that you enjoyed watching this one! Take care and ATB Greg

I bet at least 80% of the Wheaties I find are 44's

We definitely find a lot of them. That was the highest mintage number of the wheats by far with the Philadelphia mint churning out 1.43 billion pennies in 1944.
