Yeah I shipped Pearl and Rose for the majority of the series but it's easy to see that Rose didn't care for Pearl in the same way Pearl cared for Rose. And that left many sore spots that have been patched up slowly throughout the series. If Pearl ends up romantically involved with Bismuth this could serve as the final step for getting over Rose. You don't need to have a romantic connection to bond and grow like that. This entire show is a testament to that! Bistmuth and Pearl have known and grown close over thousands of years, also have shared trauma, but also have shared probably thousands of moments of deep connection, love, and trust. I find it very cute and interesting that out of all the gems Peridot, who we first met as a cold, indimidating homeworld gem, is Steven's first ally with his mental issues. It shows a lot of character growth for her, especially with the mature way she handled the reality Steven is living through. If anyone were to first know about it I thought it would be someone like Amethyst initially (because of the leak from a while ago and this episode that's obviously not true), but Peridot would be one of the last characters I would've guessed, but in a way it also makes perfect sense for Peridot. She's gone through a lot when it comes to trusting others (Steven and The CGs mainly), and is now a more open and happy person. So when steven, one of her best friends, needs her support...of course she'll be there.

Everyone says Connie will fix all Steven’s issues, but I think that, while she is a crucial part for his healing, she won’t be enough, because she’s “a part”. This isn’t about “Just Connie”. This is about “Everyone Steven helped in his life are now content with their life and moving on without checking how he is doing, until something REALLY BAD happens to him” (not helped by Steven being conditioned to hide his issues from everyone). The point being, that to fully heal him, they need to give him ALL KIND of Love (Romantic, Platonic, Familiar, you get the idea) and support.

What's scary to think about is that what Steven is going through is similar in some ways to what homecoming service members go through. When deployed, service members always have a mission to accomplish and a target group to protect. They're usually always busy. Once they come home, that busyness is lost, and they can have a lot of trouble adjusting. It's called reentry, and while the military does train for it today, the simple fact is that nothing can adequately prepare service members for reentry, because each individual experience is different. I can't speak from experience, but I can point to the little-known spinoff of the popular TV dramedy MASH as a prime example in fiction. AfterMASH follows Colonel Potter, Father Mulcahy and Max Klinger as they adjust to civilian life. All three of them feel restless and unneeded, and it causes them all to become directionless, depressed and even a bit rebellious. Mulcahy falls into alcoholism over the loss of his hearing. Klinger falls back into his old habits out of desperation to support his wife after they're both rejected (at least temporarily) by their families. Potter struggles with the hard decision to leave his hometown of Hannibal, where he's lived all his life and has only just finished paying the mortgage on his house, and take a chance on a lucrative position at a VA hospital in St. Louis. Of the three of them, Potter has the easiest time adjusting because he's been through reentry twice before, but this is the first time he's truly been a civilian. He adjusts by finding others who, like himself, have only known the military and war their entire adult lives, and then by finding those not dealing well with reentry and guiding them through it. He finds Mulcahy and Klinger and offers both positions at the VA hospital. And the three of them become close friends as they support one another. They come to be one another's saviors in civilian life. Since the series got cancelled after just one season, and to this day the last episode isn't even available on the internet, not many people know about it. It's lower quality, with storylines that will never compare to MASH, but like the original series, the writers did work very hard to show very real responses to leaving the military and becoming a civilian again. And just as with MASH, it's sometimes painful to watch the characters we love hurt that much. I know my heart practically broke for Mulcahy (my favorite character). Now, remember this frightening fact: Steven is, in essence, a child soldier. He trained for and was at least partially involved in his mother's war from the age of 12. He defeated his family's enemy at age 14. From 14 to 16, he was basically commanding an army of his own. And now he FINALLY gets to be a kid. It's hard enough for adult veterans to adjust to civilian life after leaving an active military career. And they at least can call it retirement and reap the fruits of their labor. Steven's life is only just beginning. And his life thus far has been largely defined by war. A 14-year-old shouldn't be a general. A 16-year-old shouldn't be a veteran. Is it any wonder Steven is feeling so directionless? To me, it's amazing that they're showing this period of adjustment for Steven, because not even Avatar: The Last Airbender has yet dared to do that with its characters. Even in the comics, the entire Gaang is still caught up in trying to rebuild the world after the war. They have not yet had the chance to lament their lost childhood. Aang is 14 and has to behave like he's 24. It makes me wonder if the comics will ever bring the characters to that point where everything is done and they don't know what to do next. Aang in particular. His personality is very similar to Steven's, and he has a very similar position, so he's liable to react in a very similar manner to Steven. I want to see that explored.
