Tyler Childers and Sturgill Simpson are two off the top of my head that are easily in Isbells league

They are both good, but not anywhere near Isbell, every song on Nashville Sound is amazing, Outfit alone puts him on a Springsteen, Dylan, Guthrie, Cohen level in my opinion.

Beg to differ -- it's not sad and dark. About being vampires, he says, "I wouldn't feel the need to hold your hand." Knowing it won't last forever is what makes it matter, makes you literally hold on to it. That's beautiful.
@Real_McPhee
@Real_McPhee 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! What makes beautiful is the truth behind each word. Once we come to grips with our switch getting flipped to the off position getting closer every single day, it makes you appreciate them even more. It doesn’t have to be a spouse to spend you days with, it could be your children or family, we should all work hard til the end of our shift!

It can be both things at once. It’s beautiful because the impermanence of it all makes us hold the people we love tight. It’s sad because one day we will have to grieve them, or if we are lucky, forget them in death while they grieve us

I was 38 years old, married for a decade, when this song changed my perspective. “Maybe time running out is a gift” Man, took me a bit to wrap my head around the concept. That simple idea makes you realize every second spent with loved ones is more valuable than you can imagine. Recognizing perhaps you’ve seen more sunsets in your past than you will see in your future makes each one a little more beautiful.

Violin and fiddle are generally the same instrument. The main difference is playing style, but both are tuned the same (so you can play songs in major or minor keys with both). Fiddles are sometimes strung with steel strings instead of synthetic to get a more piercing sound, and sometimes the bridge is flatter so that it's easier to play multiple strings at once. But a fiddle player could generally pick up a violin and play it just as they would a fiddle, and vice versa.

Every marriage begins in joy, ends in pain (divorce or death)- the rare exceptions are simultaneous death in some accident or trauma. I lost my beloved wife a bit over 4 years ago. we were together 34 years. I now carry on alone until it's my time to join her. Jason Isbell brings this reality home in a soul-searing song. I weep every time I play this song. I guess I'd call it "catharsis".

"if we were vampires then we could always be forever together". As I've went down the Jason Isbell rabbit hole, I think that's not quite the point of this song. He's illustrating that "time running out is a gift" because if we were vampires then we wouldn't feel the need to hold hands or love someone because we've got the rest of time to be together. Given that our time together is finite, we should make the best of what we have left.

If he does it for 40 more years he can be considered along side Dylan. I’d say purely on a poetry level he is close to Dylan, but can he succeed in 10 different genres of music?

The old joke is that a violin has strings but a fiddle has strangs. But there's nothing about the key that the song is played in or positioning that differentiates a violin from a fiddle, it's just a regional/dialect difference with the term fiddle being associated with Country/Bluegrass/Americana and violin being preferred in other genres of music.
