As a film nerd film school person who used to love going to the theater but not really as much anymore. Might be a hot take, but most movies don't need the theater experience anymore. Everyone only thinks it does because most of us are from the generations that grew up where the theater was the only way to see a movie and home theater systems either didn't exist, were too expensive, or were still shitty. Once you take off the nostalgia/rose colored glasses. The majority of movies do not benefit from being seen in the theater and you can get the exact same experience at home with a good tv and a decent sound bar. And with streaming you don't have to wait as long for a movie to come to home release. For the distance you are away from the tv, your couch is an equivalent distance to the tv as your theater seat is to the screen. A decent sound bar will fill up the room "enough". By and large the experience you can have at home is mostly the same and at worst, close enough. While also not having to deal with the down sides of a theater like dumb kids, loud talkers, people using their phone during the movie, and horribly over priced unhealthy snacks. The only movies that really NEED the big screen are like big blockbuster event movies and MAYBE a comedy if it's really good/special to get that crowd laughter effect. And most low budget or mid budget indie movies do better as a show where you get longer character arcs like on a streaming series anyway. But film geeks aren't ready for this conversation lol. Everything Everywhere All at Once is one of those exceptions though for sure. That movie was explicitly better in the theater.
