There is a misconception on the fusion. This isn't a fusion between garnet and amethyst. It's a fusion of sapphire, ruby, and amethyst. Sapphire is generally passive. She doesn't generally interfere with amethyst, pearl, and Steven when they're dealing with their own stuff. Especially if she doesn't see a future where they might seriously injure themselves. Ruby and amethyst are generally aggressive and these overpower sapphire's reason.

She's my favorite Crystal Gem. I think she's the perfect example for explaining the concept that fusions have their own consciousness. Garnet and Amethyst clearly regretted fusing at the end of Coach Steven, meaning that Sugilite herself was keeping everyone together. The track Sugilite's Return opens with an instrument that neither Amethyst or Garnet have on their pallets. That was her own instrument, just like how she was becoming her own Gem.

Dude Sugilite was always my favorite gem because of how strong and chaotic she is. She absolutely does fall into her own feelings- she’s wants to be strong so she punches something, she wants to be entertained so she starts some drama, she wants to make Steven smile so she talks to him (you like that lil man?) and tries to have genuine playfulness with him (see snow day). She definitely embodies every negative thing that could come from being too into your emotions, hurting others in every way as you get wrapped up in yourself. Her debut definitely shows that off. But I honestly think now that garnet and amethyst have matured she can definitely show off the happy and playful side of falling into your own feelings. Just look at how she was vibing in snow day! Hell, she was the first big fusion to show up- probably because Garnet and amethyst were having tons of fun with the tag! They got caught up in the fun (despite Steven not wanting to) and probably came together with a huge grin and a “oh I have the *best* idea” mentality. She was able to unfuse very quickly too, showing that despite being wrapped up in the emotion of fun she wasn’t gonna keep it to herself (both literally as a fusion, and metaphorically as garnet and pearl get the idea to fuse and create more playfulness with Steven) Sugilite just embodies the high emotions of a relationship to me and how you enable traits in some else. Whether it’s you and your best friend with a terrible idea and no chance of being each other’s impulse control, or two friends doing something dumb to laugh together, the intense impulse is wanting to be with someone and just embody whatever high emotions y’all have together in that moment.

I kind of dislike the use of “unstable” when referring to Sugilite because the show refers to stable fusions as ones that can exist for longer periods of time. She definitely would be seen as having an unhealthy mindset because of some amplified abrasive traits, but her ability to exist well suggests a cohesive balance amongst her parts.

I think that Amethyst and Pearl have such a hard time fusing, that when they do they have to be so insync that they only bring the positive out of eachother, making Opal a non toxic, stable fusion. Sardonyx and Sugilite are both toxic, in different ways, because the fused gems get along better. Garnet and Pearl are both responsible, helping them get along, but their responsabilities often come first, hurting others. Because of this, Sardonyx doesn't notice the sufferring of Smokey Quartz until WAY too late. Garnet and Amethyst both know how to have fun, and are both defiant by nature. That make Sugilite antagonized by authority and very volitile when suggested she should defuse.

I also wanna add that the connection between how well gems get along and the toxicity of the fusion is a scale in my opinion. Malachite is toxic because Jasper is hated by Lapis, so the fusion is a fight between that. If they get along, but barely, the fusion will be non toxic (or less toxic) but alsp not stable. Opal and Bluebird Azurite are good examples. They only fuse when they have a perfect sync and a common target, but they don't really get along. Then, those who get along well can be toxic because of what I said (they have many common traits [not necessarily good traits] and when they can stay fused without a common target they have a chance to bring the bad out of eachother). The last part is gems who are perfectly insync. Those are gems like Sapphire and Ruby, the gems that form Rhodonite etc.. Those gems bring the best out of eachother and can seperate at any time, but being fused makes them feel better, be better and feel closer/whole.

My favorite thing about Sugilite is how we get to see more of Ruby in this fusion. Often whenever garnet fuzes, we mainly see sapphire’s traits manifest. Sugikite is one of the few fusions where ruby takes more of the reins from garnet’s side. Fusion is very complicated, deep, snd can be messy. Some fusions don’t make sense. But sugilite has a lot of understandable ties.

I think there should be a fusion featuring Bismuth. This gem would be the silent, stoic badass type and would be somewhat animalistic in appearance. The name of this fusion would be Hematite. The reasons behind her personality and appearance are due to the fact that hematite's metaphysical properties include stress relief and a feeling of inner balance. Her somewhat animalistic appearance would be due to the fact that hematite is commonly carved into animal shapes and worn as pendants in necklaces.

One of the reasons for her being “unstable” could be the fact she’s three gems, and we can see that fusions of multiple gems have a hard time keeping stuff together. Not just maintaining the fusion like with alexandrite but staying as a united front. Opal maybe was more zen as for only being two gems but adding more people and personality into the mix changes things. Sardonix wasn’t destructive but we see her have this emotional instability when she starts to get upset with herself. Sugilite is the result of an inbalance of the personalities she’s comprised of making her highlight their more negative qualities. Sapphire is more distant and cold which can point toward Sugilite’s disregard for other’s safety. Amethyst is known to really hate being treated as lesser, so when Sugilite is being called dangerous and unstable this insecurity shows in the form of aggression. Ruby is impulsive and loud, another factor for Sugilite just smashing everything.

There was a big issue made when the Sugilite ep was aired that apparently Nicki hated the portrayal of Sugilite. This is all rumours and I never looked much into it to see if it was true but it could be a possible explanation as to why Sugilite will only get a silent role. Tbh I don't think the rumours are true. Most voice work, especially with CN, usually give concepts and images for the voice actors to work with so I don't believe she was kept in the dark about Sugilite's appearance/portrayal

I think Ruby and Sapphire have a pretty healthy relationship in all honesty. Despite them fighting occassionally and separating they always find a way to work out. In Keystone motel they both fought about Pearl using them. In the end they worked it out and admitted that they didn't handle the situation correctly. Sapphire admitted to ignoring it and waiting for it to pass. Ruby admitted she held onto that anger and apologized. I think they are a healthy relationship. They show love and understanding, as well as the fact that sometimes couples fight and you have to talk to work things out. They respect and love eachother, Ruby and Sapphire accept eachother despite their flaws and bring out the best in eachother when they fuse as Garnet or otherwise. Their relationship is very wholesome. Garnet also tells Stevonnie when Steven and connie first fuse, that they are an experience and they should make sure it's a good experience.

You asked about Garnet being a healthier fusion/relationship and I think she started as sort of unhealthy. Ruby and Sapphire were codependent which can be an unhealthy way to approach a relationship. We kind of saw this when they were separated in Jail Break and Ruby didn’t care about anything except finding Sapphire. Even though she knew Steven and cared about him, in that moment, he was just there. Ruby and Sapphire grew as individuals while growing together as Garnet. She went from a relationship of questionable health and became a healthier fusion/relationship.

To be fair they were in jail and Ruby was probably scared to death about finding out they cracked or shattered Sapphire. If your wife (yeah, they weren't married then but have been living as a married couple for thousands of years) is possibly dead, you would only concentrate about finding out if she is okay. I don't think that was unhealthy, just Ruby being on a crisis and scared like any person would. Plus she didn't even want Steven to meet her like that.

Another thing to consider for Amethyst is that in the episode "Cry for help" When it's revealed that Pearl was rebuilding the communication hub over and over Amethyst kind of defends pearl and says that the two of them have to use Garnet to make themselves feel strong, cause they both view Garnet as this perfect powerhouse. So it makes sense that when Amethyst fuses with Garnet the most powerful crystal gem and finally feels super powerful and actually worthful that she wouldn't want to let that go because it would mean in her eyes going back to a weak defective gem.

When there’s a white character the fusion is elegant and graceful. When it’s the 2 black characters it forms a demonic hell spawn monster. 2.Nicki Minaj might have not seen Sugilite until we did.

The difference between opal and sugilite’s stability simple. It’s having little common ground versus having bad common ground. Amethyst and Pearl clash openly, not sharing much between them. They simply don’t have enough in common to create a new persona. Sugilite is as you explained, embodying the negative interplay between ruby’s aggression, sapphire’s detachment and amethyst’s impulsiveness. They fit together, opal just doesn’t.

Personally, I’ve always been low key upset that Suglite was seen as a monstrous villain. She’s the only fusion besides Garnet that’s made up of 2 characteristically black characters. And she’s rude and out of control. Plus she was easily outsmarted by Pearl.. there’s just a lot that can be implied. And worst off, she displays none of the positive characteristics of her parts, unlike Opal who seemed to almost exclusively display only positive traits despite her parts being at odds with each other. 100% feel you, but also - and I quote: "AAAHHH, I'M A MOTHAF*CKN MONSTER". It's in her branding, and you know Nicki ain't signing up for a character portrayal that's not on brand for her. She, literally, makin' and breaking careers out here, so CN prob ain't willin to spend the coin to keep her coming back. I feel like they needed to make her a bad idea so that they'd have an excuse to never bring her back in a substantial way? Also that fusion failing was the catalyst for Amethyst to confront her inferiority complex. Unfortunately, I don't know if we'll get to see an updated version of Sugilite now that both Amethyst and Garnet have matured and come into their own, like we got to see with Opal in various stages of Pearl and Amethyst's growth. I really hope we do, because yeah. It was really early in both character's development. I'm sure a better version of Sugilite would be presented if they brought her back in a speaking role because the tension between Amethyst and Pearl wouldn't be a thing anymore. With my opinion on garnet, I think at the beginning I would say it was very toxic because Ruby and Sapphire literally couldn't do anything without being together it even seemed like the actual universe would throw things into their fusion to litterally seperate them just for a little bit at least. It's fine to do things together, but you still need your independence or what's going to happen to you when something happens to your partner. That being said I think after the marriage garnet is on the right track to being a healthier relationship because ruby and sapphire can be together and do things together but also do things that they want to do own their own

The animosity towards Pearl is mostly for amethyst now the impulse control that’s for amethyst and Ruby since you know they’re both not as bright but they’re also very muscular and very strong and the only one that’s levelheaded is sapphire in the group but when it comes to the strong in the bulkiness of her that’s from amethyst in Ruby it’s still my favorite fusion
