The Mudeford Race through the harbour entrance can be challenging to sail through. Visit on Boxing Day and you'll see families fishing for crabs. There is lots of Georgian smuggling history in Christchurch Harbour. The Battle Of Mudeford Quay took place in 1784 and was the largest recorded gun fight between smugglers and the Revenue/Navy. The pub was used as a fortress by the smugglers. Another smuggling account tells of a casket of treasure being thrown overboard into the mud of the harbour. And another account tells of a smuggler who would swim past the customs house at Mudeford Quay at night pulling caskets of brandy behind him up to the Priory. Hengistbury Head was a smuggling central with horses and wagons hidden in the ancient dyke.
